VMBURNS: I have always been intimidated by homemade bread. Don't ask me why, but I'm sure it had something to do with adding yeast, or maybe it was the kneading, or well...I have no idea. However, after five decades, I was preparing to make soup and kept thinking how yummy if I had bread for dipping. It was late at night and my first thought was to order bread and have it delivered with my groceries the next day. While I love the convenience of having someone else shop and deliver groceries (I hate grocery shopping almost as much as a trip to the dentist), a recent shopper mishap meant that I had serious trust issues. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across a recipe that claimed to be easy with no kneading above a picture of a beautiful loaf of bread. I read the recipe (and about 15 others) and they all looked similar. There were only 4 ingredients. How scary could it be? So, I did it. I made bread and it came out deliciously well. Next time (and there will definitely be a next time) I'm going to try some of the variations (rosemary, cheese, etc.).

In this delectable new cozy mystery series, social media maven Maddy Montgomery’s perfectly ’grammable life has come undone, and she’s #StartingOver in a tiny town with one giant problem—a killer on the loose . . .
When Maddy Montgomery’s groom is a no-show to their livestream wedding, it’s a disaster that no amount of filtering can fix. But a surprise inheritance offers a chance to regroup and rebrand—as long as Maddy is willing to live in her late, great-aunt Octavia’s house in New Bison, Michigan, for a year, running her bakery and caring for a 250-pound English mastiff named Baby.
Maddy doesn’t bake, and her Louboutins aren’t made for walking giant dogs around Lake Michigan, but the locals are friendly and the scenery is beautiful. With help from her aunt’s loyal friends, aka the Baker Street Irregulars, Maddy feels ready to tackle any challenge, including Octavia’s award-winning cake recipes. That is, until New Bison’s mayor is fatally stabbed, and Maddy’s fingerprints are found on the knife . . .
Something strange is going on in New Bison. It seems Aunt Octavia had her suspicions, too. But Maddy’s going to need a whole lot more than a trending hashtag to save her reputation—and her life.
Wow, Valerie, I am going to try this. I lost my sourdough mojo during pandemic lockdown and have given up, but it uses the Dutch oven method. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHope it turns out well. Looking forward to more homemade bread.
DeleteValerie, that is one of my two favorite bread recipes! I've probably made it 100 times, as per your recipe, and other ways, too: with half whole wheat flour, with herbs, with roasted garlic, and even with cinnamon. It's so versatile, and foolproof.
ReplyDeleteOh that is so good to know. I may try experimenting, now that I'm not scared. :-)
DeleteYum, that looks so delicious! I make bread in my bread machine all the time. My favorite bread to make is Focaccia bread. Another favorite is homemade sandwich bread. So good!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance! Would be delighted to read review!
jarjm1980(@)hotmail(dot)com
I just tried Focaccia and it was yummy, too. Who knew bread was this easy?
DeleteMy mom made a lot of bread when I was a kid and I still love making it, the smell and taste of warm, fresh bread. My favorite is her homemade biscuits.
ReplyDeleteOne year for Mother's Day, dad wanted to get her a bread machine (they were just coming out at the time.) He took me shopping for one while mom was at work. I was only 2 or 3 at the time and dad told me not to tell. Well, mom asked what we did, and I didn't tell that part but I said we went to the bookstore. Mom asked if we got a book and I told her a bread machine cookbook. Well, obviously why would we get a cookbook for it when we didn't have a machine, so secret was out! Dad should have been more specific 😄 oops. Still get laughed at for that even though I don't even remember it myself!

Alicia, that's hilarious. No one twice your age could have done better.
DeleteI often bake bread and enjoy trying out new recipes, so this one is definitely on my list to try. I do have a couple of "go to" recipes, though. For a loaf bread I can't beat King Arthur Baking "Walter Sands Basic White Bread". The Cleo Coyle recipe for Thirty Minute Dinner Rolls (Dead to the Last Drop) is really quick and easy and for the holidays I traditionally make squash rolls (even enjoyed by those who hate squash. lroth(at)pcext(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of squash rolls, but I'm going to have to look them up.
DeleteYour bread is so delectable and yummy. I have baked challah and everyone praised it so I will be making it again this winter every weekend. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteYum. That sounds great and you have something to look forward to this winter.
DeleteMaking bread takes patience and a skill. I have attempted to many times and have mastered a baguette type bread which is my favorite. The artisan bread is a beauty. elliotbencan(at)hotmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteThanks. I will definitely make again.
DeleteLove baking bread in a Dutch oven. This looks delish, Valerie. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt was tasty and I enjoyed eating it, especially since I made it myself.
DeleteNever made bread. Too small of a kitchen. cheetahthecat1982ATgmailDOTcom
ReplyDeleteThis was so easy. I'll definitely do it again.
DeleteI've made that recipe before but I prefer this one when I'm in a hurry. Sometimes I add a splash of olive oil to make it more Italian (soft) than French (crusty)

That's awesome. Thank you for sharing. I'll give it a try next time.
DeleteI love to bake bread. I find kneading, even briefly, very soothing.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, I need to make some for tomorrow. I think I'll try your version.

PS One advantage of your recipe with the dough sitting for hours on its own is it develops more flavor.
DeleteI'm just a breadmaking rookie. I haven't progressed to kneading yet. I hope your bread is as delicious as mine was.
DeleteI make a swedish coffee bread for Christmas that has cardamom, my favorite spice. It is delicious toasted with butter! Thank you for the recipe, and Happy Thanksgiving! aut1063(at)gmail(com)
ReplyDeleteSwedish Coffee Bread sounds delicious.
DeleteThis sounds yummy. My favorite to make these days is Beer Bread. We started making in during the pandemic when you couldn't find yeast. Quick, easy and delicious.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea there was a shortage of yeast, too. Darned COVID!
DeleteI used to make bread all the time. It's very time consuming, but it's worth it. I haven't made bread in years, it's easier to pick it up at the store or bakery.
ReplyDeletediannekc8(at)gmail(dot)com
It is easy to pick up at the grocery store, but oh...the smell.
DeleteHubby and I love to make breads - rolls, French bread, and sweet rolls. We are always experimenting with new ones too.
ReplyDeleteLOVED the book! Not entering the contest so someone who hasn't read it will be able to enjoy it.

That's awesome that you two make bread together. I hope to get bold enough to try more recipes. Glad you enjoyed the book.
DeleteI've never made yeast bread, too intimidated by the kneading, rising, etc. and now I don't have a large enough oven.
ReplyDeletewskwared(at)yahoo(dot)com
I completely understand. I was intimidated, too. A small oven is a hard obstacle to overcome.
DeleteI have made bread off and on over the years and my favorite recipe that I go back to is also very simple like yours. Its an Oatmeal bread with molasses and is no-knead as well, 7 ingredients, no fuss, great every time. I add sunflower seeds or walnuts, occasionally cinnamon or raisins. Would love the opportunity to read a new author! AnitaKD59@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteOatmeal bread sounds yummy, too. I love just about anything with nuts or cinnamon. Good luck in the drawing!
DeleteI have never made homemade bread but this looks good!

ReplyDeleteYour bread looks delicious and simple to bake! Yum! And congrats to you for overcoming your fear of baking bread.
I always love bread or pastry since I was a child..but we didn't do any baking because we didn't have an oven.. Fast forward to today...my husband started to bake different kinds of bread during pandemic stay-home..and he bakes more often after he retired 2 years ago..He has baked sourdough, honey wheat bread, whole wheat bread / burger and hotdog buns as he can customize the sizes. .I love them all.

It really is easy and delicious! I never do well with yeast, but this has given a little more courage to try making dinner rolls 😬 ….maybe!
