If you’re serving spirits for the holidays, Jack Shepard will be right over. (For those of you familiar with our Haunted Bookshop Mysteries, that shouldn't be a problem!) For everyone else, we hope these easy recipe ideas will lift your own spirits and bring you good cheer.

A Beautiful Layered Holiday Drink
Cleo Coyle's Chilly, Creamy
Eggnog Latte Cocktail
Chilled Eggnog (how much? see directions)
Chilled Kahlua (or your favorite coffee liqueur)
Cold Whipped Cream
Ground Nutmeg and Cinnamon Stick
(1) Start with a nice presentation glass. A stemless snifter, stemless wine glass, or clear tumbler will work nicely. Pour in a few fingers of Kahlua (or your favorite coffee liqueur), enough to give you a thick visual layer.
(2) Tilt the glass and position the spout of the eggnog carton against the rim, as shown below. If using homemade eggnog, place it in a container with a spout, such as a glass measuring cup. Pour in the eggnog slowly. Use the side of the glass to slow the pour even more and prevent it from mixing with the Kahlua.
(3) Finish with a festive shot of whipped cream, a sprinkling of ground nutmeg, and a cinnamon stick.

Ingredients:
2 ounces Baileys Irish Cream*
6 ounces freshly-brewed hot joe
1 ounce Irish whiskey
Whipped Cream
Directions: Combine Baileys, coffee, whiskey, top with whipped cream and enjoy.

To me sharing the bounty of my kitchen brings great cheer. I remember so fondly my time in the kitchen with my Mom as she would bake up all the special goodies from candy, cookies to cinnamon rolls to share with loved ones. We would box up an assortment of goodies in several boxes and then take off to deliver them. Honestly don't know if it was the goodies or the visit that they enjoyed the most. Seems as if folks back then spent more time one on one with folks.
ReplyDeleteI learned that sharing my baked goods AND spending time with them as I delivered them was as big a treat to me as to them - if not more so. How can it not be holiday cheer if both sides get great joy out of it? Although I think my baked goods are special, isn't time the best gift to give? It's something that you can only give once, no one wanted to return it, one size fits all, and everyone seems to really love the gift.
Hubby loves to work magic in the kitchen as much as I do. We try to continue Mom's tradition not only at Christmas but through out the year.
Love the delicious sounding recipes and will be giving them a try. We aren't big drinkers either, but a special one at the holidays sounds yummy.

ReplyDeleteThis year, what is bringing me cheer is a little strange (at least to me). My older sister Billy, who was developmentally disabled, passed away very quickly right after Thanksgiving. While I am truly grieving her loss, what is bringing smiles and joy to me is reading (mostly on FB) how she touched so many lives, learning "Billy stories" I've never heard before, just knowing that she really mattered and made a difference to more than just her immediate family.

What gives me cheer and happiness is my divi's. Divi"s are my wonderful dividends which are my four beautiful, extraordinary and fun loving grands who can brighten up any day and make life enjoyable. When we spend precious time together I realize that my world is better. Playing with them, going to parks, giving them snacks and little gifts is gratifying for them but especially for me. I find the art of cocktail creation fascinating. I love the look of layered drinks, but have never attempted one...yet. The thing that brings me cheer in the holiday season is seeing illuminated Christmas decorations throughout the town. Seeing the lights always makes me smile. This year will be a difficult one, the first since my dad died. It will be worse for my mom who spend every Christmas with him since 1959! (Even before they were married.) Still she and I are keeping the traditions.

The tradition of baking with the family, the sugar and the sweet laughter; the tradition of decorating the tree with family, sharing memories and making new moments; and the tradition of eggnog imbibing, cognac, Kaluah, brandy, or some other booze with that fabulous creamy, nutmeggy deliciousness. The sets,the costumes, the cast -- glowing, magical and color-saturated! Garland's red gown and her sister's green one at the Christmas dance are gorgeous, and her sparkling headcover as she sings "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" just adds to the visual splendor of that scene! It's on tonight: hooray! The only way it could've better is if I could cuddle up to Jack as I watch!

This year I am adding watching an old favorite "Junior Miss" on DVD. It's not been available on tv for some time so I finally bought it. ReplyDeleteFor me it is the anticipation of family coming to stay and celebrating the true meaning of Christmas--all the wonderful love and redemption the holiday represents. The preparations such as making casseroles ahead of time and freezing them, just make the anticipation grow. Since I almost lost my Mom this year and a series of miracles and a surgery saved her, the year is extra special.

ReplyDeleteHere in our city we have Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer constructed from an oil rig lined with colorful lights pulling Santa in his sleigh. For 52 years Rudolph is "lit" on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. That begins the holiday season for us & when I see Rudolph pulling Santa in his sleigh I get a holiday spirit rush.

ReplyDeleteIn my life it is my grandchildren who are the reason for all of my enjoyment of the Christmas season. From baking and decorating Christmas cookies with them or taking them shopping for their parents along with seeing their school plays and their holiday band concerts to name a few. And today, just listening to our 7 year old granddaughter be the narrator of today's entire church pageant was an absolute joy which genuinely tugged at our hearts. And one of the most fun we have with our youngest granddaughter is seeing her reaction to where she finds our Elf on the Shelf every day. We also have an elf companion of a reindeer and if she cannot come to visit us I send her a picture each day of where our Elf and Reindeer were found each day and what mischief they got into sometimes. These are just some of what my grandkids do to enhance my life and keep me happy and not thinking as much about negative situations. Thank God for my grandchildren all year long but especially at Christmas time.

This year, it was my nearly two-year-old granddaughter's reaction to my Christmas tree. I actually put it up early so I could see what she thought of it. She loves looking at the ornaments and, since my tree revolves, she gets to look at all of them. We do have to keep an eye on her thought. She likes to hide behind the tree and play with the ornaments she can reach because she's been told she can look and not touch. The whole holiday gives me the most cheer. Going to church for the Christmas concert. The smell of baking cookies in the oven. Opening presents with the family while laughing our heads off. Driving around and looking at the decorated houses. Going to holiday parties and laughing it up with friends. Receiving cards in the mail, which is not to frequent anymore. Watching holiday shows with my hubby and falling asleep on the couch. LOL! Decorating our house and listening to Christmas radio stations. We have one that plays non-stop Christmas songs. Love it! All of this combined gives me a lot of holiday cheer and happiness throughout the whole season!

Trying new recipes and no one complaining--- "I'm on a diet", "I'm full", "No thank-you, I'm sugar free", "It looks great, but I just can't if I'm going to fit into my swimsuit-shorts-wedding dress-blah, blah, blah." and thank-you for all year long supplying my with new ideas to try every week starting just before Thanksgiving and keeping that oven fired up until after the New Year! ReplyDeleteAfter 53 years of living in one place, this year I moved. The back story is long and potentially boring, but I can tell you that I moved to Idaho to be closer to my family. My son and my daughter-in-law bring me constant Christmas cheer and continually make me feel less "fish out of water" in my new town. It's been a heck of an adjustment, but to be able to hug on them and laugh with them more often has filled my Christmas cheer mug to overflowing!

ReplyDeleteI start the season on Thanksgiving by watching Miracle on 34th Street,then throughout December I watch White Christmas Holiday Inn The Bishops Wife and of course Its a Wonderful Life. I've watched these movies for as long as I can remember. Brings back memories of my childhood and our family gatherings. At the same time it makes me sad,I miss my parents so. But I enjoy having our daughters and their spouses together and our 2 1/2 year old granddaughter who is just a joy and we love seeing the wonder in her eyes.

ReplyDeleteSomething that always makes the holidays cheerful for me is baking cookies from my mom's old recipe box. The cards are stained, torn, and worn, but all still legible. After she passed, my dad gave me the recipe box so that I could carry on the tradition of baking her array of cookies for the family each holiday season. What he didn't know was that she left out one key ingredient on every card in the box so that the recipes couldn't be replicated without some skillful deduction and lots of trial and error. It took me about five years of making the cookies before I figured out the missing ingredient in each recipe. It makes me smile as I bake the cookies now just as she did. I didn't put the missing information on the cards. I tucked it away in a recipe journal. It's our little secret. kchinet

ReplyDeleteAs a Pagan, I look forward to my favorite time of the year and ritual, Yule. I love gathering with other Witches in Salem MA and participating in ritual celebrating the Solstice and the turning of the wheel. There always enjoy a wonderful pot luck dinner after ritual. So much fun to be able to visit with friends, some I don't get to see very often. Being with my family and friends during Yule brings me lots of joy because it's a time when we are all together, having a nice dinner, opening Yule gifts and also giving back. That's the joy of the season, spending time with family and friends.

During the holiday season, I love baking our traditional Norwegian Julekake (Christmas bread), Fattigman (cookie) and Krumkake (cookie made 1 at a time) that I grew up eating. I have my grandmother's recipes, her Krumkake iron that she brought with her from Norway when she emigrated. It makes me feel wonderful knowing that she trusted me with her traditions from home.

Looking at my nativity set from when I was a child and plugging it in to see it lit. The figures of Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, the shepherds, and animals take me back to a simpler time and one filled with nostalgia of my childhood. It’s good to reflect and remember.

I like tasty macarons all year long (ideally), and I like mince meat pies. I saw some mince meat macarons online a few hours ago, and I saw they were at a macaron shop in the UK. For me it is our annual family baking day. We get together with my sister and her family. She and I help our kids (who are mostly grown now) bake cookies and goodies, while our husbands handle the outdoor decorations. It helps with live next door to each other. ReplyDeleteI love taking the kids out to look at Christmas lights. They get in their pj's and we make hot chocolate (or our own creation, a "hot vanilla" for the one who dislikes chocolate - crazy, I know!) then drive around the neighborhood. I also enjoy baking different goodies and sharing them with family and friends.
ReplyDeleteWe left Santa soup (Cream of Celery or Cream of Mushroom) in a mug for him to warm up with on Christmas Eve plus some sugar cookies. Only an empty mug and crumbs were left in the morning. Santa also made footprints from the living room fireplace where the stockings were hung on the mantle. The kids could have their stocking which included a tangerine, small box of cereal, candy cane, a bit of chocolate and a small gift. This way the parents could sleep a tad longer before unwrapping the gifts. The bubble lights on the tree reminded me of those I had when I was young. amwiden at aol dot com
ReplyDeleteMy father had taught me of all the wonders of the holidays.. Even what others think of as work. We have enjoyed a variety of Christmas music and decorating on Thanksgiving weekend. It has always given me a beautiful feeling of warmth and comfort over my 50 years. 5 years ago Thanksgiving my sweet father went into the hospital for an operation. He never came out. I believe he held on until Dec 27th just so it would not have been Christmas. I "celebrate him home" every holiday season now remembering all the many gifts he has shown me.

ReplyDeleteIt all began in 1993. Six high school girlfriends and I started getting together the first Sunday in December to make candy to serve at our respective family holiday gatherings. The first year, there were no wee ones in our midst. The second year, the first baby graced us with her beautiful face. The second year, I was pregnant with my son and another girlfriend was pregnant with her first. The third year, our sons were with us and it seemed as though for many years after that, new wee ones joined our merry clan. Over the years, we stopped making candy (the wee ones were simply too busy to let us work our candy magic) and we added crafting with the kiddos. Now, most of the kiddos are out of school (save two still in high school) and the very first baby now has babies of her own! We continue this tradition of sisterly love because, the holidays wouldn't be the holidays without the laughter, tears, stories, games and hugs that we share that first weekend in December. I have no siblings; these ladies are the sisters I chose and I wouldn't have it any other way. How do I know when Christmas is near? When all of us girls get together to celebrate over 30 years of friendship, camaraderie and love. Merry Christmas all.
