MADDIE DAY here, delighted to host my good friend Ellen Byron today! I loved A Very Woodsy Murder, the first in her new Golden Motel Mysteries, and I know you will, too.
Today she brings you a yummy recipe and a special giveaway! Take it away, Ellen.
When I was mulling over events to celebrate A Very Woodsy Murder, the first book in my new Golden Motel Mysteries series, I landed on the idea of a giveaway featuring light mysteries set in the Golden State itself. The giveaway included Maddie's Murder Uncorked!
To make
the giveaway even more special, I decided that everyone who entered should
receive a thank-you gift from me in the form of recipe. The catch was that my
new series doesn’t fall into the culinary genre. While I do include two recipes
at the end of the book that tie into its theme, neither felt right for the
giveaway. So I brainstormed and came up with a “golden” treat: Salted Caramel Blondies.
They’re sort of a mashup of candy and a cookie bar. The sample batch I made was
a big hit with my test group of family members and needlepoint pals, but if you
prefer your treats a bit less sweet, just leave off the caramel topping.
The
California Dreamin’ Giveaway may be over but I can’t resist giving away one of
my Golden Motel bears to one lucky MLK reader who comments below.
SALTED CARAMEL BLONDIES
Blondie ingredients:
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 cup tightly packed dark
brown sugar
1 large egg, lightly
beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup your choice of
chips: white, butterscotch, chocolate. You can also add nuts.
Caramel topping ingredients:
1 cup granulated sugar
½ cup tap water
¼ cup heavy cream
2 tsp. vanilla
3 T. butter
1 tsp. ground coarse salt
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C):
Lightly butter and flour an 8x8-inch (20 cm x 20 cm) pan.
Whisk together the melted butter and sugar in a bowl. Add the egg and vanilla extract and whisk to combine.
Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt, and mix it all
together. Add the butterscotch chips or other mix-ins (up to 1 cup total).Pour
into the pan and spread evenly.
Bake for 18 to 25 minutes or until a tester inserted into the center
comes out clean. Allow to cool.
To make the caramel topping, Bring sugar and water to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Let cook until it’s golden brown and reaches 360 degrees on a candy thermometer.
Turn off heat and gradually whisk in heavy
cream, butter, and vanilla. Let the mixture cool for five minutes, then evenly
pour and spread over the blondies. Sprinkle with salt.
Makes 16 squares. Enjoy!

In A Very Woodsy Murder, new motel owner Dee Stern has checked out of the familiar comforts in the San Fernando Valley and checked in to the quaint village of Foundgold. Running a rustic getaway in the woods sure beats LA traffic—until murder ruins the peace and quiet. Nestled in the shadow of a national park, the mid-century motel filled with cobwebs and retro charm is a time capsule of a place that, like her, could use some work. So, in the most impulsive move of her life, Dee teams up with best friend, Jeff Cornetta—who happens to be her first ex-husband—to transform the aging ranch into the Golden Motel-of-the-Mountains, a hiker’s oasis on the edge of the wilderness . . .
But Dee and Jeff soon realize there couldn’t be two people more unprepared for the hospitality business. There’s also the panic-inducing reality of prowling bears and a general store as the only shopping spot for miles. Living and working in the middle of nowhere takes some getting used to—especially when a disrespectful guest ends up murdered! Now, with the motel duo topping the suspect list, Dee must steer clear of a meddling park ranger, face her past in show biz, and determine if the killer is a local or tourist. Because as she quickly finds out, there are many things worse than a one-star review.
Thank you for sharing the recipe. These look so delicious, I wanted to reach through the screen to grab one. :) I love the bear. Thank you for this chance. areewekidding(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteThe recipe is a keeper! Salted Caramel is so good. I have added to my "potluck" recipe file. (One I use when I need something for a "carry-in" which we have at church at least once a quarter)! I've not spent time in California so I don't have a favorite spot. Thank you for the chance to win the adorable bear. madam hawk at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteOh, that's great! Let me know how your church friends like it. :-)
DeleteThe recipe sounds so good! I will definitely make those Salted Caramel Blondies soon. I've never been to California so no favorite spot. Thank you for the chance!
ReplyDeletejarjm1980(at)hotmail(dot)com
You have to come sometime! It's a glorious state.
DeleteOh my! The recipe for SALTED CARAMEL BLONDIES sounds beyond delicious. I've already saved it to my Pinterest recipe file, which means I will be trying it very soon. Love that it's just the right size for hubby and i too. The 8x8 pans anything is always better than the larger 9x13 for us. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I lived in CA for 9 years as a child, I actually got to see very little of it. We lived at Fort Ord around the Monterey Bay area. Believe it or not, I never got to see the huge redwood trees. That will be corrected in just a few weeks. We are taking a bucket list trip and made sure seeing the trees were on our return trip route. :) Fondest memory was going to Santa Cruz one Sunday afternoon and driving through scenic 17-Mile Drive. Things I wish I had gotten to see are San Francisco, Hearst Castle and Disneyland.
As a child, when we had vacation, we went straight from CA back to the southern states to see relatives. Guess that's why as a senior adult, now retired and working on the bucket list, that I prefer trips where you can take detours or stop to see interesting things instead of just going from points A to B.

Kay, I'm so excited for you! It's a gorgeous area. You'll have a wonderful time. If you can, pay a visit to Columbia State Historic Park in Gold Rush Country. Or any of the old, preserved Gold Rush towns. They're wonderful.
DeleteThese look decadently delicious! As for California, I am a mountain girl at heart, so the Sierras call out to me. Have lived in the Bay area and now as an Arizona resident, I have spent time in both the San Diego and LA Basin areas, but while I love the amenities and the beaches, oh that traffic! Looking forward to reading your new series. Love the Vintage Cookbook series and ready for a return to NOLA! makennedyinaz@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteMarcia, thank you so much! That return to NOLA is coming in September with French Quarter Fright Night, where I've channeled some of my own experiences celebrating Halloween in that awesome city. And the Sierras are incredible. I LOVE them.
DeleteCongratulations on another book! The recipe sounds yummy and Bud is adorable. I love bears! ckmbeg (at) gmail (dot) com
ReplyDeleteThanks and good luck!
DeleteWelcome Ellen! Congratulations on the new series and thanks for sharing this recipe and giveaway! Those blondies look amazing.
ReplyDeleteThey're delish, especially if you like really sweet treats, lol. See you in B'con! xo
DeleteWelcome, Ellen, and congrats on the new series!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
DeleteThese blondies sound delicious. I've only been to California a couple of times-once to Disneyland and two cruise stops/starts in San Diego. I did love Old Town, though, and Balboa Park! Thanks for the chance to win that cutie. mickee at rogers dot com
ReplyDeleteWe were just in SD for the ALA convention. I've really come to love that area. Balboa Park is amazing!
DeleteOh, my, but do these look good, Ellen! Thanks--and congrats on the upcoming release of A VERY WOODSY MURDER--so looking forward to reading it! As for my favorite part of California, I think most of you know that it would have to be my own, beloved, Santa Cruz!
ReplyDeleteWell, of course it would, my friend! Someday maybe I'll get to visit you there. Or even better... in Hilo!
DeleteThat recipe looks delicious. I have your new book on hold at the the library and am looking forward to reading it.
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you so much for reserving it at the library! We authors LOVE libraries. xo
DeleteThe bear is adorable and the recipe looks great. I love caramel in brownies or blondies. One I'll try for sure.
ReplyDeletekozo8989(at)hotmail(dot)com
I hope you enjoy it! If it's too sweet, skip the top layer.
ReplyDeleteDelectable and yummy treat. California beaches beckon me. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI'm always so happy to discover new (to me) authors, so hello! A Very Woodsy Murder sounds like my kind of story! The Blondies look scrumptious, and even though I've always been intimidated about making caramel, I will give this a try (with semi-sweet chocolate chips). I've lived in CA for 68 years (West L.A., San Fernando Valley, and now Santa Clarita), but my favorite place is Morro Bay and the beautiful Central Coast. lgmiller831@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteLaurie, the Central Coast is my favorite place too! When my parents were alive and came to visit from NY, we'd go to Cambria every holiday season. And don't be intimidated here. This is a hard caramel, not a soft one.
DeleteLove your books! Looking forward to starting your new series and trying your recipe.

Dianne, thank you so much!
Deletei'm looking forward to the new series

LOL, fruit crumble is a favorite dessert of mine.
DeleteI can't wait to read your new book! Love the recipe, thanks for being here today! luvhistoricalromance(AT)gmail.com
ReplyDeletePenney, thank YOU!
DeleteOh yum! I love caramel. Back in '61 Dad was sent to California on a temporary assignment for 7 months. We went with him. Everything was so different. The cold Pacific as compared to the warm Gulf. The sequoias. Going to Big Bear Lake and to Lake Arrowhead. Death Valley. Yosemite. We tried to see as much as possible in that time! patdupuy@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteCalifornia must have been so different then. But still stunningly beautiful.
DeleteThey look delicious 😋 And the bear is adorable. sue.stoner72@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteHi Sue! And thanks!
DeleteThe recipe looks absolutely dee-lish!! My favorite place in California is the San Gorgonio Pass. I was born and spent my childhood there In the town Beaumont. I remember the freight trains traveling from the west (Riverside) to the east (Palms Springs/Indio) needing to have extra train engines to pull all the freight cars up and over the peak at the pass. There is a nearly two thousand feet rise in elevation, so extra power is needed.

I know exactly where you're talking about!!
DeleteHi all! My internet is out and Wordpress makes it almost impossible to reply via the phone. Apologies for not responding to your comments.
ReplyDeleteThe recipe sounds great, I've never been to California! tWarner419@aol.com
ReplyDeleteI hope you get to visit someday. It's an amazing state.
DeleteThank you for the yummy recipe. Sounds like one I need to make. I have never been to California. cherierj(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe. I wish I had some right now. I have lived in California most of my life. Twenty years in San Fernando Valley, more than that in San Diego area, then to Temecula for another 20. I am now in Nuevo, just a small town by Perris, CA. My favorite area is San Diego but too crowded and too expensive now.
ReplyDeletelkish77123 at gmail dot com
LOL, Linda re: having some right now. You've really lived all over SoCal. Jer and I went to transportation outdoor museum near Perris once on our anniversary. (We're a quirky couple!)
DeleteThose Salted Caramel Blondies look amazing! I would totally use butterscotch chips in it! I lived in Lodi, CA for a while, back in the 80s. It’s about 64 miles from beautiful Napa Valley! Thank you for this opportunity!
ReplyDeleteNancy Urtz
jnurtz@yahoo.com
Hi! I have lived in Lodi since 1985!!
DeleteOne of my best friends is from Lodi!
DeleteI lived there in 1986-87 with my grandma while I attended college in Stockton, CA. I loved Lodi, and I wouldn’t trade that time with my grandma for anything! Such special memories!
DeleteI graduated from Delta College and UOP!!
DeleteThe Salted Caramel Blondies seem similar to the Butterscotch brownies my mom made when I was a child. I loved them and these look every bit as delicious. I have been to the Bay Area a number of times because I have family in the area. I love San Francisco, San Diego, and La Jolla. I have spent a little time in LA, but not enough to see all the sights. And pertinent to your new book-I have been to Yosemite, but only for one day day. I would love to spend more time there sometime. I hope your book launch goes well on Tuesday!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Sue! And I think you're right about the comparison to the butterscotch brownies.
DeleteRecipe sounds so good, and no calories either...can't wait for new book.
ReplyDeleteLOL! Oh, how I wish these had no calories.
ReplyDeleteOh my stars! These sound wicked good!
