BARBARA ROSS: Thanks for having me back on
Mystery Lovers Kitchen, Lucy! To celebrate the release of Sealed Off, the eighth book in the Maine Clambake Mystery series, I’m giving away
a copy to one lucky commenter below.
In Sealed Off the abandoned mansion on the island where the Snowden family runs its
authentic Maine clambakes is undergoing a major renovation. The demo crew
discovers a sealed off room, left perfectly intact from the late 1800s. What
happened to the person whose effects remain in the room? A diary promises to
tell the story. The Snowden family and friends gather over a series of family
dinners to read the tale.
Fee Snugg, the Snowden’s
neighbor, makes the halibut pizzaiola in the book. She and some of the other
characters have gotten into quite a little cooking competition, and all the
Snowden clan are the beneficiaries.
Pizzaiola is a type of
preparation of meat or fish that includes red sauce, garlic, olive oil, and
oregano. It means literally “in the style of a pizza maker.”
Ingredients
3 Tablespoons olive oil
1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
2 anchovy filets, chopped (optional)
1 large clove garlic, chopped
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 28-ounce can ground peeled tomatoes
2 6-ounce filets halibut
Instructions
Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a sauté pan over
high heat. Sear the halibut filets one minute on each side. Remove from pan and
set aside.
Turn the burner to medium, and using the same pan, add
the remaining olive oil and red pepper flakes, if using. Add the anchovy, if
using, and stir, crushing, with a wooden spoon until the anchovy melts into the
oil. Add the garlic and oregano and stir together for two minutes. Add the
tomato, season with salt and pepper, and bring to a boil. Simmer for 15
minutes.
Add the halibut and cook for 8-10 minutes.
Plate the halibut spooning some of the sauce over the top.

About Sealed Off
Early October is “winding
down” time in Busman’s Harbor, Maine, but there’s nothing relaxing about it for
Julia Snowden. Between busloads of weekend leaf peepers at the Snowden Family
Clambake and a gut renovation of the old mansion on Morrow Island, she’s
keeping it all together with a potentially volatile skeleton crew—until one of
them turns up dead under the firewood.
When the Russian demo team clearing out the mansion discovers a room that’s been sealed off for decades, Julia’s baffled as to its purpose and what secrets it might have held. Tensions are already simmering with the crew, but when one of the workers is found murdered, things come to a boil. With the discovery of another body—and a mysterious diary with Cyrillic text in the hidden room—the pressure’s on Julia to dig up a real killer fast. But she’ll have to sort through a pile of suspects, including ex-spouses, a spurned lover, and a recently released prisoner, to fish out one clammed-up killer.

The lighthouse and ocean scene would have me picking this book up even if I didn't know the wonderful author. It reminds me of our fabulous trip up the Maine coastline visiting all the lighthouses along the way. Fun time and great memories.

I just love the Clambake series. The old family mansion on the island has always intrigued me. It will be great to read about its secrets. The recipe sounds like one ?I should try. Living in a landlocked area, far from any ocean, any fish I cook is usually frozen. I find recipes that have a good sauce in them seem to be best for me to enjoy cooking and eating frozen fish.
