From Daryl: Although this is typically my day to post, I've ceded it to my darling friend Sofie Ryan. She has a new book coming out, and you shouldn't miss it! For those who don't know...
Sofie Ryan is the author of the New York Times bestselling Second Chance Cat
Mystery series, featuring re-purpose store owner Sarah Grayson; Charlotte’s
Angels, a group of senior sleuths; Mr. P, the world’s oldest computer hacker;
and Elvis, a black cat with an uncanny ability to sniff out a lie.

About the Second Chance Cat Mystery series
When Sarah Grayson opened a secondhand shop
in the quaint town of North Harbor, Maine, she was expecting peace and quiet.
Then she was adopted by a rescue cat named Elvis and a kooky group of senior
sleuths known as Charlotte’s Angels.
In Telling Tails, Sarah’s friend and employee Rose is delivering a customer’s purchase when the quick errand turns deadly. Rose arrives just in time to see the customer murdered by his wife, but before she can call the police, she is knocked out cold. When she wakes up, no one believes her, especially after the woman claims her husband is very much alive and has left her for someone else—and has a text message and empty bank account to prove it. Despite the woman’s convincing story, Sarah is sure something is fishy—and she, Elvis and and the Angels are soon on the case.

From Sofie:
At this point in the holidays I’ve
overindulged in stuffing, gravy, and gingerbread cookies and I’m looking for
something that’s a little lighter and a little healthier. So I make Apple
Carrot Salad. Most of the time I have all the ingredients in the house.
Enjoy!
Apple
Carrot Salad
Ingredients:
1 large firm flesh apple
2 medium carrots
½ celery rib*
2 T. lime juice
2 T. apple cider vinegar
1T. honey
½ t. sunflower or canola oil
Whisk the lime juice, vinegar, honey, and
oil together in a small bowl.
Peel and quarter the apple. Remove the
seeds and coarsely grate. Pour half the lime juice mixture over the apples and
mix well. Peel and grate both carrots. Finely chop the celery. Add the carrots
and celery to the apple mixture with the rest of the dressing. Mix well.
Makes 4 servings. (You could eat the entire
bowl yourself for lunch. Or so I’ve heard.)
*I usually use the one or two left over
celery sticks from our Boxing Day veggie plate.
This recipe is very flexible. If you like
more apple or more carrot use more. You can even leave out the celery if you
don’t have any.

I have had several second chances at life and your series makes me think of the second chances my sweet rescue cats, Grover, Ellie, and Jasmine have received. My mom has read the first 2 books of this series and I can't wait to follow suit and, also, to post reviews. ReplyDeleteMy own favorite second chance story is probably my dad's story. He was standing in line with a group of his army buddies. My mom was in the same line with her friends. The guys were goofing off and almost knocked my mother into the busy street. They tried to make amends but the girls were having none of it. Then Dad--who it turned out had noticed Mom the moment she'd gotten in line--asked for a second chance to make a better first impression. I'm glad she gave it to him!

DeleteI was able to tweak my career right when I thought I'd lost it. That was almost 14 years ago, and I'm still working. teenlibn at hotmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI was a teacher for 35+ years, so second chances are common place, but always with a provision. However, I've been disappointed by so many of the results form 'second chances.' I am reticent to give them without 'only ifs...' I have been given second chances and I've taken them carefully...sometimes they're a trap.

ReplyDeleteLooking forward to reading this book very soon. I believe that my second chance at life was two years ago in June when after many months of serious leg ulcerations/infections and huge wounds from circulation problems in my legs and ankles, I got a life threatening bacterial infection which began shutting down my vital organs. Having had major reactions to antibiotics previously, all that the doctors had left to try was one IV antibiotic used normally for MRSA infections. Thanks to God, I was able to tolerate massive doses of this medication for quite sometime and it saved my life. I still have a few medical problems that will linger on from this near-death experience, but I am still here to live my life when almost all hope was given up for me. Praying I won't be faced with needing a third chance in the upcoming months when I have to have a very complicated throat surgery and others after that. ❤

ReplyDeleteHere our second chances go to our adopted/rescued cats. No matter what type of life they had prior to coming home to us, they are given love, spoiled, and are forever our family members. Second chances are beautiful. Also, I love this series. kchinetti at gmail dot com.
ReplyDeleteI got a second chance to spend time with my birth mother. She was forced to give me up for adoption when I was 13 months old. We found each other again TOTALLY BY ACCIDNET when I was in my late 40s. She died suddenly 18 months ago just before I had planned another trip to spend time with her (she was in FL, I'm in VA). We had about 10 years to get to know each other, and it was amazing how much alike we were--even looked exactly alike.
ReplyDeletebmwhokie@gmail.com
Second chances is a way of life here. We reuse, refurbish things. We now adopt only senior dogs and cats. And I am trying to help my neighbor find someone willing to give her son a second chance. He did drugs for a little 20 years. No stealing, violence or anything like that. Just jail time for drug possession. Always worked until he decided to go into rehab. Felt he was to old to keep doing that s***. Had excellent work ethics. Well respected and liked. But once clean? I was really appalled at how few are willing to give recovering drug users or alcoholics a second chance. Even the guy he had been working for when he decided to quit was against him then. He has been clean for almost 10 years and he is still being told "Can't use you, people like you can never be trusted." I had gone with them to Walmart to grab a couple of things and was sitting nearby when he was told that. And the thing is. There were to of their employees who were taking something right outside the door. The gal who was monitoring the cameras told the manager and he said destroy the tape and leave it alone. I get only my meds there. Or did rather. Thought it best to change. We all get a second chance everyday. When we get up in the morning we have the option to do better. Be better. Have yet to read this author and am hoping this will be a start. Della at deepotter (at) peoplepc ((dot) com
