Guest Daryl Wood Gerber #Giveaway +#Recipe for a Brookie

MAYA: Please welcome back Agatha Award-winning author Daryl Wood Gerber, a former regular on Mystery Lovers Kitchen. She's joining us today with book news, a sweet recipe, and giveaways.

DARYL:  Hi. Thank you for having me back on Mystery Lovers Kitchen. I’ve missed all of you so much! I’m excited because there’s a lot to catch up on. I have a new Cookbook Nook Mystery (#11 in series) coming out in a couple of days, SIMMERING WITH RESENTMENT. In June, I have the 3rd Fairy Garden Mystery coming out.

I think many of you have read at least one of the Cookbook Nook Mysteries, and I hope you’ll order this new one and enjoy. A killer’s explosive vengeance may lead to Jenna Hart’s happily never after . . . There are lots of tasty recipes in the book including an ice cream bombe! Watch out for an explosive story!

But today, I’d like to share a bit more about the Fairy Garden Mysteries. How many of you heard of them? They feature Courtney Kelly, the owner of Open Your Imagination, a fairy garden shop in the Cypress and Ivy Courtyard, one of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California’s many courtyards. They also feature Courtney’s sidekick Fiona, a fairy sleuth. Actually, Fiona is a righteous fairy (there are a few other types). She was kicked out of the fairy kingdom for being a bit of an imp, and now, in order to earn her adult wings and return to the kingdom and because she is a righteous fairy, she has to help humans—in particular, Courtney—solve problems.

Open Your Imagination serves tea on the weekends on the patio and often hosts a book club tea. I love drumming up recipes for the teas. Courtney doesn’t make them all. She can cook, but her friend Yvanna, who works at Sweet Treats, another shop in the courtyard, is a baker. She has dreamed up some deliciousness like lemon cupcakes with lavender icing, cinnamon swirl scones, and now brookies, a delicious brownie cookie that has won the hearts of all of Courtney’s customers. Actually, Courtney’s best friend Meaghan came up with the recipe and shared it with Yvanna, but Yvanna has tweaked it to perfection.

So I’d like to share it with you.

So I’d like to share it with you.

But first, what’s A HINT OF MISCHIEF about?

The proprietor of a fairy garden and tea shop in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Courtney Kelly has an occasional side gig as a sleuth—with a sprinkling of magical assistance. . . .

Courtney has thrown a few fairy garden parties—for kids. But if a local socialite is willing to dip into her trust fund for an old sorority sister’s fortieth birthday bash, Courtney will be there with bells on. To make the job even more appealing, a famous actress, Farrah Lawson, is flying in for the occasion, and there’s nothing like a celebrity cameo to raise a business’s profile.

Now Courtney has less than two weeks to paint a mural, hang up tinkling windchimes, plan party games, and conjure up all the details. While she works her magic, the hostess and her girlfriends head off for an indulgent spa day—which leads to a fateful facial for Farrah, followed by her mysterious death. Could the kindhearted eyebrow waxer who Farrah berated in public really be the killer, as the police suspect? Courtney thinks otherwise, and with the help of her imaginative sleuth fairy, sets out to dig up the truth behind this puzzling murder . . .

Now for the recipe!

What the heck is Chayote? + Day of Secrets #giveaway

\

From Daryl aka Avery:

Special today - DAY OF SECRETS is back in US stores for $1.99 (e-book). Just today. It's my special price to celebrate the "International BookBub" sale that is also just today all over the world (other than the US). What fun!

To celebrate with you, I'm giving away a copy of DAY OF SECRETS (paper) to one commenter who will tell someone that the book is on sale today or tell someone that the book has some great reviews or tell someone that they know I have another cozy mystery coming out in November, A DEADLY ECLAIR. Can you do that? It's share and tell day! Leave a comment below.

In the meantime, have you ever gone to the store and seen something unusual in the veggie section and thought what the heck is that and what do I do with it?

Last week I found something called a chayote. It was so "cute" that I had to have it. I purchased it and came home and searched the Internet for its properties. It was in the squash section so I figured it had to be that family.

According to Wikipedia:

Chayote (Sechium edule) is an edible plant belonging to the gourd family Cucurbitaceae, along with melons, cucumbers and squash. Globally it is known by other names including christophine, cha-cha, pipinola (in Hawaii), pear squash, or choke (in Australia and New Zealand).

SEE HOW GLOBAL I AM TODAY??

Next, I searched how to cook it. A couple of different recipes recommended slicing it thin. Some suggested peeling it, but I didn't find that necessary. If you were to grow chayote, you might have to wash your hands after picking it because it's "sticky" off the vine, but sold at the store, that stickiness is gone!

This recipe is a compilation of a lot of recipes I found, so I can't attribute it to any single one.

Take it away, Chayote!

CHAYOTE WITH SHRIMP

1 chayote
1 medium shallot
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon oregano (dried) (I used bonne herbs from Penzeys)
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
1 slice tomato cut into bits
6 shrimp
Parmesan cheese, if desired

Cut the chayote lengthwise into 1/2-inch thick slices. (Discard ends)

Cut shallot into slices.

Heat butter and oil in a skillet over medium heat until foam subsides.

Add shallots and herbs and spices; sauté over medium-low heat for 3-4 minutes. Remove shallots to a plate.

Add chayote slices; sauté 3 minutes then cover and cook for 8 minutes, until tender. (You might want to flip them at 4 minutes. I did.)

Add in the sautéed shallots plus the tomato bits and the shrimp. Cook until the shrimp is ready, about 5 minutes.

Top with Parmesan cheese, if desired.

SPRING GREEN RISOTTO recipe from author @DarylWoodGerber

From Daryl aka Avery:

I truly enjoy green vegetables. There's something about them that make me smile. I'm not a big carrot fan. I don't like beets and eggplant. I'll do yellow squash occasionally, but I'm drawn to the green things when I search the vegetable aisle. I wonder what that says about me. Can we tell who we are by what we eat?

Another food I love is risotto. It is a comfort food with a hearty goodness and it's downright sinful, as well. The luscious flavors of onions and butter, and chicken stock sooth my soul.

Whenever I make risotto, I have a bottle of wine at hand. Not to use in the risotto. To sip while cooking because risotto requires that I stand by the stove and stir...and stir...

This particular recipe I discovered in the Food Network Magazine, April 2016 edition. The picture was so enticing, and I have to admit, my pictures turned out okay, too. The addition of lemon zest is terrific. The flavor of fennel is subtle and lovely. The small scoop of mascarpone added at the end gives such a creaminess to the dish.

So enjoy! I love experimenting with recipes from magazines, and this one was a winner.

SPRING GREEN RISOTTO
From Food Network Magazine April 2016

This dish caught my eye. So full of color and yumminess.

Their recipe serves 4. I cut in half to serve 2.

1 ½ tablespoons good olive oil
1 ½ tablespoons unsalted butter
3 cups chopped leeks, white and light green parts (2 leeks)
1 cup chopped fennel (the whole bulb part)
1 ½ cups Arborio rice
2/3 cup dry white wine
4 to 5 cups simmering chicken stock (I used boxed Pacific brand)
1 pound thin asparagus
10 ounces frozen peas, defrosted
1 tablespoon freshly grated lemon zest (2 lemons)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/3 cup mascarpone cheese, preferably Italian
½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra for serving
3 tablespoons minced fresh chives, plus extra for serving

Heat olive oil and butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.  Add the leeks and fennel and sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, until tender. Add the rice and stir for a minute to coat with the vegetables, oil, and butter.  Add the white wine and simmer over low heat, stirring constantly, until most of the wine has been absorbed. Add the chicken stock, a third of a cup at a time, stirring almost constantly and waiting for the stock to be absorbed before adding more. This process takes about 25 to 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, cut the asparagus diagonally in 1 ½-inch length and discard the tough ends. Blanch the asparagus in boiling salted water for 2 minutes, until al dente. Drain and cool immediately in ice water.

When the risotto has been cooking for 15 minutes, drain the asparagus and add it to the risotto with the peas, lemon zest, 2 teaspoons salt and 1 teaspoon pepper. Continue cooking and adding stock, stirring often until the rice is tender but still firm.

Whisk the lemon juice and mascarpone together in a small bowl. When the risotto is done, turn off the heat and stir in the mascarpone mixture plus the Parmesan cheese and chives.  Set aside off the heat for a few minutes, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and serve hot with a sprinkling of chives and more Parmesan cheese.

Savor the mystery and say cheese!
