But she wanted us to eat well before we went to school. One of the things she fixed ahead of time for our breakfast was sloppy Joes. We were on our own for heating them up to eat at 5:30. They were delicious! Remembering that gave me the idea to re-create them for John and me.
Ingredients
1 pound high quality hamburger meat
One large onion
Three small or one large pepper
1/2 jar Bone-sucking or other favorite barbecue sauce
One can tomato sauce, 8 oz
Brown the beef and drain the grease and set this aside. Chop the onion and the peppers and sauté these until soft and beginning to brown. Add the meat back into the pan. Add the two sauces and simmer. Serve on soft rolls, toasted if you have the time, with a green salad or vegetable.
And then maybe grab a cupcake from Key West Cakes for dessert!

thank you!
DeleteI love the cover of the new book. Can't wait to read and I also enjoyed your memory. Memoirs are my second favourite genre.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words. I always think most of my memories are boring, and the ones that aren't, not sure I'd want to share LOL!
DeleteLove sloppy joes, but haven't had them in a while. Thanks for reminding me. Looking forward to reading the book & visiting Scotland with Hayley!
ReplyDeletethanks so much Charlene!
DeleteYes, one and all, the book is terrific!
ReplyDeleteYou had the sloppy Joes for breakfast? Not lunch when you got home early? Interesting.
My favorite lunch in school was spaghetti day. That was worth waiting in the really long line for, with hardly enough time left over to eat it. Our lunch periods were absurdly short.
I remember those short lunch periods too Libby! But this was definitely breakfast. And thanks so much for the kind words about the book!
DeleteI've never made these and I bet hubby would like them. Although around our house a "sloppy Joe" is a particular sandwich only available in a couple of delis in NJ and it has nothing to do with ground beef.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in NJ too, so I should know that. Was it like an Italian sub?
DeleteI love sloppy joe sandwiches! They are popular in NJ and my kids like them. Your new cover is fabulous!
ReplyDeletethanks Tina, I love this cover too!
DeleteSloppy Joes for breakfast??? How much fun is that! Thank you for this, Roberta. I love Sloppy Joes and never make them. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteI guess Mom was thinking just shovel some protein in the kids!
DeleteThese look and sound delicious! I must try this recipe. There is nothing like homemade. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeletethanks Robyn, I don't make them too often, but they are a treat when I do.
DeleteEveryone in my family all love Sloppy Joe's. I usually just buy a can of Sloppy Joe sauce and add it to hamburger meat, but your recipe sounds so easy I'll have to give it a try! Sloppy Joe's for breakfast sounds great to me!
ReplyDeleteLOL. I have to keep an eye on sodium, so ready-made food isn't usually the best choice.
