Libby Klein New Year, New Detox. That's my life. I usually overdo it over the holidays. It's not hard to do with allergies and illness being my status quo. So every January I go on a little detox and cut out all the bad things. (Keep in mind that the bad things for me are normal things for most people.) My biggest nemesis right now is nightshades - peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant. My legs are a mess of hives. Trust me, you don't want to know. Benadryl has been my best friend. There was an incident with a blackening spice rub that included paprika that set me back a few days. I have no one to blame but myself. I know better. Read labels even when you think you know the ingredients. As soon as I start a detox or elimination diet, I always look for recipes that will make me feel like I'm having a treat. A sugar free, gluten free, dairy free treat. This healthy breakfast crisp is just the thing for a cold winter morning. Apples and sour cherries give it a natural sweetness. The crunchy oat and pecan topping makes it feel more like a dessert than a detox breakfast. You could even serve it to company with a scoop of ice cream. They'd be thrilled.

Layla is taking her new life one day at a time from the Lake Pinecrest Trailer Park she now calls home. Being alone is how she likes it. Simple. Uncomplicated. Though try telling that to the group of local ladies who are in relentless pursuit of Layla as their new BFF, determined to make her join them for coffee and donuts.
After her first career ended in a literal explosion, Layla’s trying to eke out a living as a rock musician. It’s not easy competing against garage bands who work for tacos and create their music on a computer, while all she has is an electric guitar and leather-ish pants. But Layla isn’t in a position to turn down any gig. Which is why she’s at an 8-year-old’s birthday party, watching as Chuckles the Clown takes a bow under the balloon animals. No one expects it will be his last . . .
Who would want to kill a clown—and why? Layla and her unshakable posse are suddenly embroiled in the seedy underbelly of the upper-class world of second wives and trust fund kids, determined to uncover what magnetic hold a pudgy, balding clown had over women who seem to have everything they could ever want. Then again, Layla knows full well that people are rarely quite what they seem—herself included . . .
classes revolved mostly around the Culinary sciences and Drama, with one brilliant semester in Poly-Sci that may have been an accident. Hives, hives, go away! Come again no other day!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great way to placate those sweet teeth (sweet tooth? sweet teeth?). If ice cream is a no go, how about some plain yogurt plopped on top?
Yogurt would be fabulous! Especially for breakfast.
DeleteThank you for the yummy Healthy Breakfast Crisp recipe! I think after the holidays we all need to step back and at least get back to "normal". I know I do. I'm back to trying to lose a few pounds. I would rather think of it as a few pounds and then I can look forward to a few more instead of having the total in my mind because that can be so boggling to the brain. :) I totally agree with you that a little bit is better than feeling deprived which usually always ends in binge eating. I can do that on certain foods when hubby eats something I don't need to eat even though I love it. Yes, I married a man that can eat anything, everything and as much as he wants and never gains an ounce. GEEE WHIZ! LOL Other times, I just leave the room and occupy myself with something else like reading until I know the forbidden food is put away and it's safe to return to the room.

If I like something well enough, putting it away won't make it safe. I learned a long time ago that I'll eat frozen cookies.
DeleteOh I feel your pain!!! I am also celiac with lactose intolerance and those nightshades can sneak up in the most unlikely places. I've had to detox more than once. I think that I lived mostly on oatmeal, chicken and squash. This breakfast looks amazing and I have everything on hand. I hope that you feel better soon, the itching is intense, thank goodness for Benadryl!
ReplyDeleteI *think* what happens is that once the immune systems is having a flare, even a small amount of nightshade is enough for a sever reaction. And my Christmas eating put me in a really big flare.
DeleteSounds divine!
