Hello from Key West, readers and eaters! I'm Hayley Snow, main character in the Key West food critic mystery series, wrestling away the spotlight from that wacky Lucy Burdette.
This time, it all started with a mango daiquiri. Or was it the Key West shrimp fritters with mango salsa? My detective hubby Nathan would tell me that in the middle of a big crime scene, the food that people were eating is not the point. (Understand that he’s not the kind of guy who lives to eat, but this time he could be right.) Either way, my boss at Key Zest magazine and I had come up with the bright idea to invite local celebrities on a sunset cruise—people from the foodie world, city leaders like our mayor, and local developers. I was assigned the job of light schmoozing, while our guests nibbled canapés and sipped tropical drinks. The whole affair had a mango theme, and my mother and stepfather had been selected to cater. (Nepotism much, Lucy??) Mom didn’t really know much about mangoes, coming from New Jersey, but she went with the flow and the food looked amazing. This event was going to be brilliant publicity for our ezine and, for my mother’s catering business. But, as so often seems to happen in my life, the party took a sharp turn—straight into murder.
Yes, The Mango Murders, the 15th book in the Key West food critic mystery series, is finally here. This time around, I find myself up to my eyeballs in tropical fruit, desperate secrets, and an explosion that turned a glamorous evening into a life-or-death mystery. There’s a tangled family history, an elusive killer, and a whole lot of sleuthing. Despite all this mayhem, we’d already planned the celebration of all celebrations for my dear friend Miss Gloria. She’s turning 85 and no one in her life wanted to miss this occasion, whether they got along or even liked our island. So everyone was coming! Tension? Yes! I could smell the rubber burning.
If I was in therapy—which I'm not because I have a good friend who’s a shrink and another who’s the smartest tarot card reader around—I might be asking myself why I take this much on. Or maybe the better question is why this Lucy Burdette person feels compelled to pile on the stress that ends up torturing us characters? Really, who does this to people? I'm going to investigate that.
If you’ve been following my adventures around the island—my food writing, my crime-solving, my love life (hi, Nathan!)—you know that life here is never boring. But this one? Let’s just say I’ll never look at a mango or a sunset cruise quite the same way again.
So grab your sunblock, pour yourself something tropical, and dive in.
P.S. On the bright side, I came away with a few excellent mango recipes. (And no serious injuries, though my nerves are another matter.) The book includes real recipes from my kitchen to yours. Mango scones, mango upside down cake, mango daiquiri, anyone?
P.P.S. If you enjoy the mystery, I’d love it if you’d leave a review or recommend it to a fellow book lover. It helps more than you know—and it might even keep me and my pals in more adventures.
Thanks for reading and sleuthing with me. See you on the next page!
With mango-sticky fingers and love,
Hayley Snow
Food critic, accidental detective, mango convert

Hooray! Now it's back to the bookstore for me.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say that I've turned into a more Nathan - like person lately. I eat to live. I was more Haley - like, but don't have people to cook for now, so I just eat because I'm hungry (or bored).
Congratulations, Haley, on surviving another one of Lucy's imposed adventures.
Deana (deanaedale@aol.com)
Ha Deana, it IS much easier when you have someone else cooking for you!

it's hard to be moderate kay, when great food is involved!
DeleteCongratulations on the book! Thank you for the chance to win. I am a eat to live type of person with occasional splurges in the live to eat sector (i.e. celebrations, vacations - especially to places I've never been -love to try the local cuisine, and cruising!) I have to be careful when cruising because the portions are so generous - so I try to balance with a lot of walking. madam hawk at gmail dot com
ReplyDeletecruising can be murder, LOL! all that good food all the time...
DeleteCongratulations on another book! I love to eat. I've been trying to eat healthier lately but yummy foods always beckon to me. ckmbeg (at) gmail (dot) com

ReplyDeletethanks Anita!
DeleteYour books always make me hungry!
ReplyDeletethanks Chris! I think...
DeleteCongratulations on your new release, Lucy! I'm one of those who live to eat... at least until I developed tons of food allergies later in life (thanks to oral allergy syndrome). So now I eat to live, but still think about food and recipes constantly. Fortunately, I have family to eat all the dishes I make but can't enjoy myself.
ReplyDeleteOh no Kim! I went through a 'hardly any salt' phase a couple years back. Not fun at all. My kind husband never complained but I know that food was not great.
DeleteI live to eat! And mango scones sound incredible
ReplyDeletethanks Elida!
DeleteI love all your book series - especially the Key West series. When I read them, it feels like I am taking a Key West vacation. I am like you - I am a foodie and I love to eat and try new foods!

grace dot koshida at gmail dot com
I know they would be in your hands, Grace!
DeleteMangos? Yes, please! They don't ripen till the summer in Hawai'i, and since I leave Hilo for Santa Cruz in the summer, I don't get to eat them as much as I'd like (though I do get my fill of papayas, a winter fruit!).
ReplyDeleteCongrats on this new book, dear Lucy/Roberta--it looks simply scrumptious!
thanks Leslie! Papayas don't do it for me the way mangoes do.
DeleteCongratulations on your new book, Lucy ; I look forward to reading it.
ReplyDeleteI love to try new foods and new recipes.

I’m like your Mom, growing up in NJ and only get the bags of cut up mango since I don’t know how to prepare them. Reading the book this coming week so hope for some tips plus another great story!
ReplyDeletethank you and enjoy!
DeleteI bounce between the two! I love to read recipes, but am loath to cook. patdupuy@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteSometimes reading recipes is all you need LOL
DeleteEat to live, cook for all
ReplyDeletegood for you!
DeleteDefinitely live to eat! Congratulations on your latest book! Lindaherold999(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeletethanks Linda!
DeleteI live to eat! I made the mango scones and the Upside down cake earlier in the season. I live in Miami and we had a bumper crop!
ReplyDeleteSo lucky Donnis, glad you enjoyed the recipes!
DeleteI usually eat to live but live to eat when I’m in a seafood heaven like Key West. Nothing like eating shrimp next to the boats they came in on. Yum.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about the shrimp!
DeleteLive to eat girl here. Unfortunately I hate to cook so a daily challenge. Looking forward to reading the new book!
ReplyDeletethank you and sorry about the cooking!
DeleteOh, I miss the Hayden mangoes we had when we lived in Hawai'i - we had a big tree that produced the most delicious mangoes! I love to eat, but as a diabetic I have to be careful. My husband loves to cook, but he also has health issues (mostly cardiac-related). We have found ways to still cook and enjoy all kinds of dishes from many different cuisines. Luckily, we both love vegetables. I love the Key West Food Critic series, and am looking forward to reading The Mango Murders! teenlibn(at)hotmail(dot)com.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you've found workarounds and can still eat well! thanks for the kind words...
DeleteWonderful spotlight, Lucy! Congratulations on The Mango Murders
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read this! I am somewhere in the middle of the eat-to-live or live-to-eat debate☺️
ReplyDeleteIt was so fun to hear from Hayley. I think I fall somewhere in between eat to live and live to eat. I like to look for a bakery to visit in my travels or visit a place that Guy Fieri has gone with Diners Drive-Ins and Dives. Mango Murders sounds like a wild ride. awanstromatyahoodotcom
