VMBURNS: It's cooling off in North Georgia and the kids are back in school here. That means summer is pretty much over. Yet, sometimes I'm not ready to let go. So, when I saw a watermelon drink on a menu, it absolutely screamed summer to me. First Watch is a chain restaurant, although I think it's mostly in the South. My sister was visiting, so we went for breakfast. I ordered a spiked Watermelon Wakeup, but they were out of watermelon. Imagine that! Anyway, once my mouth was ready for this delicious sounding beverage, I went on a mission to find out how to make it. I found several variations online. One person called it, SUMMER IN A GLASS! I agree! The basic ingredients were the same in all the recipes. Watermelon juice, pineapple juice, lime juice, and simple syrup. The variations came in the ratios. I'm really found of pineapple, so I increased the pineapple juice a smidege. You do you! :-) I tried it spiked and unspiked. Spiked included Vodka. You can blend everything together, but I blended separately so I could take pictures.
WATERMELON WAKEUP
- INGREDIENTS
- 20 oz Watermelon juice
- 8 oz. Pineapple juice
- 3 oz. Lime juicer
- 1 oz. Simple Syrup
- 1/2 oz. Vodka (optional)
- INSTRUCTIONS
- Cut up your fresh fruit into small pieces.
- Squeeze the juice from 2 limes.
- Juice or puree the fruit.
- Create the simple syrup by combining 1 cup sugar to 1 cup water. Boil until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is clear.
- Mix the simple syrup into the fruit juice and stir.
- Serve over ice and with a sprig of mint (if you have it).
- For the spiked version, add a 1/2 oz (or so) of Vodka and mix.
ICING ON THE MURDER
Influencer-turned-bakery-owner Maddy Montgomery has sold plenty of wedding cakes before, but before she turns one out for her and her fiancé’s wedding, she’ll have to solve a little case of murder . . .
Aunt Octavia would be so proud! Maddy has turned Baby Cakes Bakery—named for her 250-pound English Mastiff, Baby—into a runaway success, and she’s marrying the love of her life, veterinarian Michael Portman. #DreamWedding! Plus the timing couldn’t be better: the country’s biggest bridal expo has come to New Bison, Michigan, and Maddy has secured a spot for Baby Cakes to showcase their cakes. She’s also entered a contest for an all-expenses-paid wedding extravaganza offered by world-renowned wedding planner Serafina.
Unfortunately, supremely nasty Serafina truly takes the cake—she makes the worst bridezilla seem like a shy flower girl. But there’s one thing the wedding planner didn’t plan on—being impaled by one of the skewers Baby Cakes uses on their tiered wedding cakes.
While Maid of Honor Sheriff April Johnson rounds up suspects at the expo, Maddy and her aunt’s friends, the Baker Street Irregulars, and even Baby join forces to unveil a killer hiding in plain sight . . . before wedding bells start to chime.
Oooh, your recipe for Watermelon Wakeup sounds delicious! I'm pretty boring. I usually just drink a lot of water. Sometimes I will add lemon if I'm feeling fancy. 😊 I did make some homemade peach tea from peaches off my tree. It was so good.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the chance!

I love water with lemon and or limes. OMG! You have your own peaches! That's awesome, too.
DeleteI really like different sun teas in the summer. A favorite is fruity herbals mixed with a splash of lemonade. A good Arnold Palmer is hard to beat.
ReplyDeleteThis year I want to try homemade peach tea with fresh peaches from my tree. Thank you for the recipe and chance to win.

I love good flavored iced teas, too. Peach tea is a favorite.
DeleteI drink Iced tea with lemon or lemonade. Deborah deborahortega229@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI like both iced tea and lemonade. I'm really fond of strawberry lemonade. So good.
DeleteNow this sounds delicious, and refreshing in the summer heat.
ReplyDeleteMy husband blends ice and chunks of watermelon for drinks with various spirits, but he doesn't add anything extra. It's good, but a little blander than your recipe. I will urge him to try this.
We have several First Watch restaurants in Cincinnati, including one in my community. I'll have to remember this next time I'm there.
Awesome. I hope they aren't out of watermelon when you go.
DeleteYour Watermelon Wakeup looks so refreshing, Valerie! Summer is still on here in NYC -- it's hot and humid, which means cold drinks are most welcome. During the day, I go for sparkling water with slices of lemon and lime. But come cocktail hour, that Watermelon Wakeup looks like a relaxing end-of-summer cooler. Take care and big congrats on the publicaiton of your wonderful new Baker Street Mystery ICING ON THE MURDER!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I now keep limeade in the fridge, thanks to your air conditioning in a glass, recipe. It was delish@
DeleteStrangely enough, my favorite summer beverage is A & W zero sugar ice cream sundae soda. I just discovered it a couple of weeks ago, and it really does taste like an ice cream sundae! With none of the calories. Thanks for the recipe and Happy End of Summer! aut1063(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI used to love root beer floats with A&W root beer. This sounds awesome!
DeleteYour Watermelon Wakeup looks cool and refreshing! I adore watermelon. I love to read your books. My usual summer drink is a diet cola.

I love a diet coke with a lime.
DeleteValerie, this sounds like the perfect way to give leftover watermelon a second life before it goes bad. Plus, “summer in a glass” is hard to pass up! My favorite summer afternoon drink is a homemade New York egg cream. Maybe I’ll share the recipe one of these days.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites, too, Ang! The last time I had one was in about 1993, when I took my daughters and mother to NYC for Easter weekend. We were chatting with a waiter about it being their first time in the city, and I asked him if he knew where we could get an egg cream like the ones I enjoyed back in the 1970's. He scoured a Zagat's Guide with no results, and the chef ended up making one for us all the share. And it was perfect.
DeleteAng, I haven't heard of a New York Egg Cream, so I hope you do include it. And, yes, you are correct. It is perfect for taking care of the last bit of watermelon.
DeleteSummer In A Glass...who would not like it? I amalways drinking water, and occasionally drink flavored ZERO fizzy water, but after today, I am surprising my wonderful wife with this watermelon drink (her favorite fruit), and it will be a hit! Thank you for entertaining us so wonderfully through your addictive mysteries and delicious recipes, Valerie! I can't wait to catch up with Baby! JOY!!! Luis at Ole dot travel
ReplyDeleteOh that's so nice. I hope she likes it. Keep me posted.
DeleteI’m sending your recipe along to my watermelon loving daughter, who will be thrilled with another reason to buy more watermelon. 🍉 I had a cranberry-pineapple (diet) juice yesterday that I am now on the search for at our grocery store. So nice. I’m looking forward to exploring this series of books.

DeleteYour drink recipes always make me thirsty, VM! This sounds like another great addition to my file.
ReplyDeleteYAY! I love trying new drinks. So much fun.
DeleteYum! I'll have to try this. It reminds me of the strawberry slush we make, but with watermelon. I love a frozen strawberry daiquiri after a hot day at work or mowing the lawn.
ReplyDeletekozo8989 (at) hotmail (dot) com
I love strawberry Daquiri's too. They are so delicious, especially when its hot outside.
DeleteI like iced coffee.
ReplyDeleteWskwared(at)yahoo(dot)com
I like iced coffee too, but I can't drink them too late in the day or I won't be able to sleep. However, they are really refreshing.
DeleteI'm a big fan of iced tea and also an Arnold Palmer. My Sister was just here for a couple of weeks and we made a visit to the liquor store and picked up a bottle of Strawberry Rhubarb vodka and mixed it with Strawberry lemonade and it made a very refreshing cocktail to drink while relaxing in the evening.
ReplyDeletediannekc8(at)gmail(dot)com
I have never heard of strawberry rhubarb vodka, but now I'm curious. I may take a look for it the next time I'm at the liquor store. Thanks for the tip.
