Grilled Chicken Shawarma

I found this packet of Shawarma seasoning in our local Asian grocery store and then went in search of a recipe.  I found this on the blog The Spice House.  It's perfect for when you've had your fill of hamburgers, hot dogs and barbecued chicken but still want to grill.  It makes a lovely light dinner when it's too hot to cook.

For the Chicken

2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken thighs

1 tsp. Shawarma seasoning

3 to 4 tbs. plain yogurt

juice of 1 lemon

For the Garlic Sauce:

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1/2 cup plain yogurt (I used Greek yogurt)

juice of half a lemon

3 to 4 cloves minced garlic

Instructions:

Sprinkle the chicken on both sides with the Shawarma seasoning.  Place in a plastic zip lock bag or a bowl.  Add lemon juice and yogurt.  "Squish" the chicken in the bag to distribute the marinade.  Marinate in the fridge for two to three hours.

While the chicken marinates, mix the garlic sauce.  Add all the sauce ingredients to a bowl and mix well.  Refrigerate.

Grill the chicken over direct high heat until slightly charred and cooked through.  Chop chicken into bite-sized pieces.

Warm pitas.  Fill with chicken and shredded lettuce and tomato and drizzle with garlic sauce.

But it wouldn't be much of a story without a villain, and as American Gothic novelist Penelope Parish is coming to learn, happy-ever-afters are as fraught in this charming British town as they are in her books.

When the Duke's former girlfriend is found murdered at the reception it's up to Penelope and her newfound family at the Open Book bookshop to catch the killer before they strike again.
