VMBURNS: Today, I'm thrilled to have Daryl Wood Gerber in the kitchen. She's sharing information about her new book, a lovely recipe, and a fantastic giveaway! Welcome, Daryl!
DARYL WOOD GERBER: I’m so excited to be here. I had such a blast writing my latest release, MURDER IN A LAVENDER DAZE and can’t wait to share it with the world. I did a lot of research about aroma therapy. I learned more about mindful meditations, too. As for the main event, a happily divorced party, I came up with the idea when I was in Arizona doing a book signing at the Poisoned Pen. On my way there, I saw a pedal bus filled with happy young women pumping their legs while gleefully sipping beverages, and I wondered what they were celebrating. It wasn’t a bridesmaid contingency. No one was wearing a veil. I told my writing pals about it and asked for suggestions, and one of them said someone is getting happily divorced. Done! Nailed! Loved it! I told my editor the idea and she was totally on board.
If you’re not familiar with the Aroma Wellness Mysteries, it features a spa in the Courtyard of Peace located in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The owner also has a café and gift shop. At the gift shop, customers can browse wind chimes and essential oils and beautiful candles. At the café, they can dine on good-for-you food . . . that tastes good!
Emma owns the spa with her grandmother. Her cousin Sierra, who is like a sister to her, runs the café. She’s always trying to give Emma advice about what to eat.
This quiche, which is so simple that you can probably make it blindfolded—as long as you use a premade pie crust—contains kale. Now, I’m not a raw kale fan. It’s just a tad too crunchy for me, but when cooked, it’s delicious. And kale is good for you. It contains antioxidants that help prevent cell damage and may also help protect against cancer. You can also count on kale to help support the health of your eyes, your immune system, and, yes, even your heart. Last but not least, kale is filling and low in calories, so it can help you maintain a healthy weight.
Unless of course, you’re eating it in a quiche because, let’s face it, quiche has cheese, eggs, milk, and pastry, so . . . it’s not super low calorie, but you only need one slice—approximately 300 calories and 14 grams of protein!
Enjoy!
Kale Leek Mushroom Quiche
(Yield: 1 quiche, 6 servings)
2 large leeks, whites only 2 cups chopped kale
¼ cup shitake mushrooms, rinsed and diced 2 tablespoons olive oil 5 eggs
⅓ cup milk
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon white pepper ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons prepared mustard
¾ cup grated Gruyère cheese 9-inch pie crust (regular or gluten-free)
Rinse leeks and slice off the green ends. Discard and use only the whites. Chop the whites. Sauté leeks over medium heat with the olive oil, about 3 minutes.Remove from heat and allow the vegetables to cool slightly.
In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs, milk and spices. Mix in the grated Gruyère cheese.
Place kale, leeks, and shitake mushrooms in pie crust. Pour egg mixture over.
Bake in a 375 degree oven for 35–45 minutes.
Emma Brennan always knew that her idyllic California hometown of Carmel-by-the-Sea would be the perfect place to open her very own spa. The success of her Aroma Wellness Spa, gift shop, and café has proved her right. But while the business is located in the Courtyard of Peace, Emma finds herself privy to events that are far from serene—like murder . . .
With its soothing décor and tempting treatments, customers are flocking to Aroma Wellness for more than just facials and massages. Lately, Emma has been booking private events, from spa parties to bridal showers and birthdays. Next on her calendar is something really unique: A “Happily Divorced” party.
After eight years of marriage, Addison Lacey is divorcing her husband, whom she claims convinced her he was Mr. Nice Guy when he was really Mr. Controlling Guy. To kick off her journey toward becoming a better version of herself, Addison wants to celebrate, bigtime. Her wealthy mother, Gianna, a former model turned difficult diva, is footing the bill. . . . But when Emma goes to Gianna’s home to pick up the final payment, she and Addison find her dead in her bed amid the aroma of lavender, with an herbal-infused pillow from the party nearby.
Soon, Addison is a prime suspect. But Emma knows there are plenty of others Gianna rubbed the wrong way, including her soon-to-be ex-son-in-law. Once again, with the help of her cousin, her nana, and her trusted Birman cat, Vivi, Emma is determined to sniff out a killer—whether the police like it or not . . .

ReplyDeleteHi, Lucy, hope all is well! :) I adore quiche.
DeleteQuiche Lorraine is my favorite
ReplyDeleteIt's one of my faves, too, Mary!
DeleteThank you for the Kale Leek Mushroom Quiche recipe!
ReplyDeleteWhile my standard go to is ham, cheese and onions (because they are always on hand), I'm always anxious to experiment with new recipes. This one sounds so yummy and I know hubby's going to love it.

Kay, hope you enjoy it. It's delicious and the kale really breaks down well in a quiche.
DeleteWelcome back to Mystery Lovers' Kitchen, Daryl! And a huge congratulations on your upcoming release! I like all kinds of quiche, but especially those that have a lot of veggies... your recipe is definitely one I need to try.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kim. I'm a veggie person, too, but no peppers. :)
DeleteI like straight up Quiche Lorraine as a rule but this recipe looks delicious! I cant wait to try making it!
ReplyDeleteNancy, enjoy! I love all the readers willing to take a chance.
DeleteWelcome! Broccoli 🥦🧀 and cheese for me!
ReplyDeleteDonna, that's one of my favorites, too.
DeleteYour Quiche looks delectable. I enjoy a quiche with kale, tomatoes, mushroom, leek and peas. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteTraveler, what a combo. Sounds interesting. I'll have to try it.
DeleteHam & Cheese only in my Quiche Love both ham and cheese
ReplyDeletedon.stewart@zoominternet.net
Crystal, got it. :)
DeleteWelcome to the Kitchen! Your quiche looks yummy. I enjoy peppers, broccoli, egg and cheese in mine. Love the book cover for Murder in a Lavender Daze. Thank you for the chance!
ReplyDeletejarjm1980(at)hotmail(dot)com
Jarjm, I'm good with most anything except peppers. They hate me.
DeleteI think I’ve only had the ham and cheese variety but the veggie ones sound delicious
ReplyDeleteWskwared(at)yahoo(dot)com
Anon, be courageous and daring. Try this one. ;)
DeleteWelcome!! Quiche all the way: broccoli & cheese, Lorraine, artichoke, and loaded with vegetables, bacon, and cheese. Basically, anything you can put in a pie shell with a custard, I'm there for! Also loved Essence of Foul Play and Murder on the Page and Murder by the Millions!! lgmiller831@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteOoh, Laurie, artichokes? You won me over. Good idea.
DeleteMy favorite quiche is Spinach. But whenever I add any kind of meat, the liquid, in the last step, overflows. Seems like a long time, since I had a good one! johnlong83@rocketmail.com.
ReplyDeleteHmm, John, that dos seem puzzling. Maybe you need a deeper dish for the quiche if it contains meat?
Delete14 grams of protein is great! I like quiches - especially spinach or bacon and cheese. aprilbluetx at yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteSpinach, broccoli, mushrooms, cheese, ham...yum!! Is that too stuffed? ;-)
ReplyDeleteNo, Miss Jen, that is perfection! Love it.
DeleteIt's lovely to have you visit the kitchen today!
ReplyDeleteThis quiche sounds tasty.
I think the ingredients need some editing. "¼ shitake mushrooms, rinsed and diced 2 tablespoons olive oil 5 eggs" "1 teaspoon white pepper ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons prepared mustard
¾ cup grated Gruyère cheese 9-inch pie crust (regular or gluten-free)"
This could also be made without the crust...but where's the fun in that?!
libbydodd at ocmast dot net
You should hire yourself out as a proofreader, Libby. 1/4 cup of the mushrooms. I'll get that amended. Thanks. Yes, it can be made without crust. I have and I love it. ;)
DeleteYes to quiche! Classic Lorraine, spinach, mushroom. It's all good! patdupuy@yahoo.com
ReplyDeletePat, glad you agree. It is ALL good. ;)
DeleteMy ideal quiche is ham and cheese.
ReplyDeleteAllison, you are not alone. :)
DeleteMy Italian Grandma put pepperoni in hers. So my favorite is pepperoni and cheese.
ReplyDeleteAmanda, ooh, I like that idea. Like ham but spicier :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely give-away! Yes, please, I'll have quiche. My favorite is one my husband made me - havarti cheese, chopped Canadian bacon, asparagus and mushroom. To lighten up the recipe I will often skip the pie crust and make it crustless. madamhawk at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI haven't made one with havarti, but I love that cheese! Nice.
DeleteSpinach is the one I have but the ham and cheese sounds good. Deborah deborahortega229@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteDeborah, spinach quiche is so perfect.
DeleteWhat a nice give away! Quiche, yes! Though I like all kinds of mix ins, my favorite is Quiche Lorraine.
ReplyDeleteSusan, you are among friends with that choice.
DeleteQuiche is yummy. I would add peppers to your recipe and vegetables. Thanks for the giveaway! deborahdumm(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteDeborah, I can't do peppers, but for those who love them, it's a good addition!
DeleteNo quiche for me. I don't eat eggs, and haven't since I was a kid. My Dad said it was because my Mom made me eat an egg every morning when I was really young. I don't remember that, so I must have been really young. I'm a big fan of essential oils and I'm looking forward to reading your new series.
ReplyDeletediannekc8(at)gmail(dot)com
Aw, Dianne, sorry about the eggs. I have a friend who is allergic. Glad to hear you're a fan of essential oils!
DeleteI like quiche I just don't often make it. Spinach over kale. I'm looking forward to Murder in a Lavender Daze. awanstromatyahoodotcom
ReplyDeleteApril, thanks. Glad you're looking forward to the book. Me, too. :)
DeleteLove quiche! Can't wait for the new book! ljbonkoski@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteLori, thanks. Hope you enjoy the story.
DeleteLori, you're the winner of this giveaway by random selection. Congrats. I'll reach out to you via email.
DeleteI love quiche. I love ham, cheese, onion and spinach in mine. cherierj(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteCherie, a lovely combo, for sure.
ReplyDeleteWe call it mystery quiche around here. It has whatever combo of veggies and cheese we have in the fridge. If I plan ahead to make quiche, green chili with Monterey Jack cheese is the real fav! This one sounds delicious. Thanks for visiting and the giveaway. I remember that event at the Poison Pen! Makennedyinaz at hotmail dot com
ReplyDeleteMystery quiche is a great idea. So many things can go into a quiche. And thanks for mentioning the Pen. Love that store! :)
DeleteI love quiche. Not sure about kale though. baileybounce2@att.net
ReplyDeleteSherry, I don't like kale as a salad. Too crunchy and somewhat bitter, but it really does work in a quiche and it's so good for you. But you can always swap out with spinach. :)
DeleteThe winner of this giveaway by random selection is Lori B. Thanks to all for your comments.
