"Apples 'n Worms" After-School Snack

by Ellery Adams

My favorite sous chef started a new school last week. I think I was more nervous than she was, but I wanted to make her a special snack so that when she got home, she knew that I thought she was a Grade-A Kid.

I got both of these ideas from other moms who were generous enough to share their ideas online. (I'll post their urls at the bottom)

"Apple" Pretzels

package of snack-size pretzel twists
bag of red chocolate melts
soft green candy for stem like a green gumdrop, Warheads, or Laffy Taffy

Directions

Spray a sheet of parchment paper with cooking spray and place on baking sheet
Cut green candy into apple stems
Melt the chocolate according to package instructions
Dip pretzels into chocolate, let drip, and place on sheet
Add stem
(I put mine in the refrigerator until the kids came home from school because it's still hot here in Virginia)

Grape Worms

What apple treat would be complete without a cute worm? And this one's good for the kids. Simply place grapes on wooden skewers (I cut mine in half) and add a face using icing gel. This is one bug your kids will love to eat!

I remember the snacks my mom had waiting for us when we got home from school. Here's me on my very first day of school.

What was your favorite after school snack?

  2. Aren't these the most adorable things!!! Love 'em and they are fun to make. A great project and snack. My most favorite is coming up on my blog day, so I won't share now, but I love all afternoon snacks and I still do. When doing my homework now (writing), I love a glass of milk and something sweet. Fun habits are hard to break.

Hugs, Ellery and adore your helper. So cute!

  3. What a wonderful post for back-to-school week, Ellery. Those grape worms would be a fun idea for kids' Halloween parties, too. The best of luck to your adorable little sous chef; I hope she ends up absolutely loving her new school. Have a great Sunday!

  7. These are so cute! Something I can do with my granddaughter when she's a little older.

My mom wasn't the homebaked-cookies-fun-to-come-home-to type of mother so I don't remember any fun snacks. We did always have fruit. I worked and got home late (so dinner was late) so my girls always had something substantial after school to tide them over. Their favorite babysitter was the one whose cousin owned the pizza parlor and gave them free slices!

  8. Ellery, you're so cute -- and fashionable. Is that a cape you're wearing? I agree with Cleo, wouldn't those worms be cute for Halloween? So clever! I think I usually had the traditional cookies and milk after school.
