Japanese Restaurant-Style Salad #recipe by @LeslieKarst

I have no idea if they serve the dish in Japan, but this delicious salad is commonly found in Japanese restaurants here in the States. It’s a simple green salad tossed with an Asian-inspired mayonnaise dressing, and is something I happen to love. So some years back, I decided to reverse-engineer the recipe, and here’s what I came up with.

The amounts in this recipe make enough dressing for a very large salad—I made one for a party, big enough to feed 10 people. But whatever you don’t use can be stored in the fridge for later use. Simply thin it again with a bit more milk, if you find that it’s thickened after several days.

Japanese Restaurant-Style Salad

Ingredients for Salad

(these are merely a suggestion—use whatever and how many ingredients you like)

romaine or other green-leaf lettuce, ripped into bite-size pieces

sliced tomatoes

cucumber chunks

sliced avocado

green onions or chives

crumbled pretzels, nuts, croutons, or whatever crunchy addition strikes your fancy

Ingredients for Dressing

(makes a little over ½ cup)

½ cup mayonnaise

1 tablespoon roasted sesame oil

2 teaspoons soy sauce

1-2 teaspoons sugar (to taste)

1/8 teaspoon black pepper

2 teaspoons milk (not pictured)

Directions

Mix all the dressing ingredients together, except the milk.

mayonnaise and sesame oil

soy sauce

pepper

sugar

Then add the milk and mix it in well, to thin the dressing.

Place all the salad ingredients into a large bowl,

then toss with the dressing. Don’t overdress the salad; if it’s a salad for 4 people, a third of the dressing should suffice.

Enjoy!

  2. I like the idea of adding pretzels as a crunch for a salad.

    1. Don't tell anyone, but the pretzels bites were ones I got on a plane flight. I always save them for salad garnishes.

  3. The dressing sounds like a winner for sure!
I've always thought salads in an Asian restaurant seemed out of place but I enjoy eating them. Part of the magic may be the sesame oil.
