Super Bowl Burger #recipe + book #giveaway from author @DarylWoodGerber

From Daryl aka Avery:  It's just a few days until Super Bowl Sunday! Who will be watching? Do you watch for the commercials or the game or the half time show?

I love the commercials with the Clydesdales and the Dalmatian. I hope they do better this year. Last year's were sort of a bust, don't you think? But the commercials that have a message, the ones where you say, "Aww," afterward, are great!

Or how about the ones where you laugh out loud? Will anyone forget the young boy dressed as Darth Vader trying to use the force to start his parents' car? If you don't recall, the parents, from the kitchen, click on the car. The kid leaps in the air he is so shocked! It's hysterical!

However, no matter what,  on Super Bowl Sunday, I go for the food. Normally, I don't eat a lot of salty food.  But for Super Bowl, absolutely!  Nachos, chips, guacamole, wings. I'll even splurge and have a gluten-free beer.

And burgers. I love to barbecue, and though I know the country might be under snow, you can still do a great burger inside!

Today, I'm going to share an easy recipe for a cheddar cheese burger. Why with cheese?

Well, many of you know that I write the Cheese Shop Mysteries (as Avery James). Although there won't be any new books in the series (BIG SIGH), there are seven and I'm proud of them. So to celebrate the month that the Cheese Shop Mysteries used to come out - February - I'm offering a giveaway today. See below!

Cheddar Cheese Burger

(one serving)
6-8 ounces lean hamburger meat
1 ounce shredded Cheddar cheese (about ¼ cup)
1-2 teaspoons mixed herbs (I used basil, rosemary, thyme)
1-2 tablespoons chopped yellow onion (if desired)

Preheat the broiler.

In a medium bowl, mix the hamburger, cheese, herbs, and onions (if desired). On a chopping board, form the burger into a patty.

Set the burger on an oven-safe broil pan. Broil the burger to your liking. I like 3-4 minutes a side for medium rare; 5-6 minutes a side for medium.

Serve with a hearty red wine. A zinfandel will really match with the spicy flavors of the cheese without dominating.

I'm offering one commenter a choice of my Cheese Shop Mysteries. Just tell me what you enjoy about the Super Bowl. And if you don't watch it, that's okay. Tell me what you like about cheese!  Leave your email so I can contact you if you win. It can be a cryptic email. I'm a mystery author. I'll figure it out. I'll pick a winner before next week!

Savor the mystery!

  1. I like the new commercials! (Is that bad?) I'm not much of a sports fan.
    myrifraf (at) gmail (dot) com

    1. It's not bad. It's great marketing on their part to get people who like to watch them. :) ~ Daryl

  2. What I like about cheese = the versatility of it! So many flavors available; can make it sweet or savory; great addition to almost any meal, snack, recipe, etc.

  3. This looks yummy with the cheese inside of the burger too. A great different recipe for using cheese I'm going to try. I get tired of regular cheese burgers, thanks for the recipe.

  4. Whoops forgot email

  5. I am not a Super Bowl fan but the commercials are fun. Cheese....its so versatile and adds so much flavor to meat and vegetables. Who can resist a grilled cheese sandwich? dbahn(at)iw(dot)net

  6. Wow, this burger looks yummy, I can't wait to try it! I love the taste of cheese and how it melts into what ever you eat it with. My favorite part of the Super Bowl is the commercials ☺ Thank you for the chance to win one of your terrific books. kittygirl15401(at)yahoo(dot)com

    1. Jewel, you are more than welcome. Not all cheeses melt well; some are better than others. Those are the ones I like, too! Yum. ~ Daryl

  7. I'm not a football fan, however I do like the commercials & spending time with friends & family.

    1. I think that's the point. Spending time with family. Snacking together. :) ~ daryl

  8. I enjoy the game but really enjoy the commercials.

  10. To be quite honest I hate football. After 4 years of being in the High School Marching Band and slogging thru rain, mud, wind and snow to play for halftime I had enough. I always brought a book with me to the games to keep myself entertained.

I enjoy the commercials and switch channels every now and then to see if one is playing.

About the cheese. At the moment I have Fresh Mozzarella, Mozzarella stix, chedder, Monteray Jack and a couple more. We always have cheese in the house.

    1. Nora, I can't picture you in the marching band! But reading while in between, love it! ~ Daryl

  11. I don't watch football. Cheese is delightful especially when it is grilled cheese. elliotbencan(at)hotmail)com

  12. I hate football. Cheese is a popular snack in our house especially with the little ones who visit.saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com

  13. I can only eat aged extra sharp cheddars, and good brick cream cheese. Aged parmigiano and swiss are ok too. The SuperBowl is for commercials, family, friends, and food! Im sorry about the series ending. Please keep writing!!!!!

    1. Electa, thanks so much for your sweet thoughts. I will be continuing. I have a new series out in November! ~ Daryl

  14. I loved football when I could watch it with my father as a teen. My mother would buy big pretzels for us and find a project at the far side of the house so she could hear us yelling. We were major NY Giants fans with YA Tittle and Rosie Greer. (That's a hint at the time frame!)
    I don't watch any now.

If I want to see the commercials, I catch them online later and skip all the hoopla.

    1. ps The picture of the ready to be cooked burgers looks like they have chopped onion in them. Am I that right?

    2. Libby, I love you! Can I hire you as my editor? You catch everything. Yes, there are onions, and I added that into the recipe, thanks to your catch. Bad me! I love onions, but not everyone does. :) ~ Daryl

    3. Glad to help. This way you know people actually look carefully (obsessively?) at the postings!

  15. I check on the Super Bowl in walk by spurts. My nephew Grant's wife is a huge Patriot's fan, so I need to make sure to see how Mr. Tom is doing.
On the cheese, well I honestly say that I love all cheese. I spent the first four years visiting the modest factory next to our house where my father was the manager. My love for cheese began right from scratch with the curds.

    1. Marina, the curds. Have you ever had deep fried curds? I hear they are amazing. ~ Daryl

  16. I love all of the hoopla for the day as when we get home from church we turn on the TV and all day they have concerts and talking to the players etc..then before it starts then you are not only watching the game but then your glued to your seat as the commericals with the dogs driving the cars are just so funny and they are going to be part of the commercials they are showing . Most of the time we are off in the kitchen during the commercials and during the Super Bowl noone wants to leave their seat. I enjoy watching football also so even if my teams aren;t playing there is always a drama or so within the game. I would love a print copy.

  17. I don't watch football. Provalone cheese and Colby Jack are my favorite cheeses. norbert8bubba(at)yahoo(dot)com

  18. Well, I love everything about cheese and will miss the cheese shop mysteries. I enjoy some of the Super Bowl commercials but don't watch the game. Instead I find the commercials online later. Thanks for the giveaway.
