Ham Steak with Pineapple and Bourbon

Believe it or not, I'm still cleaning out the refrigerator from the holidays. This ham steak remained and has been taunting me every day.

The truth is that ham steak, which is simply a round cut about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick is pretty good all by itself. It does need some warming up but that's super easy. So the question becomes how to dress it up. I happened to have a fresh pineapple, so I made a little sauce. To kick it up just a notch, I added a bit of Bourbon at the very end.

You can play with these basics all you like. Pineapple and ham have been friends for a long time. I used butter instead of olive oil because I thought the sauce would taste better. Seriously, the most complicated part of this recipe is cutting up the pineapple! Anyone can do that, right?

Ham Steak with Pineapple and Bourbon

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 ham steak
1 fresh pineapple
1 small onion
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon powdered mustard
2 tablespoons Bourbon

Warm the butter in a pan over medium heat until it melts. Add the ham steak and cook 2 1/2 to 3 minutes on each side. Don't overcook! Meanwhile, dice the onion and cut the pineapple into 1-inch chunks. Remove the ham from the pan and keep warm.

Add the brown sugar and mustard to the butter left in the pan and stir to combine. Add the onion and pineapple. Cook, stirring occasionally until the onions are soft. Add the Bourbon. It will sizzle a little. Cook about 2-3 more minutes until the Bourbon cooks out.

Serve the ham with the pineapple sauce.

Splash in a little Bourbon to dress it up!

  1. I've never met a ham I didn't like. Your idea to add a splash of bourbon to the sauce sounds delicious. The cover of The Diva Spices It Up is simple but inviting. I've added it to my need to read list. robeader53(at)yahoo(dot)com

A whole pineapple?! Isn't that a lot of fruit?

  3. I used a whole one, but then I like pineapple. You could certainly use half of one!
