Death on the Menu Mojito #recipe @LucyBurdette

LUCY BURDETTE: Before visiting Cuba a few years ago, I had never tasted a Mojito, never mind made one. But now it's one of my favorite drinks. And it's great for a celebration, such as the new cover for DEATH ON THE MENU! Isn't it pretty? I especially love the Harry S. Truman Little White House in the background.

In this eighth food critic mystery--coming August 7, we are introduced to a Key West/Havana conference that Hayley Snow's mother is catering (with lots of help from her friends!) One of the themes of the weekend is Hemingway, and mojitos are said to be one of his favorite drinks.

Here's my recipe. The key of course is the fresh mint--it helps to have a pot growing on the balcony!

Ingredients

one lime, sliced
1 lemon, sliced
4 to 5 sprigs mint per glass
2 teaspoons sugar
1 to 2 ounces rum, depending on how strong you want the drink
Club soda
Ice
Bitters

Start by crushing several slices of lime, several slices of lemon, the mint, and 2 teaspoons of sugar in the bottom of an old-fashioned glass. Add the rum and stir. Fill the glass with ice. Fill the ice with club soda or a sparkling water like Pellegrino. Mix and add a splash of bitters on top.

Here's a pre-order the book link from Amazon--and here's a link to preorder a hard copy from RJ Julia in CT, where you'll be able to get a signed copy. Or you can order it from Books and Books in Key West, or call Suzanne Orchard at Key West Island Bookstore ((305) 294-2904)--she'll be delighted to order you a copy! Or really, wherever books are sold...

  1. I am so thrilled that there is another book coming in this series. I've been having withdrawals. I love Key West. One day I'm going to take the high speed ferry from Ft Myers as my husband has never been there. We just moved to SWFL this past August. Congrats and thanks for the good news!!

  3. I went to my normal Amazon page and in the search entered your name. The book does not appear. Thanks for the mojito recipe. I have rum that my family brought back from PR two years ago. Now I know what to use it for.

    1. Enjoy the drink Sue! For some reason, I think you have to enter the title sometimes. Maybe because this is a new publisher??

  5. Hurray! A new book!!!
I had my fist mojito in Key West several years ago.
I think it may be the best one I've ever had. But with my memory, who knows! ;o)

  7. I'm so glad a new Key West story is coming out! I love mojitos. I introduced the drink to some neighbors when we still lived in Minnesota. They loved it.

  8. Terrific cover! And welcome to the Crooked Lane Books stable!! There's used to be a bar in Santa Cruz that featured mojitos, and I swear all the bartenders developed enormous biceps from crushing all that mint and lime drink after drink, night after night...

  11. YAY! Last summer I read one of the series (my first taste of it!) and before I was 1/3 through it I ordered the rest of the series and read them back to back! It's been a long dry spell...August is a long time to wait but WORTH it! While I was reading them I visited Key West on Google Earth...wandered down the streets looking for the places you mentioned...It was great fun seeing all those locations...and imagining myself there in the action as the stories progressed. Love your writing...the new cover is great too!

  16. Congrats on the latest book. I have some time to get caught up in the series before August! I’m not sure about the drink...but I do have plenty of mint growing right outside my door. Always happy to share!
