Shepherd’s Pie from @TinaKashian1 #giveaway

Hello from TINA KASHIAN! A couple weeks ago we went to an Irish Pub and my husband ordered Shepherd’s Pie. I ordered a cheeseburger and regretted my decision as soon as I tasted a bite of his food. I’ve been craving Shepherd’s Pie ever since and decided to try to make it on my own. It’s not difficult to make but has a few steps. I was rewarded for my effort when my two teen girls liked the dish. Always a win!

Ingredients for mashed potato topping:

2 pounds of potatoes peeled and cut into chunks

4 tbsp butter

¼ cup sour cream

¼ cup milk

Salt and pepper to taste

Ingredients for mashed potato topping:

1 pound lean ground beef

1 small onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 cups of frozen peas, carrots, and corn (I used fresh carrots and diced them)

½ cup beef broth

1 tbsp tomato paste

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Boil the potatoes in water until fork tender. Drain the water. Add butter, sour cream, milk, and salt and pepper Mash the potatoes with a mixer until creamy. Set aside in a bowl.

In a large skillet, brown the ground beef along with the onions and garlic. Drain excess fat/grease.

Add the peas, carrots, and corn and cook for 7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook uncovered for ten minutes.

Spray a 9 x 13 dish with nonstick spray. Spread the meat mixture in an even layer. Top the meat with the mashed potatoes and smooth with the back of a spoon. You can use a fork to make ridges in the potatoes. The ridges will brown well.

Bake for 30 minutes until brown. Enjoy!

Lucy Berberian is busy preparing her family’s Mediterranean restaurant for Easter on the Jersey Shore—but a batch of sweets is to die for . . .

Bikers are thundering into the seaside town of Ocean Crest for the annual Bikers on the Beach gathering that raises funds for injured veterans. It’s a big boost for the Kebab Kitchen, as well as for local businesses like Melanie Haven’s candy shop. But Melanie is about to find herself in a sticky situation.

When Melanie and Lucy attend a beach bonfire, a local landlord is found dead after apparently choking on a piece of salt water taffy. Melanie, who was known to have a contentious relationship with the victim, is quickly skewered as the prime suspect. But Lucy is determined to prove her friend’s innocence before the real killer coasts free . . .

  1. I like Shepherd's Pie. It's delicious, but very time consuming. My go-to comfort food is meatloaf served with mashed potatoes, tomato gravy and green beans.

    1. Hi Brenda! Shepherd's Pie is time consuming to make and has lot of steps. I will make it occasionally whenever we have a craving. I also like meatloaf and mashed potatoes as a comfort food!

  2. I've never eaten Shepherd's Pie, but it sounds yummy.

My favorite comfort food has to be homemade vegetable beef soup. Growing up it was a way Mom used leftover roast along with a wide array of fresh veggies when possible. However, most times it was made with a bag of veggies Mom had frozen from leftovers. So I guess soup was really a way to use up all leftovers. I know that the flavor just got better when reheated making leftover left overs worthy of even company. There's nothing better to feel up your tummy, get all your daily needs if protein and veggies and to bring back sweet memories.

Thank you for the chance to win a signed, print copy of ON THE LAMB! Most definitely on my TBR list and can't wait for the opportunity to read it. Shared but hoping to be the lucky one selected.

    1. Hi Kay! Thank you for stopping by. A local diner makes the best vegetable beef soup. I've make a version of this during the cold winter months and it's a favorite.

    1. Hello! What's great about Shepherd's Pie is that you can vary the vegetables you include depending on what you have on hand. My friend adds string beans. Any variety is tasty. Good luck!

  7. Shepherd's pie is traditionally made with minced lamb (hence it's name)--and thus a perfect dish to accompany your new book, Tina! (When it's made with beef, I gather it's called "cottage pie"--at least in the U.K.)

It's one of my very favorite dishes, but since it's pretty labor intensive, I rarely make it. But I do order it when out at restaurants! Yum!

  10. I'm with Leslie about the lamb vs beef. It was often a way to use up left over leg of lamb (joint of lamb), being an economical and efficient way to recycle leftovers.

  13. Hi Tina,
I am just finding you as a cozy author and I’m excited to read your work. We share a Mediterranean background and a love of food. My Sitto was from Lebanon and my dad’s family was English/Scottish, so Shepherd’s pie was often a go to as an evening meal.
What series or book should I start with?

  15. I love Shepherd's Pie and my one time-saving tip has always been to make extra mashed 'taters for dinner the night before & use them the next day for the pie! I have several favorite comfort foods, and most include carbs and cheese, like any pasta, rice or potato dish (scalloped au gratin); Italian wedding soup, minestrone, potato soup, casseroles, & Tex-Mex with tortillas, besides grilled cheese sandwiches and the usual stand-by that all kids love: mac & cheese. lola777-22 at hotmail dot com

  18. Shepherd's Pie was one of the first pub recipes I wanted to make when I started researching pub grub. I haven't made yet but this recipe is inspiring me to try it. I love eating Shepherd's Pie because potatoes in any form are my favorite comfort food. I often order meatloaf and mashed potatoes at our favorite restaurant which is a small family-owned & operated restaurant where we know everyone & we're greeted like family when we go there -- much like the restaurant in the kebab kitchen mysteries. lnchudej@yahoo.com
