Peach Pie from @MaddieDayAuthor plus #giveaway

Maddie Day here, celebrating summer with a peach pie.

I grew up with two peach trees in my family's southern California back yard - one yellow peach and one white peach - and peaches are one of my favorite fruits. Or have been.

Alas, I have developed an allergy to raw peaches and other non-citrus tree fruits in the last couple of years. I know - it's dreadful, but true. Eating fresh peaches, cherries, apricots, even apples makes my mouth itch. And you don't want to mess around with early signs of food allergies. The last thing I need is anaphylactic shock.

But it's not being able to eat peaches that really hurts. I love biting into a ripe, sweet peach in August.

Still, I've discovered I can eat them cooked, so I've been sure to do some peach baking this summer.

Taken Too Soon, my alter-ego Edith Maxwell's sixth Quaker Midwife Mystery, comes out on September 8. It features Rose Carroll Dodge (for those who follow the series - yes, she and David Dodge finally were able to marry!) venturing south to Cape Cod to help solve the murder of her aunt Tilly's ward.

A peach pie is easily something cooks would have baked in 1889 when the peaches were ripe. So I present to you my recipe for peach pie!

Peach Pie

Ingredients

9 ripe peaches, peeled* and sliced, approximately 5 cups

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 cup granulated sugar, plus more for sprinkling

2 tablespoons cornstarch (not shown)

¼ cup unbleached white flour flour

2 unbaked pie crusts, either homemade or store bought (not shown)

¼ cup milk (not shown)

Directions

Preheat oven to 425.

*How to easily peel peaches:

Bring a pot of water to a boil. With a slotted spoon, gently lower in a few peaches.

Let sit one minute, then lift out onto a clean dishtowel. Repeat with the rest. When they are slightly cooled, the skins slide off.

Make the pie filling: Combine sliced peaches, lemon juice, sugar, flour, and cornstarch in a large bowl. Gently mix to combine and set aside.

Add the peaches to the bottom crust in a 9-inch pie plate.

Place the second crust on top of filling. Trim pastry, pinch bottom and top edges together and cut a few slits to allow steam to escape from the pie. Brush milk on the top, particularly around the edges, and sprinkle with a granulated sugar.

Bake the pie for 15 minutes on a rimmed baking sheet, then reduce heat to 375. Cook until peaches bubble and pastry is golden, approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

Delicious eaten warm with vanilla ice cream or enjoyed at room temperature any time.

Readers: What's your favorite summer fruit? Your favorite pie?

I'll give one commenter an ebook of Taken Too Soon, the sixth Quaker Midwife mystery, after it releases on the 8th.

Following on its coattails is Candy Slain Murder, the eighth Country Store mystery - also up for preorder and releasing on September 29. You guessed it, the story takes place at Christmas, with Robbie Jordan back in South Lick, Indiana. She digs into the mysterious skeleton of a woman who went missing a decade earlier, and then the woman's twin's murder nearly right in front of Robbie's eyes.

Isn't that a fun cover! You'll be hearing more here about the recipes in the back.

  4. My Dad was stationed in California for nine years of my growing up years. Didn't realize how fortunate we were to have easy access to fresh fruit and veggies until he retired and we moved back to Arkansas.

Being a good old southern gal, I love watermelon and it's the first fruit that comes to mind when you mention summer. However, I love all of them and look for all the fresh fruits as they come into season. Blackberries always make me think of my Dad since they were his favorite. He depended on my to face the possible snacks to get him a fresh cobbler each year. Loved going to the orchards and picking the just right peaches and apples coming home to enjoy them just about every way possible.

Like you, I think there is nothing better than a fresh peach right off the tree or a peach pie. Love a flaky crust peach pie! We also make what is called Peach Delight. It's a nut crust, a cream cheese mixture layer, topped with fresh peaches and then covered with a peach jello mixture. Yummy too!

Can't wait to read a paperback copy of "Taken Too Soon" and to read more about Rose and David's adventures. I'm no good at ebooks so I'll pass on the giveaway. I'd rather someone win it that can read it.

  5. That's a lovely pie! You are right to be cautious of food allergies, and pushing the boundaries removes the margin of safety in case of accidental ingestion. I young friend on my first cruise had tested his seafood allergy, decided to refrain from further, but none of us knew the Cuban soup had tiny shrimp. I seldom share my prescription meds, but I handed over my allergy pill to his mother. He's fine.
Smart of you to figure out that cooked is safe . . . also a good trick for under-ripe fruit. I'm quite looking forward to the next Midwife -- my favorite of your series. Hugs <3

  9. Isn't it awful how foods you've always loved suddenly don't love you? I could understand having to give up Hormel chili or something, but peaches just isn't fair! I love all fruit pies, especially peach and strawberry-rhubarb. I buy peaches and strawberries all throughout the season. Love both of those covers. Thanks for the giveaway.

  23. My stepmom makes me a peach pie for my birthday every year...it's delicious.

My daughter starting getting and itchy mouth and swollen lips after eating certain fresh fruits and vegetables. The allergy doctor tested her and she has oral allergy syndrome. It is about being allergic to the trees and pollination. We were told it works never be more than it is now...it will never be anaphylactic. Cooking the fruits and vegetables changes the "make up" of the fruit and veg and you no longer have the problem. She takes an allergy pill and is fine. Might be something to check in to.
