Happy Easter!

 

TINA KASHIAN: Happy Easter to all who celebrate! One of our favorite Easter traditions is familiar to Middle Eastern and Greek families. We dye Easter eggs with onion skins or colorful dye like many families. But we then “challenge” a family/friend to an egg tapping game. To play, each player holds an egg, and one taps the end of her egg lightly against the end of the other player’s egg. If your egg does not crack, then you are the winner and free to challenge another with your winning egg. It’s a lot of fun, and I didn’t understand the religious significance of the game until I was older. The egg represents Christ’s tomb. When the egg cracks, it symbolizes Christ’s emergence from the tomb and birth into eternal life. As a child, I thought everyone played this game with their eggs. My Irish-English husband had never heard of it, and we enjoy sharing both of our traditions. What is one of your favorite family Easter traditions? Happy Easter, everyone!
