Cubed Steak #recipe @vmburns

VMBURNS: I love cubed steak. Its one of the foods that I like to eat as a leftover. For some reason, I love cubed steak sandwiches with white bread and mayonnaise. Weird? Maybe, but don't knock it until you try it.

I often use Lipton Mushroom or Onion Soup Mix to make my gravy, so you will note that it's in the picture, but I didn't use it this time. I also think an entire onion was a lot, so I will probably include less onions next time. Otherwise, it was great.

CUBED STEAK

  • INGREDIENTS

  • 14 cubed steaks
  • 6 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced
  • 1 Teaspoons Black pepper
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
  • 2 Teaspoons Paprika
  • 2 Cups beef broth
  • 1/4 Cup flour + 2 Tablespoons
  • 2 Teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

  • INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Pound steaks for 10 seconds per side with a meat tenderizer.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of butter to a large skillet on medium heat.
  3. Add the onions and cook until translucent (about 5 minutes), then remove.

  4. Season the steaks with salt, pepper, paprika, and dredge in 2 tablespoons of flour.

  5. Cook the steaks 5 minutes on each side on med. high heat, and then remove.

  6. Add the remaining butter and flour to the pan. Do NOT clean the pan. You want the steak bits for your gravy. Whisk well for about 1 minute.

  7. Whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce until smooth, and let it cook for 4-5 minutes until the gravy thickens.

  8. Add the steaks and onions back to the pan.

    ICING ON THE MURDER

Influencer-turned-bakery-owner Maddy Montgomery has sold plenty of wedding cakes before, but before she turns one out for her and her fiancé’s wedding, she’ll have to solve a little case of murder . . .

Aunt Octavia would be so proud! Maddy has turned Baby Cakes Bakery—named for her 250-pound English Mastiff, Baby—into a runaway success,
and she’s marrying the love of her life, veterinarian Michael Portman. #DreamWedding! Plus the timing couldn’t be better: the country’s biggest bridal expo has come to New Bison, Michigan, and Maddy has secured a spot for Baby Cakes to showcase their cakes. She’s also entered a contest for an all-expenses-paid wedding extravaganza offered by world-renowned wedding planner Serafina.

Unfortunately, supremely nasty Serafina truly takes the cake—she makes the worst bridezilla seem like a shy flower girl. But there’s one thing the wedding planner didn’t plan on—being impaled by one of the skewers Baby Cakes uses on their tiered wedding cakes.

While Maid of Honor Sheriff April Johnson rounds up suspects at the expo, Maddy and her aunt’s friends, the Baker Street Irregulars, and even Baby join forces to unveil a killer hiding in plain sight . . . before wedding bells start to chime.

  2. Thank you for the Cubed Steak recipe and for the memories it invoked. Growing up in the south, we called this smothered steak. Mom always used the bottom part of round steak to make it and pounded in on both side with a kitchen mallet, which pretty much gives it the same texture as cubed steak. It's the tougher part of the round steak, but she started the gravy and put the browned steak and sliced onion in and baked it, which allowed enough baking time for the steak to tender up.
Being of the generation of not letting anything go to waste, we used leftovers very often for sandwiches the next day for lunch.

  5. Valerie, I’ve always been a fan of cube steak sandwiches with fried onions and mayonnaise. So simple but so good! I usually sneak in a slice of tomato, too. For some reason, I never made the gravy with them, but your recipe has me thinking I’ve been missing out. Next time, it’s gravy time!

  6. Sounds so homey.
I'm puzzled by this ingredient: "14 cubed steaks"
Is that 14 onces? Surely it isn't 14 steaks!
