From Daryl:
I can't believe it, but SHREDDING THE EVIDENCE, the 9th in the Cookbook Nook Mysteries came out yesterday! Eek! 9 books. I know Cleo and Krista and tons of other authors have hit the 10 or 20+ in a series, but getting to 9 is a big deal to me.
So I'm giving away a copy today. Not an ARC. A real copy of the book, trade paperback OR e-book. Please leave a comment below and tell a friend.
What's it about? Well, it still stars Jenna Hart, owner of the Cookbook Nook culinary bookshop. And it's still set in Crystal Cove, a fictional oceanside community on the coast of California. Jenna's aunt Vera is dating Deputy Appleby. Bailey just had an adorable baby, Brianna, who is now 7 months old. And there's something new in the works for Chief Cinnamon Pritchett.
Plus it's Food Bowl week!
The denizens of Crystal Cove are salivating over the upcoming Food Bowl Week, when local chefs offer some of their best and most imaginative creations in bite-size portions all over town. Bookstore proprietor Jenna Hart is hungry to sample as many of the delicacies as she can, but when she stumbles onto the dead body of a local food reporter and learns that her best friend’s husband is the primary suspect, she’ll have to summon the appetite for a side dish of sleuthing to prove his innocence.
Thanks to the title, I decided to feature all sorts of "shredded" recipes in the book. Shredded grilled cheese sandwich, bird's nest salad, and these little beauties, Coconut Haystacks. They are so easy and so tasty. Enjoy!
Coconut haystacks
(Yield: 18-24 cookies)
5 ½ cups sweetened flaked coconut
1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
extract
Heat oven to 325 degrees F. Line baking sheets with
parchment paper. Spray the paper with nonstick cooking spray.
In a medium bowl, combine the coconut, sweetened condensed
milk, and the vanilla extract. Blend well.
Using a cooking scoop or a teaspoon, drop mounds (about 1
tablespoon each) of the coconut mixture onto the parchment paper. Leave about
an inch between them.
Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes, until lightly browned.
Remove from the oven and set the cookies on a rack to cool.
Chocolate Version:
If desired, you can dip the cookies “foot” or base, after
baking, in melted chocolate. To do so, melt 1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips
with 2 teaspoons of butter. Dip the
cookies in and set on parchment paper to cool.
OR . . . you could drizzle the melted chocolate over the
tops of the haystacks.
Have fun.

Enjoy! ~ Daryl
DeleteI normally like to read when it first comes out. Some I wait till later or I read from the library. suefoster109 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteSue, I hope your library is doing okay. Hopefully they will really embrace e-books at this time, right? ~ Daryl
DeleteI would love to read a new book as soon as it comes out, but I am a library patron and am usually way down on the reserve list!!!
ReplyDeletesharonquilts@yahoodotcom
Sharon, so you have learned patience! LOL ~ Daryl
DeleteActually, it depends on the book and what I'm reading at the time. If it's part of a series and/or a book I've been waiting for, then yes! Otherwise, if it catches my interest, it gets added to my tbr list and is read when I'm looking for that specific story.
ReplyDeleteangelsusan77(at)gmail(dotcom)
Susan, my TBR pile is growing again. And I'm reading. So many books... LOL ~ Daryl
DeleteI usually pay attention to the release date. If my finances are ok I go to the bookstore to get it or order it on line. Love this series.
ReplyDeleteLois, what is your bookstore? Is it doing curbside sales? ~ Daryl
DeleteIt doesn't matter to me when I read them as long as I get to read them. I really enjoy this series and am looking forward to this new book. Thanks for the chance to win one. ckmbeg (at) gmail (dot) com
ReplyDeleteRiley, I'm with you. I just want to be able to read it. But I do like getting a book when it's fresh off the presses. :) ~ Daryl
DeleteI like to read series books when they first come out so I don’t get behind but I will read a book whenever I can get it.
ReplyDeletesgiden at verizon(.)net
Sandy, I know some readers like to wait until there are a couple in a series out so they can binge-read. ~ Daryl
DeleteIf it's a series I'm already a fan of, I pay attention to the release date. If it's a series I've just discovered, then I like to read them all in order, no matter the release date. Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeletevalleyreader(at)gmail(dot)com
Darcy, you and I are on the same page. ~ Daryl
DeleteGenerally. I buy when I can. If it's a series I really like I will often pre-order if I learn of it before hand. And congrats on the release of the book. Looking forward to it. And to trying this recipe. Don't have any chocolate chips on hand. But I wonder how this would be with butterscotch bottoms. bessdeepotter84 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteDee, I would love these with butterscotch and you inspired me because I DO have butterscotch chips in my cupboard! ~ Daryl
DeleteI buy when I'm able so sometimes yes and sometimes no lol.
ReplyDeletei usually try to read a book when it first comes out. but it depends on if/when my library has it and how many other people have reserved it. i had several print holds before the libraries closed and now am further down on the e-book hold list. unpatiently waiting. wskwared at yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteTotally get it. ~ Daryl
DeleteMy mom used to make these cookies. They look easy enough that I could make them! I like to buy a book when it first comes out. Sometimes, even though I buy the book, I’ll wait for a while to read it, because I know it will be a while until the next book in the series comes out. cking78503(at)aol(dot)com
ReplyDeleteChris, these are SO easy! ~ Daryl
DeleteMy mom used to make these cookies. I'd forgotten all about them. Next time hubby goes to the store I will have him get the ingredients and I will make some.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm intrigued by the 'shredded grilled cheese sandwich.' We do such plain grilled cheese - buttered bread, Kraft singles cheese slices, maybe a slice of ham if we have some.
I am not always able to purchase a book when it first comes out. If the new book is part of a series I especially like, and I know about a new release, I might pre-order. And when I can I do like to read in order. But generally I will read whenever I get a book, and not worry about release dates.

I try to read books as close to release as possible. Sometimes access is a problem so it may take a bit before I can read them. bmedrano34@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI love coconut. Thanks for the recipe! And I would love to read this book!
ReplyDeleteLisacobblestone(at)aol(dot)com
Sounds very good love the recipe I'll have to try them. I always pay attention to release dates.
ReplyDeleteThanks

As you well know. I usually have new title release dates up to a year before release... My current new title list has books slated for January of 2021. If I have the cash on hand when a book is released AND it's by an author I collect, I jump online and order it.
ReplyDeleteNoraAdrienne (at) gmail (dot) com
NoraAdrienne, you are the best! ~ Daryl
DeleteThis town does not have a book store so I'm thrilled to get a new book to read, regardless of when it came out. dbahn(at)iw(dot)net I would prefer a print copy if I am the lucky winner!
ReplyDeleteI keep track of release dates -- and make sure my library does as well. I purchase some books and ebooks; others I take out from the library. cheers (at) MarjimManor (dot) com
ReplyDeleteI pay attention to publish dates and love to read when books first come out. Love this recipe! Thanks for a chance to win! ljbonkoski@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteLori, thanks for chiming in. ~ Daryl
DeleteI actually keep up with release dates, I have a small notebook in my purse that has a list of authors and books I look for and a list of releases that I look for.
ReplyDeleteA notebook? Wow, you are good. ~ Daryl
DeleteI try to pay attention to release dates. Thanks for the chance. im2early4u(at)Gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes out if possible. Josteioff@gmailDOTcom
ReplyDeleteI do keep up with release dates, however I usually get behind. So many great books I want to read come out around the same time. A wonderful problem to have.
ReplyDeleteturtle6422 at gmail dot com
I like to read new releases when they are first released. I pre-order books, so I do pay attention to release dates. Looking forward to reading "Shredding the Evidence" and making those coconut haystack.
ReplyDeletediannekc8(at)gmail(dot)com
Thanks, Dianne. I hope you enjoy both. ~ Daryl
DeleteI try to read books by my favorite authors as soon as they are available.
ReplyDeletelibbydodd at comcast dot net
Nice to know, Libby. ~ Daryl
DeleteI usually wait a bit to get a new release as I get most of my books from the library. Love those coconut haystacks, especially with chocolate. Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeletelhallson@shaw.ca
As a librarian, I do pay attention to release dates, even if I personally can't purchase a book right away. Sometimes I use them to place holds on my public library's copies. I try to purchase every book in this series, it's so good. teenlibn(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteLibraryKat, nice to hear. We love our libraries and wish you well during this trying time. ~ Daryl
DeleteI love the setting for this book in a small town with family involved and the haystack recipe sounds amazing I'm going to try it
ReplyDeletesbmooney@yahoo.com
DeleteThanks, Sarah. I hope you enjoy the read. ~ Daryl
DeleteI do pay attention to book release dates. If I am caught up in reading the books in a series, then I like to read the book as soon as possible (been waiting usually a year). Otherwise, the new book may languish in the ever-growing TBR mountain.
ReplyDeletegrace dot koshida at gmail dot com
I've never made these cookies(?) before but they look delicious! I do pay attention to release dates! I worked at a library for 14 years so I made sure I was top on the list and if I wasn't, I'd go pick up the book from a local store. Thank you for all the upcoming releases!!
ReplyDeleteSbandjz AT yahoo.com
DeleteUsually, I am on top of release dates - I love keeping up with my favorites! teabird17 ^^at^^ yahoo ^^ dot ^^ com
ReplyDeleteI liked haystacks when I was a kid. I think I would still eat them if served. LOL I love getting books, and there are a few authors where I would buy their new books as soon after they are published if I can. I can't afford to do that for all authors. I will wait on some and buy when I can. bluedawn95864 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteSometimes I pay attention to release dates but, if a book catches my eye, it doesn't matter how old it is. I will read it anyway.
ReplyDeletelkish77123 at gmail dot com
Linda, you are like so many others. I might find a treasure and realize it was written years ago, but then I want more by that author. ~ Daryl
DeleteHonestly I don't pay that much attention to release dates, I just read what I enjoy when I get a chance. shawn113(at)hotmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI like to read books by favorite authors and series when released.
ReplyDeletejtcgc at yahoo dot com
Yes, I enjoy reading books when they come out! Always enjoy your books! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeletefaithdcreech at gmail dot com
Of course it is optimal to read a book as soon as possible after the release date. The only time I truly pay attention to book release dates is when I have a stack of an author's books in a series. In that case I read the books in order of release date.
ReplyDeleteNancy
allibrary (at) aol (dot) com
I have a list of all the books I want to read and their release dates so I can get them when they come out or shortly after. I may or may not get it read right away depending on how many I have in my TBR pile. If it's a series, I usually like to re-read the previous books before the new one releases but sometimes my backlog doesn't allow it.
ReplyDeletekozo8989(at)hotmail(dot)com
If it is in a series that I am reading then yes when it releases. Otherwise it depends on what I've heard or if I think it is something that I will enjoy! tWarner419@aol.com
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your newest release. Ohh thank you for this very simple but yummy looking recipe. Have to give these a try. I guess I dont really pay too much attention to the release dates, unless it is an author/series that I love. I would love to try one of your books.

Lori, glad you liked it. ;) ~ Daryl
Deletei like to read books in order.thanks for the great recipe. love the cover...................lunalola5151@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteCongratulations happy reading
DeleteSometimes I specifically look for a release date other times not so much. But I have gotten better about adding to my wishlist so books come up easier. Sometimes I read so many books it’s hard to keep track of new books. Thank you for the opportunity! Tskoffice18@gmail.com
