SHREDDING THE EVIDENCE is out! Plus book #giveaway from author @DarylWoodGerber

From Daryl:

I can't believe it, but SHREDDING THE EVIDENCE, the 9th in the Cookbook Nook Mysteries came out yesterday! Eek!  9 books. I know Cleo and Krista and tons of other authors have hit the 10 or 20+ in a series, but getting to 9 is a big deal to me.

So I'm giving away a copy today. Not an ARC. A real copy of the book, trade paperback OR e-book. Please leave a comment below and tell a friend.

What's it about? Well, it still stars Jenna Hart, owner of the Cookbook Nook culinary bookshop.  And it's still set in Crystal Cove, a fictional oceanside community on the coast of California. Jenna's aunt Vera is dating Deputy Appleby. Bailey just had an adorable baby, Brianna, who is now 7 months old. And there's something new in the works for Chief Cinnamon Pritchett.

Plus it's Food Bowl week!
The denizens of Crystal Cove are salivating over the upcoming Food Bowl Week, when local chefs offer some of their best and most imaginative creations in bite-size portions all over town. Bookstore proprietor Jenna Hart is hungry to sample as many of the delicacies as she can, but when she stumbles onto the dead body of a local food reporter and learns that her best friend’s husband is the primary suspect, she’ll have to summon the appetite for a side dish of sleuthing to prove his innocence.

Thanks to the title, I decided to feature all sorts of "shredded" recipes in the book. Shredded grilled cheese sandwich, bird's nest salad, and these little beauties, Coconut Haystacks. They are so easy and so tasty.  Enjoy!

Coconut haystacks

(Yield: 18-24 cookies)

5 ½ cups sweetened flaked coconut
1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
2  teaspoons vanilla extract

Heat oven to 325 degrees F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Spray the paper with nonstick cooking spray.

In a medium bowl, combine the coconut, sweetened condensed milk, and the vanilla extract. Blend well.

Using a cooking scoop or a teaspoon, drop mounds (about 1 tablespoon each) of the coconut mixture onto the parchment paper. Leave about an inch between them.

Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, until lightly browned. Remove from the oven and set the cookies on a rack to cool.

Chocolate Version:

If desired, you can dip the cookies “foot” or base, after baking, in melted chocolate. To do so, melt 1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips with 2 teaspoons of butter.  Dip the cookies in and set on parchment paper to cool.

OR . . . you could drizzle the melted chocolate over the tops of the haystacks.

Have fun.

  4. Actually, it depends on the book and what I'm reading at the time. If it's part of a series and/or a book I've been waiting for, then yes! Otherwise, if it catches my interest, it gets added to my tbr list and is read when I'm looking for that specific story.

  9. Generally. I buy when I can. If it's a series I really like I will often pre-order if I learn of it before hand. And congrats on the release of the book. Looking forward to it. And to trying this recipe. Don't have any chocolate chips on hand. But I wonder how this would be with butterscotch bottoms. bessdeepotter84 at gmail dot com

  11. i usually try to read a book when it first comes out. but it depends on if/when my library has it and how many other people have reserved it. i had several print holds before the libraries closed and now am further down on the e-book hold list. unpatiently waiting. wskwared at yahoo dot com

  12. My mom used to make these cookies. They look easy enough that I could make them! I like to buy a book when it first comes out. Sometimes, even though I buy the book, I’ll wait for a while to read it, because I know it will be a while until the next book in the series comes out. cking78503(at)aol(dot)com

  13. My mom used to make these cookies. I'd forgotten all about them. Next time hubby goes to the store I will have him get the ingredients and I will make some.
And I'm intrigued by the 'shredded grilled cheese sandwich.' We do such plain grilled cheese - buttered bread, Kraft singles cheese slices, maybe a slice of ham if we have some.

I am not always able to purchase a book when it first comes out. If the new book is part of a series I especially like, and I know about a new release, I might pre-order. And when I can I do like to read in order. But generally I will read whenever I get a book, and not worry about release dates.

  17. As you well know. I usually have new title release dates up to a year before release... My current new title list has books slated for January of 2021. If I have the cash on hand when a book is released AND it's by an author I collect, I jump online and order it.

  38. Of course it is optimal to read a book as soon as possible after the release date. The only time I truly pay attention to book release dates is when I have a stack of an author's books in a series. In that case I read the books in order of release date.

  39. I have a list of all the books I want to read and their release dates so I can get them when they come out or shortly after. I may or may not get it read right away depending on how many I have in my TBR pile.
