Thanks for having me back on Mystery Lovers’ kitchen! I’m delighted to have a new series debuting with Murder on Cape Cod set in a fictional town on scenic coastal Cape in the southeast corner of Massachusetts. It’s been so fun to invent bike shop owner Mackenzie Almeida, her world, and the cast of regular characters, which includes her parents, brother, and little niece, plus many of the shopkeepers and the head librarian in Westham.

Mac is a neat freak bordering on obsessive, but hey, she lives in a tiny house (with her African gray parrot Belle) and she repairs bicycles, which have lots of tiny parts to keep track of.  She doesn’t cook to speak of, but her hunky baker boyfriend Tim sure does. He whips up these tasty easy scallops in a few minutes after they return home from rescuing Mac’s brother from a nasty actual fall as well as a fall off the wagon. Enjoy!

Tim's Seared Scallops

Ingredients
1 pound large sea scallops
Salt and pepper
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon butter
1 clove garlic, pressed
Juice of half a lemon
1/2 cup dry white wine
2 Tbsp. fresh dill, minced (I somehow arrived home from the market without the fresh dill, so I took these pictures with a sprig of fresh rosemary, but ended up using dried dill in the dish)

Directions
Pat scallops dry with paper towels. Season one side with salt and pepper.
Heat oil and butter in wide skillet on medium-high heat until butter foams. Lay scallops seasoned-side down in skillet and let sear without touching for two minutes. Turn and add the garlic. Cook another minute and a half. Sprinkle with lemon juice and remove to a warm platter. Add wine and de-glaze the pan until the sauce thickens. Spoon over scallops with a sprinkle of dill. Serve on a bed of buttered pasta, over rice, or next to buttered, herbed potatoes.

What's the book about?

Summer is busy season for Mackenzie “Mac” Almeida’s bicycle shop, nestled in the seaside hamlet of Westham, Massachusetts. She’s expecting an influx of tourists at Mac’s Bikes; instead she discovers the body of Jake Lacey, and her brother soon becomes a suspect. Mac’s only experience with murder investigations is limited to the cozy mysteries she reads with her local book group, the Cozy Capers. To clear her brother’s name, Mac has to summon help from her book group co-investigators. For a small town, Westham is teeming with possible killers, and this is one mystery where Mac is hoping for anything but a surprise ending.

 GIVEAWAY
The book releases December 18 in a paperback exclusive from Barnes and Noble. It will re-release a year later in all formats on all platforms. This is an experimental deal between Barnes and Noble and Kensington and none of us is quite sure how it will fly. In the meantime, I’d love to give away a signed copy to one commenter here today. Tell me do you like to ride a bike, or what's your favorite thing to do on vacation?  Leave your email so I can contact you if you win. (Click on the COMMENT button below).

  4. I am so excited about this new series! Owning a bike shop sounds fun, of course without the dead body! I like the lineup of characters the series will have, especially the librarian and the book club.
I haven't ridden a bike in a very long time. I really do enjoy it. The whole sense of freedom you feel when you ride one is exhilarating!

  6. I haven't ridden a bike since I was in grade school. Navigating traffic always scared me since I felt so unprotected. When I am on vacation, I love trying new foods or local dishes, wandering the town or the hiking trails, and relaxing with a book in hand and a pot tea beside me.

I have never attempted to cook scallops. I think I am scarred from watching too much Hell's Kitchen.

  16. I used to ride my bicycle all over the city and visit friends, go to the library, the pool and enjoy the sunshine and summer. That was then. Now I walk everywhere since riding a bike gives me vertigo. I enjoy visiting new places and a beach for a quiet vacation or a historic town for an interesting change. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com

  17. Riding a bike was wonderful when I was young and life was simple and free. We would ride bikes all day long and explore. The kids had a real life of fun. Now I do not ride a bike since traffic and health problems interfere. When I am on a vacation I love seeing new sights and learning about them. It makes my life fuller and fun. elliotbencan(at)hotmail(dot)com

  19. I haven't been on a bike since the late 80's down in Colonial Williamsburg. Over the last 30 or so years we've spent many wonderful vacations on the Cape and one day I'd love to own a year round vacation home there. I love your writing and would be honored to add this title to my my home library (2300 and growing).

  27. Can't ride a bike anymore. So we love to go to the Grotto and walk the tree lined paths. Or go to the Rose Gardens. Or the Japanese Gardens. In the summer we camp. Talk about timing. I got home an hour ago from Safeway. With 2 pounds of large bay scallops. Though I'd hit the 'puter for an hour before finding a recipe for them. I'll be doing this one. Without the dill. Thanks for the recipe. And a chance to win what looks to be a great read. deepotter at peoplepc dot com

  28. Can't wait for the opportunity to read "Murder on Cape Cod"!

Now you done went and made me slobber all over my computer. We love scallops but living so far in from water they are a very expensive luxury that we don't get to eat near as often as I would like. Tim's Seared Scallops sound to die for.

When we go on vacation we love to go to places we have never been and see new sights. Hubby and I are both into photography which sounds like an easy thing. Actually, it can give you quite the workout getting to where the best shot is, lack of sleep cause you know the best light is right at dawn or as the sun sets. Last year we had a very memorable trip to Yellowstone and we are beginning to plan next years adventure. First thing on the list are good walking shoes, insect repellent and lots of camera cards.

Thank you for the wonderful change to win a copy of "Murder on Cape Cod". <3

  49. Congratulations on this series and release, Edith. I have lived in MA for 56 years and we had a home at the Cape for about 15 years. We love the Cape so I'm really anxious to reading this story. I haven't ridden a bike since my teen years and could now due to bisabilitues but I do like to ride my mobility scooter in any place that is handicapped accessible. My life is my family, specifically my husband, and our daughter and son in law and our three grandchildren. We go on many trips with them and we try to do everything as long as I can use my kind of wheels! 😃.

Our new activity added recently to our list is going to the Locked Room Adventures where you solve the mystery within an hour's time. It's so much fun and I bet mystery writers would love to do these. (And especially fun with grandkids as you can see how much they really do know and how well they can do with puzzles. Thank you for the chance to win your wonderful book. My fingers are crossed. (Mostly from arthritis 😃 but very hopeful!)

    Sincerely
    Cynthia.
