Easy Chocolate Tart by Maya Corrigan #Giveaway

This is the easiest tart to make. It's always a hit and would make a great dessert for the 4th of July. The recipe appears in my 4th Five-Ingredient Mystery, The Tell-Tale Tarte. As you can guess, the book has a lot to do with Edgar Allan Poe, author of "The Tell-Tale Heart." A tart (in English) or tarte (in French) is a pastry dish without a top crust. I added an "e" to the Tarte in the book's title because the tell-tale sweet in the book is the French dessert, tarte Tatin.

When I've served this tart for a special occasion, I've used gourmet chocolate. But I recently made it as a treat during quarantine, and chocolate chips were all I had in the pantry, so I used them. The tart was delicious.

What's your favorite way to eat chocolate? Scroll down and leave a comment by Thursday, July 2, for a chance to win cozy mystery grab bag items.

Ingredients

1/2 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup 2% milk or whole milk
8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate
2 large eggs
1 9-inch readymade shortbread pie crust (or a pre-baked homemade sweet crust)
Optional garnishes: whipped cream, ice cream, raspberries, sifted confectioner's sugar

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Heat the cream and milk on high heat in a saucepan until the mixture boils. Remove it from the heat, add the chocolate, and stir until the chocolate is melted.

Beat the two eggs in a bowl and whisk in the chocolate mixture little by little.
When the ingredients are smooth, pour them into the crust.

Bake the tart in the oven for 25-30 minutes until the custard is set. The middle may look soft, but don't worry, it will get firmer as it cools.

Cool the tart for half an hour. Serve warm or cold with ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Serves 8.

Adapted from a recipe by Jacques Haeringer for Auberge Chez Francois in Great Falls, Virginia.

The 7th book in the series, Gingerdead Man, comes out September 29, 2020, and is available now for pre-order from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

This holiday season Bayport, Maryland, is a dead ringer for Victorian London. Val and her grandfather are taking part in the Dickens of a Holiday festival. Val is hosting a private tea party serving the festival's costumed volunteers, who range from Dickens divas like Madame Defarge and Miss Havisham to Ebenezer Scrooge and old St. Nick himself. But one costumed reveler may have gotten the holidays mixed up. The winner of the creepiest outfit, robed in black with a gift bag covering the head hands out gingerbread men with white icing skeleton bones. This year's sour Santa has none of the big fellow's mirth but plenty of his appetite, and it's no secret Santa loves cookies. But when the man in red turns blue, Val and Granddad have a cookie-cutter killer to catch before the New Year . . .
