Cleo Coyle's CODA connection (yes, the Oscar-nominated film!) + Royal Tara #Giveaway News

From Cleo Coyle: Marc and I absolutely loved the Oscar-nominated film CODA, which stands for "children of deaf adults," a beautiful story about a high school girl named Ruby, the only hearing member of her boisterous family, a working-class Gloucester clan that runs their own fishing boat, earning their living through hard daily work.

As we get to know Ruby, we learn she has a secret passion for singing, a talent her deaf father, mother, and older brother can never fully understand or appreciate. When a well-meaning teacher encourages Ruby to train for an audition to study at Boston's Berklee College of Music, she faces a crossroads. Because her family depends on her to help them negotiate the hearing world, her depature to pursue her dream may be too difficult for Ruby and her family to bear.

CODA not only won top prizes at Sundance, it was recently awarded the Best Picture honor by the Producers Guild of America, and the coveted top Screen Actor's Guild honor for best cast of the year, making history for the first film to win this honor with a predominantly deaf cast.

For the Academy Awards, coming up this Sunday (March 27), CODA is nominated for Best Picture again, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapated Screenplay. This is a stunning achievement for a modest indie film. And because we loved it so much, we would have recommended it anyway, but there is another reason we're excited to share the news about this film with you.

Accomplished stage and screen actor Rebecca Gibel has a small role in the film, and we were thrilled to see her as part of this amazing cast simply because she has voiced our Coffeehouse Mystery characters for years through her talented narration of our audiobooks.

For 19 books now, Rebecca has given audio life to our cast of Coffeehouse characters, and we could not be happier about her involvement in this wonderful picture!

So happy congrats to CODA and our audiobook narrator
Rebecca Gibel on all the well-deserved recognition!

👌 You can see CODA now in theaters
and streaming on Apple TV+

  4. Hello Cleo, I have been a fan of your Coffeehouse Mysteries for years. I buy them in print because I enjoy reading the stories, and I also enjoy making your recipes. I have started to listen to them on audio while I’m driving or walking. I enjoy how Rebecca Gibel voices all the characters in your series. Ms. Gibel is quite talented, and HONEY ROASTED was so good! Please do not stop writing. I am also looking forward to watching CODA. From how you describe it, this sounds like a movie I would enjoy watching with my whole family, and movies like that are the best. Congratulations to the CODA cast on all their honors!

    1. Hi, Libby - 350 F. is a pretty standard oil frying temp. but many people do not have the proper (safe) thermometer for measuring hot oil, which is why we (via Matt!) have directions that help novice cooks determine when the oil is hot enough (but not too hot).

Thanks for dropping by the Kitchen!

  7. Few movies really touch your heart strings, but this one played a symphony! I loved each minute, laughing and crying sometimes at the same time! The connection to your books makes it even more special! I will be rooting for it from the couch on Sunday night hopefully after a dinner of Italian fried shrimp! Grazie!

    1. You're very welcome, Sharon! And cheers for rooting for CODA (Marc and I will be too!), but whatever happens at the 2022 Oscars, this little indie film has beaten the odds as a winner with so many awards already. Its Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay are wins in themselves because they've encouraged so many more people to discover it. The film truly does touch the heart while opening the door for new understanding. Cheers again and thanks for stopping by the Kitchen!
