LIBBY KLEIN: It's summertime and that means Beach Vacation for the Libby clan. My family makes an annual trek back to Cape May where I grew up. We hit all the usual tourist spots - the beach, the boardwalk, the mini golf. But when it comes to eating, most of our favorite places fly under the general tourist radar. Well, they don't fly under the radar anymore. Not since everything is on the internet now. But back when the kids were little we had a lot of places only known to locals.
I bet you have a favorite summer vacation treat. Let us know in the comments what it is and you'll be entered to win some great books to go along with your summer reading. Be sure to include your email address so we know who to send the good news to. How about the rest of you Mystery Lovers' Kitchen bloggers? What is your favorite vacation food?
🥓🍺🍦
MADDIE DAY: What a fun topic, Libby! At the Milky Way, I might opt for the soft serve cone with a dipped chocolate coating with chopped peanuts, but I digress.
Growing up, our vacations every year were two weeks tent-camping in Sequoia National Park among the giant California redwoods. During those two weeks only, we got to have Tang instead of OJ (from a frozen concentrate), "real" Log Cabin maple syrup (instead of my mom's sugar syrup flavored by Mapeleine), bacon EVERY DAY, and S'mores over the campfire. These were huge treats for our family of six living on one schoolteacher's salary.
These days, Hugh and I sometimes take a summer week at different spots in Maine, where of course we'll sample the local lobster roll and hit up the best brewpub beer and fare.

Lobster roll, fish bisque, and beers on the harbor in Belfast, Maine. |
Throw in an ear of of sweet corn from a local farm, a slice of my own peach pie with a scoop of Hodgies vanilla ice cream on top, plus a gin and tonic on the deck? I don't need to go anywhere.
🍑🍅🌽
LUCY BURDETTE: We had the grandkids here for a week and I can assure you that they are not gourmet eaters. Their idea of vacation food is hot dogs and ice cream. While they have hot dogs, I have my favorite tuna melt sandwich with a big pickle spear and a bag of chips. Sometimes a root beer float on the side. Yes, I put on a pound or two, but it was worth it!
🍏🍞🍮
Although at this exact moment, one of Lucy's root beer floats would be terrific! Whatever your vacation treats, enjoy!
🍨🍓🍦
KIM DAVIS: I love vacations because I allow myself to ignore
all attempts at eating healthy, and indulge my taste buds. Back when my husband’s
parents were still living, we’d travel to Danville, Illinois twice a year (for
many, many years) to spend a week or so with them—at Mother’s Day and then in
October for their anniversary. While it wasn’t a “real” vacation, there were
two treats I always looked forward to. The first was my mother-in-law’s rhubarb pie. Even though she taught me how to make it, somehow hers was always so much
better! I was known to get up early and finish the pie for breakfast before
anyone else could claim that last piece. Dessert for breakfast is a vacation
must!
The second treat I couldn’t wait to get was the Custard Cup’s turtle sundae. Swoon-worthy! This iconic custard stand was a family-owned business that started in 1949. As the owners aged, they only opened it from May to October
(and could be why our visits coincided with those months, lol). I’ve heard that
the owners finally sold the business and the new owners are still creating the
same delectable custards. Since my in-laws have passed, we no longer visit the area,
but I still crave those turtle sundaes!
🍦🍉🍭
LESLIE KARST: Here in Santa Cruz, we have the marvelous Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, with its famous Giant Dipper roller coaster. But the seaside amusement part is also home to a variety of fun treats which I would never eat except when I make my annual visit to ride the Giant Dipper. In which case, I may indulge in a dipped soft-serve ice cream cone.
Or perhaps some cotton candy. Or a frozen Snickers bar. Or maybe even a deep-fried Twinkie (don't knock it if you haven't tried it!). But best of all is the salt water taffy, made and pulled as you watch. Yum!
🍇🍨🍉
VICKI DELANY: Vacation food! What a great
thing to think about. Like Maddie, I rarely
travel in the summer, I prefer to be home with the garden and the pool. I
travel a lot the rest of the year, and my favourite vacation food then is - what’s
on the menu! For the purposes of this topic, rather than travel for summer
vacation, I often have family here. And I definitely have favourites I always
like to make for them. In Ontario summer in blueberry season and this is just
about the best way I’ve found to bake with blueberries.

PEG COCHRAN/MARGARET LOUDON: When I was a kid, my family always spent a week on Cape Cod. The biggest treat was a steamed lobster. My father would buy them and bring them back to the rustic cottage we rented every year. Another treat I looked forward to was fried clams. I'd love some right now but clams are rather rare in Michigan!
Another much anticipated summer event was a trip to Asbury Park, NJ. We always went in the evening when my father got off work. They wouldn't tell us we were going until the last minute or we would have driven my mother crazy all day! We strolled the boardwalk, played some games and of course I had to have cotton candy!
I traveled a fair amount as an adult (BC--before children.) I loved sampling the local dishes. One memorable vacation was in Portugal where the food was all so fresh and delicious. When we came home, I had to try my hand at making caldo verde, the traditional Portuguese soup.
🌽🍓🍉
MOLLY MACRAE: The Custard Cup! Kim, we live
within walking distance of the Champaign Jarling’s Custard Cup. We walk over
there every time the grandchildren come here for vacation or to visit. It’s
practically a law – no one goes back to Ohio until they’ve had their Jarling’s.
When I was a kid we had a lot of picnics on vacation – packing sandwiches and fruit into the big wicker picnic basket. Some of those picnics were mighty cold but that didn’t stop us. Carrying that tradition forward, here’s a picture my husband snapped one cold and foggy picnic with our boys and my dad on top of Roan Mountain in Tennessee. Great times!

CLEO COYLE: Summertime always revives wonderful sensory memories for me and my husband: the smell of fresh-cut grass, the crunch of corn on the cob, the splash of pool water, and swoosh and awe of fireworks. After all of these years, some of my favorite "vacation foods" are still wrapped up in those childhood memories.
Every year in June, after spending nine months cooped up in classrooms, we kids were rewarded with a special "school picnic" day at Kennywood, a charming, century-old amusement park south of Pittsburgh.
As a budding foodie, I looked forward to noshing on the park's carnival food as much as riding its landmark wooden coasters. Corn Dogs, CANDY APPLES, fresh-cut fries, cotton candy, and ICE CREAM (yes, all in one day of indulgence)...
If you missed my recipe post on how to make an easy
homemade (no-churn, no-machine) Vanilla Ice Cream,

I loved going to Kennywood Park so much as a child, I even took a summer job there between high school and college. I was a "Rides" girl and worked on crews that ran everything from the Ferris Wheel and Bob Sleds to the Pirate Ship, and even this locally famous old coaster: The Jack Rabbit...

We didn't take many vacation trips growing up. We would go to the county fair and my treat was salt water taffy instead of the fudge. If we traveled, it was to my grandparents home in Washington. My grandma Stell made these little, light pancakes. They weren't crepes, we called the Norwegian pancakes. Grandpa put just butter and sugar on them.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention Mom's potato salad. She only made during the summer. deanaedale@aol.com
DeleteMy mom only made potato salad in the summer, too!
DeleteWe always went camping in the summer and a highlight was cooking steaks over the campfire. baileybounce2@att.net
ReplyDeleteWe did a lot of camping during the summer growing up, but the only food I remember is roasting marshmallows over the campfire, lol! And like Edith, we got Tang instead of orange juice for breakfast when camping.
DeleteIt’s Ice Cream! Nothing is better than having a waffle Cone filled with Butter Pecan Ice Cream!!!! 🥰

I agree, ice cream is a must on vacation! Although whatever flavor I choose has to have some chocolate in it :)
DeleteWe went to a small park that had a few rides, but I always had cotton candy, loved watching them put it on the stick, around and around the bin. now I love corn dogs, thanks ! annelovell12@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI looked forward to funnel cakes, even as an adult. Okay, I want one now.

As a kid we always went to stay at my grandparents place in upstate NY. We lived in NYC. We always had ice cream from was called the Dairy Barn. It was fresh home ice cream from there dairy farm. The flavors were so good. .Another thing was homemade potatoe and macaroni salads. It was relaxing to have a sandwich for dinner with either salad. I miss those days of long ago. Lois Rotella, rainonlois@aol.com
ReplyDeleteI always love a a great steak kabob with homemade potatoes salad in the summertime and some Great homemade icecream.

We made hand-cranked ice cream in the summer when I was a kid - delicious!
DeleteWe did the hand-cranked ice cream when I was a kid as well! I'll never forget the horror my parents had when I thought I was helping out by dumping all the salt water & left over ice over the grass to water it... it took a long, long time for the grass to recover!
DeleteI don't have a favorite vacation food. I like to peruse the menus for something new each time.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid, our family rarely went away on summer vacation. But a summer tradition was to go to the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) near the Toronto waterfront. FYI, the CNE is similar to US state fairs and has been running since 1879. Of course, I enjoyed the junk food I could only eat once a year: Tiny Tim's mini donuts made fresh, cotton candy & weird fried foods like deep-fried Mars bars or deep-fried butter! Also summertime concerts with Canadian & int'l bands were held at the Molson Amphitheatre. Last time I went to the CNE as an adult was in 2013.

Peaches and peach ice cream from the Creamery at Penn State. The best!
ReplyDeleteMy mom would make peach ice cream from our own Southern California peaches. To die for!
DeleteWe always look forward to getting the soft serve ice cream cones when we are on vacation. Peanut butter and chocolate ice cream twist. Yum. anitalklaboe @aol.com
ReplyDeleteI LOVE soft serve ice cream--vanilla dipped in chocolate!
DeleteI like to try new foods, depending on where I go on vacation, so I don't really have a favorite. I've had fried gator in Louisiana, authentic Mexican food in Mexico, fresh seafood in Florida, and delicious bbq in Nashville. I've enjoyed it all. 3labsmom(at)gmail(dot)com.
ReplyDeleteThe best vacation food I ever had was in Hawaii. We found a tiny little Chinese restaurant in a mall by the beach where you had to stand in line and order your food. We went there every day and ordered the same thing. Big deep fried shrimp and these yummy wide noodles that I don't know what they were called and I've never found them again. ckmbeg (at) gmail (dot) com

ReplyDeleteSorry about the anonymous. Didn’t know how to change it until now.
DeleteFor several years, my favorite summer treat was Starbucks S'Mores frappuccino. I have a lovely photo of my late husband digging in on the ship on the first day of our last Caribbean cruise together. Unfortunately, Starbucks seems to have abandoned it! My other favorites go WAY back, before I even had a husband, children, or grandchildren. My parents and I would often spend a few days in Ocean City, NJ during the summer, and that was where I learned to love Boston cream pie. I can't remember the name of the restaurant, but--thank you! Yes, I have made Boston cream pie myself a few times, but it never was as memorable of the same dessert in the summertime at our favorite beach vacation spot. mbunting@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteI found a copycat recipe for the Starbucks S'mores! https://www.mandyolive.com/starbucks-smores-frappuccino-copycat/

We recently enjoyed the Eastern shore of Maryland. Fresh seafood especially the crabs. So succulent and delicious. Followed by a sugar cone with freshly made ice cream.

My Mom and Dad took us on picnics to the lake. Mom packed fried chicken, potato salad, deviled eggs and watermelon. My Dad would fish and the kids would swim. On vacation we visited family in another state. We went all over Branson Missouri and visited Elvis's home Graceland went to old towns where they had a blacksmith and candle makers. The foods I was excited for as a child was corn dogs, cotton candy and taffy. Deborah deborahortega229@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteWe always took frank furters, tuna salad, boxes of cereal and cartons of milk Although, these days, if I could go camping I'd add a bag of bugles and coconut water. Alternatively mango juice, if I could get some.
ReplyDeleteFavorite summer foods were and still are mouth watering fresh tomatoes which I eat daily. Peaches freshly picked are wonderful. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteTomatoes still warm from the garden are the best!
DeleteIce cream is something we have enjoyed at various locations. In Florida, we loved the broiled Rock Shrimp. Maybe a local German restaurant. Salt water taffy is also a treat. javabeagle(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteSummer means Maine and that means lobster rolls and lobster chowder. It also calls for the best ice cream ever: John's Ice Cream in Liberty, Maine. His peanut butter crunch is wicked good!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that in south Florida it is hard to find decent ice cream. In Maine, almost every town has an ice cream place with their homemade delights.
@Molly regarding cold picnics--one winter when living in NY state we and another couple decided that we just HAD to have a BBQ, regardless of the weather. We scraped the snow off the grill and took turns snuggling their dog for warmth!
libbydodd at comcast dot net
I have been known to brush off the grill in the winter! Especially if we are treating ourselves to a good steak.
DeleteIt's not really vacation food but summer to me is sweet corn, fresh tomatoes and watermelon. And I love saltwater taffy. kathyclugston3@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI usually vacation in Holland, Michigan and I have some favorite places I like to visit when I'm there. One is The Windmill Restaurant for a hashbrown omelet with bacon and no egg. I also like to go to Goog's for an olive burger and Captian Sunday for a turtle Sunday. Some of my favorite things in Holland, but the best of all is going to Lake Michigan.

Oh, my! I’m hungry now! As a kid summer vacation food was Kraft caramels, Twizzlers, individual boxed cereals, and a trip to the bakery in Forest or Grand Bend.
ReplyDeleteNowadays, the best summer food is toasted fresh tomatoes 🍅 , fresh corn on the cob 🌽 and fresh perch 🎣, with a side of Kraft caramels and Twizzlers and a can of hard cider 🍺
Thanks for the chance to win!
Debra in Ontario
mickee(at)rogers(dot)com
I could eat corn on the cob every day! Followed by Twizzlers!
DeleteMy favourite summer treat as a child was popcorn cooked over our Coleman stove on a picnic table in a popcorn basket with a long handle so we didn’t burn our hands. Now it’s cherry tomatoes picked fresh from our plants in the backyard!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the opportunity to win such wonderful books ❤️📚

To escape the heat, we head up the CA coast to Morro Bay, and my favorite food is clam chowder and, for breakfast every day, cinnamon rolls! At the Ventura County Fair, it's always funnel cakes and the big stick of spiral Tornado potatoes! lgmiller831@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI love the cinnamon bread from Dollywood! slmcarthur@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteJust back from a 2 week adventure with 2 friends. We managed to eat at local restaurants throughout the journey from OH to ND and back across the UP of MI. Great fun and good food the entire trip.
ReplyDeleteDuring the summer we used to go camping at Knoebel's Grove in Elysburg, PA....the best amusement park and camping area I've ever found. Nothing beats the food there, especially the funnel cakes!! phanfavorite38_@webtv.net
ReplyDeleteI'm Brenda Looney by the way....I don't have much of a clue when it comes to online things lol
DeleteWe wouldn't have had any vacations when I was a kid if my aunt hadn't lived in Florida. We went when I was three( I don't remember that) and ten. There was a place that had mile-long hot dogs. Plus, my aunt had two mango trees in her front yard so we loved mangoes well before anyone else in Central PA.
ReplyDeleteWhat we did do was have picnics with all the trimmings. Sometimes we stopped at places for ice cream, usually soft serve. Grandma had a sour cherry tree so we had cherry pies. Dad took us berry picking along the railroad until they sprayed so we had black raspberries, blackberries, and dewberries and baked goods made with them. My parents had an ice cream machine so we had homemade ice cream, too. Plus, I loved watermelon as a kid. Thanks for the chance.
We didn’t vacation as a kid . We grilled out . Hamburgers , hotdogs , watermelon
ReplyDeleteWe go to the Olympic Penisula in Washington State every year and our favorite summer treat is fresh Dungeness crab that we buy in one pound containers of delicious crab meat at COSTCO. Crab salads, crab salad sandwiches, seafood enchiladas, Crab Rockefeller...we indulge without shame! donnascott@pullman.com
