Guest Victoria Hamilton, Slow Cooker Stuffed Peppers, #recipe @vmburns #giveaway

VMBURNS: Today, I'm thrilled to have Victoria Hamilton in the kitchen. Victoria is the author of the Vintage Kitchen Mystery series, and will be sharing news about the newest book in the series, MASHER OF CEREMONIES. Welcome, Victoria!

Victoria Hamilton: Hello, readers! First, a big thank you to Valerie Burns for offering me one of her usual days on Mystery Lovers Kitchen. I appreciate it so much; I always love coming here to share a recipe. Before you get into that recipe, please don’t miss my Giveaway at the end of my post. I’m giving away an Amazon Gift Card!

In case you don’t know, Jaymie Leighton Má¹»ller, the heroine of my Vintage Kitchen Mysteries presents, at the end of each mystery book, a vintage recipe she has re-imagined in a more modern form. At the end of Masher of Ceremonies (Out May 19th from Beyond the Page Publishing!) it happens to be a German-origin comfort food, Schinkennudeln. If you want to know what that is… check out the book!

Here at Mystery Lovers Kitchen I have for you a recipe for Stuffed Peppers done in the slow cooker! These are easy, tasty, and warmly comforting, and yet don’t heat your kitchen up on the hottest summer day. A win-win in my books.

But first, may I blow your mind for just a sec? Did you know that bell peppers are a FRUIT?? Yes, indeed they are. They are actually a BERRY. Say what??

I didn’t know that until I did a little poking around to find out why bell peppers are called bell peppers. Was there a Mrs. Bell? Did they look like a bell to someone? And then I got totally distracted by the fact that they are berries.

Anyhoo, bell peppers, a plant of Central and South America, were called peppers simply because that was the name given to most hot or spicy plants, and bell peppers, first called so in the 17th century because, yes, someone thought they looked like a bell.

Have you ever had stuffed peppers? Though it is thought that people have stuffed peppers since they first started cultivating them, the modern iteration of this dish that we all grew up loving – or, if you were like most kids, loathing – was in cookbooks as early as the 1890s.

A word about the peppers; it’s customary to use green peppers in this dish. In truth, green, red, orange and yellow peppers are all the same plant, but the red/orange/yellow color comes when the pepper ripens. When they are green and underripe they have a stronger flavor, with a bitterness that some think pairs well with the mild flavor of rice and ground beef. However, if you are catering to fussy palates, I would advise the more colorful peppers for the milder flavor profile.

For my dish I came across some pretty ones in the grocery store called Aloha peppers. They’re striped in reds and oranges and were irresistible.

Traditionally, stuffed peppers is a baked dish, and you could bake these; they will hold their shape better. But using the slow cooker renders them soft and easy to eat, and the aim here is to make a food like peppers more appetising to those fussy palates I just spoke of! These turn out delicious, oozy, cheesy and delectably fork-tender.

SLOW COOKER STUFFED PEPPERS

(Makes 4 large, or 5-6 smaller.

Ingredients

4 large or 5-6 smaller bell peppers – see instructions to prep (Use whatever colour you like!)

Pieces of the peppers when cap is removed, diced fine

1 small onion, diced fine

2 fat cloves of garlic, diced fine

¾ lb lean ground beef

1 cup cooked rice (I used Basmati)

8 oz cream cheese

1 cup grated Monterey jack cheese

½ tsp smoked paprika

½ tsp onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

1 – Prepare peppers. Evenly cut off the cap of the pepper, discard the stem, seeds and membrane, then dice the left-over pieces of pepper. *Note; a serrated grapefruit spoon works great for taking the membrane out of the pepper!

2 – Fry the hamburger gently, scoop out of pan and set aside. If there is too much oil in the pan, discard it. Otherwise…

3 - Dice the onion and add it and the diced red pepper to the pan and sauté in the oils from the hamburger until onion is translucent and pepper is softened. Add the diced garlic for the last minute, and cook until soft.

4 – Add cooked beef, rice, cream cheese and grated cheese to pan and warm through until the cheese is melted.

5 – Stuff mixture into prepared peppers, patting down to fill every cavity, and place the peppers in a slow cooker, with a little water in the bottom. I like a ‘casserole’ style slow cooker, but whatever you have that the peppers will fit into will work fine.

6 – Cook on low for 3 hours, or until the peppers are cooked, but still hold their shape.

Serve!

These were absolutely delicious. You could alter the ingredients if you like to make a larger or smaller batch. Enjoy, my friends, while you read my Vintage Kitchen Mystery #13, Masher of Ceremonies!

GIVEAWAY: Comment to enter to win a $50 USD Amazon Gift Card. Draw is open to Canada and US readers and closes Midnight, May 19th! Tell me your favorite comfort food, please, or if you have ever made/eaten stuffed peppers!

A fundraiser for the local historical society nearly goes bust when someone fills the coffers with blackmail and murder . . .

The annual Tea With the Queen fundraiser always makes for a festive weekend in Queensville, drawing visitors from far and wide and giving local shops a welcome boost. This year, vintage kitchenware collector Jaymie Müller is running the event, and she’s got her hands full organizing old and new volunteers along with a surly catering crew. Then her master of ceremonies tells her he’s being blackmailed but can’t go to the police, and before Jaymie can sort that out she stumbles over a dead body at the tea.

Despite the demands of keeping the event up and running, Jaymie can’t help puzzling over the murder. There’s no concrete evidence linking the cretin behind the blackmail scheme to the dead body, so she begins questioning everyone connected to the blackmail, hoping to expose the killer. And just as she discovers a web of relationships that leads her to the culprit, she realizes that the Tea With the Queen may have been a royal pain, but outwitting a blackmailer and catching a killer may be the death of her . . .

Guest Victoria Hamilton's Homemade Turkey Sausage #recipe #giveaway

Today the Kitchen is pleased to present the marvelous Victoria Hamilton, with a delicious recipe from her Merry Muffin Mysteries. And she's doing an incredible GIVEAWAY of a "Hug From Canada" gift package! So be sure to leave a comment below, for a chance to win this terrific prize. Take it away, Victoria:

Hello Mystery Lovers!

My main character in the Merry Muffin Mysteries is Merry Wynter, who – spoiler alert – bakes muffins as part of her income, trying to keep her real American castle solvent by selling them to local coffee shops, bakeries and the senior home her mother-in-law owns.

In Thanks for Muffin (Merry Muffin Mystery #8 – coming out October 14th, 2025!) she and her business partner Pish Lincoln are finally seeing the culmination of their dreams, a gala opening of the long planned and awaited Wynter Woods Center for the Performing Arts. They have invited luminaries to celebrate with them at a dinner and party.

But they have also invited a number of the social media influencers, most with local connections, to stay over the long Thanksgiving Weekend, which means serving to a dozen or so people a buffet of breakfast items every morning, as well as the other meals. Of course murder will interrupt the weekend, but folks still have to eat!

This recipe is the kind of thing Merry would make from scratch for folks wanting protein, but low fat. A healthy kind of sausage! What makes a good sausage? It’s all about the herbs and spices. These patties benefit from the fresh sage, which pairs so perfectly with turkey anyway. That’s why I have a good amount of fresh sage from my garden in it, as well as the ground sage.

So these are easy, yes, but I created it mostly because I like them a lot! Having them on hand makes my morning fast and easy when I make these ahead of time and keep them in the freezer!

Merry’s Homemade Turkey Sausage

Ingredients:

1 lb lean ground turkey, light and dark meat, preferably.

1/3 cup Italian breadcrumbs

¾ tsp ground sage

½ tsp ground rosemary

½ tsp salt

½ tsp pepper

¼ tsp garlic powder

¼ tsp marjoram or oregano

¼ tsp smoked paprika

¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes

Optional (but recommended!)

½ - 1 tbsp minced fresh sage

½ - 1 tbsp minced fresh parsley

Combine all spices, then mix the spices and breadcrumbs with the ground turkey, working it well into the meat but not overworking!

Divide into eight approximately 2 ounce portions; I do use a scale for this step, as for me it simplifies things and reduces the guesswork. You could just divide the mixture, eyeballing it.

Flatten into patties, or make into sausage lengths.

Spray light high-temp oil into pan, then grill the sausages, browning nicely and flipping. Don’t overcook! They only take a few minutes on each side.

Serve with eggs, or other breakfast items! As patties they pair perfectly with an egg and English muffin for breakfast sandwiches.

Full disclosure: this is my favorite breakfast, an Egg McHamilton, if you will! I love Dempsters’ (A Canadian company) Everything English Muffin because they have wonderful flavor.

These sausage patties freeze well after cooking.

Enjoy your quick work day or school day breakfast!

About Thanks for Muffin:

When Merry Wynter’s festive gala takes a fatal turn, she’ll have to grill her guests to catch a killer . . .

After years of planning and hard work, Merry Wynter was finally ready to host the grand opening gala of the Wynter Woods Center for the Performing Arts. With musicians, entertainers, members of the media and even influencers on the guest list, the event went off without a hitch—until a particularly nasty journalist posted a criticism of the gala and everything Merry was trying to accomplish. Still reeling from the review days later, Merry wasn’t sure what to feel when she discovered the reporter’s dead body on the grounds of Wynter Castle.

With many of her guests staying on at the castle for the weekend, Merry realizes they’ve got a murderer in their midst. Going from celebrating to sleuthing, she discreetly questions each of them, trying to weed out the culprit. She quickly learns that the victim had heated arguments with several of the people at the gala, and it turns out those people were all connected by a tragedy in the past. Certain the killer is among them, Merry will have to unearth the final clue that nails the killer—before the killer decides she’s getting too close . . .

Includes delicious recipes!

Quickie Ground Beef Stroganoff #giveaway

Please join me in welcoming today's guest author, our friend and colleague, the very talented Victoria Hamilton, who is here to share a terrific recipe for those busy September days that are just around the corner and also to give us a glimpse at her forthcoming vintage kitchen mystery.  Plus Victoria has a fabulous giveaway for one lucky commenter who answers her question. Make sure you read to the end to get the details!

Quickie Ground Beef  Stroganoff  By: Victoria Hamilton

It’s almost September. Things get super busy in September for many people, and there will be days when you don’t have the slightest idea what to make for dinner, nothing sounds good, so you grab a box of that fabulous (!!) cooking crutch, Hamburger Helper. I’ve done it many times. Super easy: fry ground beef, open a box, and add water. Voila, dinner is served. Get fancy and you’ll add a salad or green beans on the side.

But in truth, do-it-yourself Stroganoff Hamburger Helper is almost as easy, still just one pan, and no powdered sour cream necessary… use the real thing! Yes, you need more than two ingredients, but it doesn’t take a whole lot more time and it truly is better. And better for you. (I wouldn’t lie to you… I only do that in my novels)

And dang… you can still make those garlicky green beans on the side, serve a glass of wine, and call yourself Fancy!

Here is my take on Hamburger Helper’s Beef Stroganoff, using my Curtis Stone electric frying pan, which I like because it is super deep and beautifully non-stick.

Ingredients

1 lb Ground beef

8 oz Cremini mushrooms (baby Portobello and button mushrooms are the same and can be substituted… I forgot to photograph them for the ingredients, so they get their own photo!)

3 tbsp olive oil

2 cloves garlic

1 small chopped onion – OR – half a large sweet onion

2 tsp smoked paprika

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp ground black pepper

3 stalks parsley

3 – 4 cups beef broth

8 oz egg noodles

½ - 2/3 cup sour cream

Method

Prep the veggies! Slice the *mushrooms however you want… I like mine thin-ish, but thicker works too. Dice your onions and chop the garlic ahead of time too… this meal comes together very quickly. (*A word about mushrooms… when you fry mushrooms, make sure they are dry and go into a hot pan and that you don’t salt and pepper until they have started to brown. That’s how you get perfect mushrooms every time!)

Heat one tablespoon of the olive oil until it starts to spit, then add the mushrooms (make sure these are dry) and cook until they are tender and slightly browned. This will take just five minutes or so. Remove them from the pan with a slotted spoon to a bowl.

Heat remaining two tablespoons of olive oil and add the onion, season with salt and pepper and cook on low to medium heat until translucent… another five minutes or so. Stir in the garlic and cook over low heat very briefly, then add the ground beef, breaking it up as you add it to the pan. Continue to cook until it is browned and cooked through. This is when you decide how big you want your ground beef bits to be, larger clumps or smaller bits. Sprinkle in the paprika, stir to combine.

Pour in the beef broth and the noodles, bring to a light boil, then turn way down and cover the electric skillet. Continue to cook, stirring it often, until the noodles are done to your liking, probably 10 to 15 minutes.

Turn off the heat and stir in the mushrooms and sour cream, incorporating completely.

Serve immediately, topped with a sprinkling of the fresh chopped parsley. I like it with a side dish of green beans, simmered and then dressed with butter and chopped garlic!

Thanksgiving Poutine with Victoria Hamilton

Please help us welcome Victoria Hamilton to Mystery Lovers' Kitchen today. I love this recipe. I'm so impressed. After many years on this blog, it's hard to surprise me with a recipe. I am fascinated by the Poutine and must try it.

Don't miss Victoria's generous giveaway. Scroll to the bottom for details.

Happy Thanksgiving from a Canadian!

Thanksgiving dinner… my favorite meal of the year. I love the turkey, the stuffing, and everything else, including the gravy… lots of gravy! The way we cook our turkey the gravy from just the drippings is delicious, with no need of a boost with bouillon or any such nonsense. And the next day, we have the same meal again! And then after that we have turkey sandwiches, and I make turkey soup, the best soup I make all year. (Can you sense a trend about how I feel about turkey?)

But… how much turkey and stuffing can you eat before it’s too much? I’ve tried the casserole ubiquitous on Pinterest… you know the one, with the turkey and stuffing and all the trimmings in a casserole dish. It’s… okaaaay. But not good enough for all the trouble it is. So after our Canadian Thanksgiving in October I decided I wanted to do something different with the leftovers. We still had so much turkey and stuffing.

I’m Canadian (not French Canadian, but Canadian nonetheless), so my mind naturally turns to… Poutine. Have you ever had Poutine? In its classic French Canadian Quebecois form Poutine is French fries, cheese curds and lots of brown gravy hot enough to burn your tongue so it melts the cheese. Anglos have co-opted it - of course - and now Poutine is on every fast food restaurant menu in Canada, with a thousand variations, French fries being the base ingredient in them all. I have had Poutine with cheeseburger toppings (chopped up burgers and cheddar, with gravy) and an Italian version with pepperoni, mozzarella and marinara sauce. Even fast food restaurants up here have Poutine on their menu!

I think I actually dreamed this recipe. Have you ever dreamed a recipe? This came to me and I’m happy it did. Anyway, with apologies to my French Canadian brother and sisters, here is my own version, Thanksgiving Poutine, a wonderful way to use up turkey, stuffing and gravy!

Thanksgiving Poutine

Ingredients:

2 Cups Leftover Turkey, chopped into bite size pieces or shredded.

1 Cup Leftover Stuffing; you should be able to break this up into smallish pieces as well.

1 Pound Frozen French Fries (or equivalent homemade.) (I used Southern Style frozen fries for some zip!)

1 Tsp Ground Thyme

½ Tsp Old Bay

1 or 2 Tbsp Turkey Drippings (or olive oil)

2 Cups Turkey Gravy

2 Cups grated cheese (I used a mix of Monterey Jack and old cheddar.)

Cranberry Sauce (optional)

Method:

1 – Cube or shred the turkey and stuffing ahead of time.

2 - Preheat oven to whatever the directions on the frozen fries packaging says. Prepare the baking sheet – I use parchment under my oven fries to protect the baking sheet - and put the French fries in the oven to bake. They usually take about 20 minutes or so, but follow their recommendation. You could make your own fries, if you are so inclined, and you could certainly deep fry your French fries if you like.

3 – Warm the cubed or shredded turkey gently in a nonstick frying pan in some of the turkey drippings, or olive oil. Sprinkle the thyme and Old Bay over it and toss it gently as you heat the turkey. Leave room in the pan to warm the stuffing, as well, but do not put it on high heat! You don’t want to fry the turkey and stuffing, you just want it heated thoroughly.

4 – Grate the cheese and heat your leftover gravy. If you don’t have any leftover gravy, then make some packaged gravy.

5 – When the fries are done put some in a shallow bowl, layer some hot turkey, stuffing and cheese over it, a few more fries, some more turkey, stuffing, cheese and then, last but not least, drown it in piping hot gravy, which will melt the cheese. Serve immediately. Some may want a little cranberry sauce with it.

Enjoy! This is a decadent treat, easy and so very very good as a lunch or dinner. When I served this the comment was “Mmmmph… sooo good! You have to make this again.” I think it would be particularly popular with kids/teens/grandkids.
