#Guest and #Giveaway! #Frosted Brownies by Debra Sennefelder

It's my great pleasure to welcome Debra Sennefelder back to MLK.   She has a yummy recipe and a terrific giveaway that she's agree to share with all of  you. Leave a comment about your favorite kind of brownie for a chance to win a signed copy of her new book Three Widows and a Corpse.

I’m so thrilled to be back here in the Mystery Lovers’ Kitchen and sharing one of my favorite recipes. It’s no secret that I have a weakness for chocolate and that means I never pass up an opportunity to add in one or two or three chocolate recipes in my Food Blogger mysteries. In this new installment of the series, I share a recipe for Frosted Brownies, which I love. Honestly, I’ve never met a brownie I didn’t love. It’s moist with a bit of a crunch thanks to the chocolate chips and topped with a heavenly chocolate frosting.

Ingredients for brownies:

¾ cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt

½ cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes
3 ounces unsweetened chocolate, finely chopped
½ cup granulated sugar
½ cup light brown sugar
2 eggs
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup semisweet chocolate chips
Extra butter for preparing baking dish

Directions:
Brownies
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Butter an 8-inch square baking dish and line with parchment paper. Be sure to let excess hang over for easy removal of brownies. Butter the parchment paper and set aside.

In small bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Place butter and unsweetened chocolate in a double boiler. Stir occasionally until the chocolate and butter are melted and smooth.

Remove the bowl from the saucepan and whisk in the granulated and brown sugars. Next whisk in the egg, the yolk, and the vanilla extract.

Next add in the flour mixture all at once and combine with spatula.

Fold in chocolate chips.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until cake tester inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs attached.
Cool completely, then frost and serve! Servings will depend how large you cut each brownie.

Ingredients for frosting:
6 tablespoons butter, softened
2⅔ cups confectioners’ sugar
½ cup baking cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼–⅓ cup whole milk

Frosting
In a large bowl, using either a stand or hand-held mixer, cream together butter and confectioners’ sugar until light and fluffy.
Add in cocoa and vanilla and beat until combined.
Add in enough milk until the frosting achieves a smooth spreading consistency.
Spread over cooled brownies.

About THREE WIDOWS AND A CORPSE
Food blogger Hope Early finds one item not on her scavenger hunt list—a dead husband . . . Between developing her food blog, Hope at Home, and choosing low-cal recipes for a feature in Cooking Now! magazine, Hope has a full plate. Still, she’s never too busy to compete in a Jefferson, Connecticut, tradition—the town’s annual scavenger hunt.

But as she races with her team to check off the next item, Hope discovers a grisly surprise—the body of shady real estate developer Lionel Whitcomb, shot in a parking lot. His wife Elaine, who’s also in the hunt, gasps and nearly faints. But two other women on the scene cry out that their husband is dead.

It turns out this louse of a spouse was more than a little lax in legally divorcing his former wives. Did one of them put a bullet in the bigamist? Number one suspect and number three wife Elaine begs Hope to investigate. Now Hope is on a new kind of hunt—for a cold-hearted killer and triple widow-maker . . .

Thanks for the idea of mint brownies. I've added raspberry flavoring to my brownies but never mint. I'll have to try. Have a great Sunday!

  13. Like you, I love all brownies. Your recipe sounds like the one my Mom used when I was a kid other than it would have been doubled I'm sure. With my family and as fast as they disappeared, it was also a sheet cake sized batch and even then it did good to last two days. This size is just right for hubby and I. I can see a hot pan of brownies in our near future!

I do love brownies with chunks of chocolate (milk or white chocolate), with pecans pieces, with extra gooeyness like caramel or cream cheese and with or without icing. I really love the little brownie pans for baking too because I've always loved the edge pieces the best and that way they are all edge pieces. Face it say brownie and I'm there!

Thank you for the opportunity to win a copy of "Three Widows and a Corpse" which is definitely on my TBR list!

    Sharing and hoping. <3

  14. Book looks like a great read. Love the idea of a scavenger hunt. And thank you for the brownie recipe. Love brownies, as a chocoholic, they are my favorite go to. Gotta try this recipe. But 1/2 cup of chips?? Nah. Not enough. A whole bag please. I have tried 4 different variations of brownies, my sister loves the raspberry ones. But for me. Nope. Plain ole chocolate, double chocolate, triple chocolate brownies for me. Deeply appreciate the chance for one of your books. deepotter at centurylink dot net

  15. I like brownies that are more cake-y than fudge-y. I'm not big on most sweets, but I do LOVE dark chocolate. When I say dark chocolate, I mean really dark chocolate, the kind that isn't really sweet at all. So maybe brownies with some of that thrown in! Renee

Years ago when my dad's French secretary(a family friend) moved back to France she wrote & asked me to send her my brownie recipe as her family heard her rave about them. It was given to me by my late M-I-L, from Helen Corbitt's Cookbook, for Fudge Brownie Fingers. They bacame a big hit for her loved ones in Nice, so funny to me, as they are so simple!

  46. Wow brownies sound so good we were at an American Legion steak feed last night and the lady made the duncan hines brownies and they were even good but homemade are the best,. Today since my hubby was done watching a Minn game he went out to the kitchen and made 5 dozen choc chip carmel and i said what are you doing with all of those and he said well i will be dropping them off at peoples houses I said save me some, He said not to worry as brownie week was next week wow he usually only make potatoe salad and bring it to the american legion dinners so it sounds like he is going to really be cooking. I can't as I am disabled with RSD but i sit there and give him my opiouions. peggy clayton ptclayton2 at aol,.com

  47. I like brownies with pecans, and mimi chocolate chips. But I like plain brownies too. I like them a bit on the chewy side, so corner pieces and day old brownies are just fine with me.
Mother made brownies from scratch, and I did too for a long time. But for many years now I have used a box mix -- the one with the chocolate syrup packet.
