From Daryl:
It's out! Sifting Through Clues, the 8th Cookbook Nook Mystery, is out today. To celebrate, I'm giving away a book today, including a choice of Sifting Through Clues! Winner picked Friday. Leave a comment below...
This savory scone recipe is in the book, but I have to share it here just in case you don't get the book. Even if you don't, please tell a friend or librarian.
I adore scones. They're so easy to make. And so tasty. The white pepper in this recipe gives them a real zing. They’re a perfect addition to any tea or breakfast. If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can use 2/3 cup milk, less one tablespoon plus 1 tablespoon vinegar. Let the mixture stand for about five minutes.

Forgive me for being brief...I'm doing lots of PR including a blog tour and giveaways on my Facebook page, etc., and I've got another deadline. Can you believe it? Busy, busy. But that's what authors do nowadays. Write and pitch, write and pitch. And eat. Luckily, we eat. And I bake.
Savory Cheddar Scone
(Makes 8)
2 1/2 cups flour
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 cup butter, cut into small pieces
3 large eggs, divided (2 for recipe, one for egg wash)
2/3 cup buttermilk
2/3 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1/4 cup chopped chives
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In a large bowl or food processor, whisk together the flour,
sugar, baking powder, salt, and white pepper. Cut in the butter. The mixture should be the size of peas.
In a small bowl, whisk 2 eggs with the buttermilk. Add to the flour mixture and stir until just
combined.
Stir in the cheddar and chives.
Turn the dough—it will be sticky—onto a well-floured board.
Knead gently. Divide the dough and roll each into a circle about 3/4-inch
thick. Cut each circle into 4 triangles.
In a small bowl, whisk the remaining egg. Brush the egg on
top of the scones.
Bake for 20 minutes until golden. Remove from oven and serve
warm.

The latest Cookbook Nook Mystery (#8), available in paperback and e-book.
What's it about?
Book clubs from all over have descended on Crystal Cove to
celebrate the library’s Book Club Bonanza week, and Jenna Hart has packed the
Cookbook Nook with juicy reads and tasty cookbooks. But she’s most excited about
spending an evening with the Mystery Mavens and their moveable feast, when they
will go from house to house to share different culinary treats and discuss the
whodunit they’re all reading. It’s all good food and fun for the savvy armchair
detectives, until one of the members of the group is found murdered at the last
stop on the tour.
As if that weren’t enough to spoil her appetite, Jenna discovers
that all the evidence points to her friend Pepper as being the guilty party.
And with Pepper’s chief-of-police daughter too close to the case to be
impartial, Jenna knows she’ll have to step in to help clear her friend’s name
before a bitter injustice sends her to jail. Sifting through the clues, Jenna
unearths any number of possible culprits, but she’ll have to cook up a new way
to catch the killer before Pepper’s goose is cooked.
Includes tasty sweet and savory recipes!

Sure would love to win - you write great books - thanks for the contest - trwilliams69(at)msn(dot)com
ReplyDeleteTaylor, thanks for stopping by. ~ Daryl
DeleteSometimes I pre-order books but it depends on what my bank account looks like. I'm retired on a fixed income now so I have to be careful with my money. It's difficult when I love to read so much! cornpeassmile-4atoutlookdotcom
ReplyDeleteDesdemona, I hope you'll mention my books to your librarian. I totally understand a fixed income. ~ Daryl
DeleteI love scones and have a great recipe for basic ones, but I've never been happy with my cheese scones, so I can't wait to try this recipe! And I'd love to win one of your books.
ReplyDeletePlumGaga, hope you enjoy these. ~ Daryl
DeleteI am a fan of this author and I would love to win!! lindaherold999(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteHi, Linda. Nice to see you chime in ~ Daryl
DeleteYes, I will pre-order books because if I can get them early all the better. I think the scones look delicious and am going to try this recipe. Thank you for it. Yes I would love to win your newest book.
ReplyDeleteHi. You didn't leave an email address. Hope you'll stop back to do so. ~ Daryl
DeleteI pre-order books if I'm getting e-books. If I have a bunch that are coming out in TP, I'll let my indie bookstore know so she can order them for me. But if they come out in mm paperback, I just wait for her to get them in the store, and she gives me first dibs on cozies. kkcochran (at) Hotmail (dot) com
ReplyDeleteKristin, love that you talk to and order from your indie bookstore! ~ Daryl
DeleteI preorder a lot. I’ve read most of your books. I miss the cheese shop family. suefoster109 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteSue, you've been a stalwart fan. I miss them, too. Sigh. ~ Daryl
DeleteI usually ask the library to get books. ckmbeg (at) gmail (dot) com
ReplyDeleteRiley, I'm thrilled when my fans ask their librarians for books. So helpful. ~ Daryl
DeleteI don't normally pre-order books, I don't really know why I don't. I usually wait until I'm ready to read them and then get them. smurphee@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteTeresa, that's very efficient. I pre-order and then they stack up on my TBR pile. :) ~ Daryl
DeleteI have not pre-ordered book, yet. The cookbook nook series has me changing my mind. Thank you for all the gluten-free recipes. Thank you for the opportunity to win your newest book. This series is great!
ReplyDeleteMadamhawk, you are more than welcome. I have lots of GF recipes in my books and on my website and here, on MLK. Enjoy. ~ Daryl
DeleteCongrats on the release! Depending on how my budget is holding up, I do a combination of pre-orders, purchases and the library. I just learned how easy it is to recommend a book to my library. Costco sometimes has a Kennsinara cheese (combination of gouda and parmesan) that would be delicious in those scones. Thanks for the giveaway. sallycootie(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteSally, Costco has some great deals on cheeses! I often buy big hunks there. ~ Daryl
DeleteI wait for the book to be out. I look forward to this treat and the book. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteTraveler, you're probably good at Christmas time, too, right? :) ~ Daryl
DeleteThese scones are enticing. Yummy and with tea just perfect. I will be reading your book as I wait until it is released. elliotbencan(at)hotmail(dot)com
ReplyDeletePetite, It is released. Yesterday. It's OUT. Available on Amazon and B&N and elsewhere in paper and e-book. Just not in a physical store... ~ Daryl
DeleteI've not had savory scones before. Looks good! I'm very erratic when it comes to pre-orders. I find I will pre-order some ebooks, some hardbacks. Others I just wait until they're out and then buy. Absolutely no order in my universe!
ReplyDeletepatdupuy@yahoo.com
Pat, I'm sort of like you. I try to pre-order, but then I forget and do it on the day of release ~ Daryl
DeleteCheddar scones sounds good right now as I am drinking coffee. I don't generally pre-order as I usually order enough in one visit for the free shipping. bluedawn95864 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteBonnie, free shipping is a boon, right? ~ Daryl
DeleteI do sometimes pre-order books for authors that I love to read. I do it more often if there is a special pre-order price that will go up after the book releases. 1cow0993(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteCarol, I agree that sometimes the pre-order price is better. It's a crap shoot, right? ~ Daryl
DeleteCongratulations on your new release. I don't usually pre order book. I usually go to the store and buy the book when it comes out. im2early4u(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteLeslie, FYI, this won't be "in" the bookstore. B&N can order it for you at their desk, but it's offered online. My publisher's plan of business. :) ~ Daryl
DeleteI pre-order a lot, especially if the price will be higher later. I’m on disability, so my budget is tight enough I have to keep a list of all of my pre-orders, so that I’m not surprised with an unexpected bank charge. So it depends on what my budget looks like that month—sometimes I even have to cancel a pre-order when money is too tight. I couldn’t pre-order this one, but I’ll be getting it ASAP—hopefully within a week. And this will be one I have to read right away, unlike some. I’ve really been looking forward to it. Legallyblonde1961@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteKara, I totally appreciate budget restrictions. ~ Daryl
DeleteI pre-order if the price is $7.99 or lower, mostly lower. My Barnes and Noble doesn't keep as many books on the shelves so I often come home and go online to get what I want. Pre-ordering helps avoid that.
ReplyDeleteBookstores have cut back, haven't they, Sally? I think so they can stock bestsellers. ~ Daryl
DeleteYes, I do pre-order books, especially from the authors that I really like. Scone recipe looks amazing, I've never had cheese scones before only sweet scones.
ReplyDeletediannekc8(at)gmail(dot)com
Dianne, savory scones are my favorite. Great with scrambled eggs. ~ Daryl
DeleteI pre-order print books based on my budget. I also put in purchase requests at my library.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe - love scones!
jtcgc at yahoo dot com
Taurus, you know I love libraries! :) ~ Daryl
DeleteThat scone looks really yummy. Sometimes I pre-order, but I usually prefer to wait until the book is already out.
ReplyDeleteturtle6422 at gmail dot com
Jana, gotcha. Sometimes I wait to read reviews. ~ Daryl
DeleteI don't preorder books because I don't have extra money in my budget for books. I wish I could. lkish77123 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteLinda, you are not alone in this regard. ~ Daryl
DeleteSometimes I pre-order favorite authors because I have a hard time waiting and I want the book “hot off the presses.”
ReplyDeleteGosh. Remember when they used to say that phrase? :) ~ Daryl
DeleteI don't usually pre-order books. I have ordered a few, if it is an author I just adore, and want to own the hard cover edition to place lovingly in my bookshelf after reading. Usually I put a book like that at the top of my Christmas list. At my age, there's few things I truly need, but my family, (who are avid readers, too), are always happy to buy me books as gifts.
ReplyDeleteI love savoury scones. My local bakery makes absolutely amazing cheddar and chive scones. I'll have to see if this recipe comes anywhere close.
Thanks for the give-away.
gnluciow(at)gmail(dot)com
Neena, I think giving a book is a wonderful gesture. ~ Daryl
DeleteI preorder for my favorite authors to show support.
