It’s a Wrap, Part Deux! Getting Fruity

Ah, back to school. It’s a combination of a happy, exciting time…and a really busy one. I always think I’m going to have a lot of extra time to myself when school starts back. I’m not sure why I keep thinking this because I’m usually dashing around town doing supply shopping (and spending way too much since putting a writer in an office supply store is like putting a kid in a candy store), and signing tons of school paperwork.

So….we need easy school lunchbox lunches! Both my middle school son and my elementary school daughter pack their lunch. The cafeteria, they assure me, is gross. :)

But, unfortunately, they get bored pretty quickly with standard lunchbox fare of a sandwich, chips, apple, and cookies. Actually, they immediately get bored with that.

Sometimes it takes a little creativity to get kids to eat their lunch instead of trading it out (like Avery mentioned) or packing it back in the lunchbox uneaten.

Jenn was right on target with her post yesterday on wraps. You can get a child to eat just about anything if you wrap it up. I’ve gotten so that I like to give my kids whole wheat wraps…and, surprisingly, I haven’t gotten any push-back from them on it at all.

This wrap doesn’t have to be a lunchbox item—it would work great for an after-school snack…or even for a quick breakfast as you’re running out the door!

*Take an 8-inch tortilla (whole wheat if you really want to get healthy)

*Spread the tortilla with 1 T peanut butter

*Spread 1 T of sugar free strawberry preserves over the peanut butter Top with sliced bananas

*Sprinkle the bananas with granola or with any crunchy cereal you like.
Roll the tortillas

Enjoy!

  2. That sounds absolutely yummy. My kids tire of their lunch very early too, and this seems like something they may enjoy.
And right you are about having even less time after they get back to school.

  4. The boys will like this one. I might have to fight them over it ha. It really does look yummy and I don't think they would want to trade this out.

  5. As I mentioned earlier this week, my two boys think they are two old to take their lunches to school. However, as an elementary school librarian think this is perfect for my lunch.

  6. Sounds like a delicious snack even adults could use to re-energize themselves after a long day of working.

  7. I love adding the granola! What fun. And lunch notes. I used to write my son notes and never once got an "Aw, Mom, cut it out." which meant he loved them. Sure, he probably wadded them up and tossed them as quickly as he could but still...memories.

Rayna--It *seems* like all this time would be opened up for us, but actually...:)

~ Babs--And that's really what we're aiming for, isn't it? Not having the food traded out! :)

Bookwoman--I had it for lunch yesterday and it hit the spot!

Mason--It's filling, but gives a little jolt of energy--exactly what I need. :)

A Year on the Grill--I *thought* about Elvis as soon as I pulled this together! See, he's my inspiration.

Avery--The granola gives it a nice crunch. My son used to complain about notes in his lunchbox, but I think he secretly loved them. I think. :)

  14. Great lunch ideas even for grown ups! I am a peanut butter nut....and it's good for whoever eats it...very nutritious. I have several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who would enjoy this as a snack at Gramma's house; and they'd really love winning such a cool prize. Thanks for the giveaway and I appreciate the chance to win this gift for my kids!
