to win this week!

See details below...

Release day is always special for an author, and that's why we're celebrating. This is the official publication date for PIES AND PREJUDICE, the first installment in a charming new mystery series by our fellow crime-writing cook Ellery Adams!

Congratulations,
Ellery!

Pies and Prejudice:
Charmed Pie Shoppe Mystery

When the going gets tough, Ella Mae LaFaye bakes pies. After catching her husband cheating in New York, she heads back home to Havenwood, Georgia, where she can drown her sorrows in fresh fruit filling and flakey crust. But her pies aren't just delicious. They appear to have magical effects on the people who eat them.

Ella Mae soon makes her own wish come true by opening the Charmed Pie Shoppe. But with her old nemesis Loralyn Gaynor making trouble, and her old crush Hugh Dylan making nice, she has more than pie on her plate. Then Loralyn's fiancé is found dead--killed with Ella Mae's rolling pin--and it will take all her sweet magic to clear her name.

In the meantime, we hope you'll enjoy one
of Ellery's wonderful pie recipes, re-posted below. And, of course, we hope you'll go out this week and purchase Pies and Prejudice for your keeper shelf.

Ellery Adams' Low Fat
Apple Berry Tart

Ingredients:

3 medium apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced (I used Honeycrisp, but it’s also fun to mix up the apples and use one Golden Delicious and 2 Granny Smith, for example)
1 pint of fresh raspberries, rinsed
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoon lemon juice
8 sheets phyllo dough (14-inch by 9-inch sheets)
butter-flavored cooking spray
cinnamon for sprinkling

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Toss apples slices and raspberries in a medium bowl with sugar and lemon juice. Meanwhile, remove eight sheets of phyllo dough from the pack.

Lay the phyllo sheets on a clean work surface. Removing one sheet at a time and covering the remainder with plastic wrap or a damp paper towel, spray each sheet with butter-flavored cooking spray (I used Crisco spray), then lay sheet in a 9-inch pie dish, with the extra dough hanging over the edge. Repeat with remaining sheets, forming a circular pattern.

Add in the mixture of apple and raspberries, then bring up the sides of the dough and fold in, leaving a gap in the center. Spray with butter-flavored spray. Sprinkle cinnamon over the whole tart. Bake for 30 minutes, until the crust is golden brown.

Cheers, Ellery!
Enjoy your release week!

  5. My husband gave me a mold like that--only an apple--for my birthday. The nice thing is that it's both a cutter (one side) and a stuffer/crimper (the other side). It works! Pies for everyone!

  19. What an adorable mold! Pie making is a big thing for me and I have always loved it. Choosing a favorite pie is hard. However, I think I would say either cherry or peach. I never get those because my family always wants a granny smith apple pie.

I love the title! Pies and Prejudice! How cute is that? I'll bet the novel is a good one and I look forward to reading it!

  20. Happy release day! May your book sell like hotcakes (or pies, as the case may be)
My favorite pie is a baked crust but unbaked filling of wild Maine blueberries with a lemon, sugar, cornstarch glaze. Served with lightly sweetened whipped cream (the real stuff).
    Heaven on a fork!

  28. I thought of many favorite pies as I scrolled down to leave a comment - peach pie, that's my favorite, oh no, wait, it's lemon or maybe chocolate silk, yeah that's it but wait, there was that one I saw on the food channel - but really the most favorite is blackberrry cobbler, after I helped pick the berries. Sweet and juicy, can't be beat. Dye me purple and watch me smile!

  37. Happy Release Day, Ellery! I've been looking forward to this new series since you first mentioned it. The UPS man should be here any minute.

My favorite pie is a deep, dark chocolate meringue. The recipe came from my mother's Watkins Cookbook, and it has made every other chocolate pie taste pale, flat, and dull. I know--in honor of your new series release, I'll make one!

  57. Pies and Prejudice just looks so tasty :) I came across it the other day on another site and immediately had to wishlist it. Thank you for sharing today and making me smile with this awesome memory of a favorite pie. The pie is called BanBerry; it has an incredibly flaky sweet crust with a very light custard, layers of fresh bananas, then layers of fresh strawberries, then a light strawberry glaze, and a circle of whipped cream. Now that was heaven! Of course for the cute pocket pie cutter I can see everything from savory to fresh fruit - YUM!
