From Daryl:
Happy Halloween! NOT TOO SPOOKY GIVEAWAY BELOW!
Are you dressing up? Are you handing out candy? Are you one of those who hands out pennies or pencils?
I live on a hill so I don't get to see the kiddies out and about, but I do pay attention throughout the month because it seems people are dressing up in costumes during October. Or have styles changed that much? I mean, masks. I see lots of masks. And ghoulish clothes. And T-shirts with ghoulish logos. On the bright side, yesterday, I saw a little girl in a Minnie Mouse tee shirt and a red tutu. Adorable!
Just for fun, as I'm gearing up for the release of the 7th Cookbook Nook Mystery, WREATH BETWEEN THE LINES, I'm offering a giveaway today of a copy of the 3rd in the series -- Halloween themed with NO scary ghouls -- STIRRING THE PLOT. See below for more...
In a few secs, I'll share links to some of my previous Halloween recipes, but as we're on the cusp of November, I thought I'd share a bit of autumn deliciousness that you can enjoy for the next month or two. It's pear season.
Gluten-free German Pear Pancake
(serves 2)
2 eggs
1/4 cup GF flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 tablespoon sugar
1 pinch salt
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (gluten-free)
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup white sugar, divided
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 large pear, peeled, cored and sliced
* This will NOT puff up like a regular German Pancake. Sigh! If you use regular flour, it will. Your choice. It’s a simple flour swap one-for-one. Also, you won’t need to make sure the vanilla extract is gluten-free.
In a large bowl, blend eggs, gluten-free flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Gradually mix in milk, stirring constantly. Add vanilla, melted butter and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg. Let batter stand for 30 minutes or overnight.
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F
Melt 2 tablespoons butter in an 8-inch oven-proof skillet, brushing butter up on the sides of the pan. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg. Sprinkle half of the mixture over the butter. Line the pan with pear slices. Sprinkle remaining sugar mixture over apples. Place pan over medium-high heat until the mixture bubbles, then gently pour the batter mixture over the pears. (Just between you and me, if you stopped short of pouring in the batter, you could use those pears over ice cream as a dessert!)
Bake pancake in preheated oven for 10-12 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 degrees F and bake for 5-10 minutes. Slide pancake onto serving platter and cut into wedges.
If you have any leftovers, you can serve slices of this pancake at room temperature as a dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
**If you double the recipe, then make this in a 10-inch skillet, and bake for 12-15 minutes and after reducing heat, bake for 8-12 minutes more.
Serve with syrup if desired.

As promised, here are a few of my previous Halloween posts for goodies, if you're interested in a last minute surprise for your family or friends.

What a delectable recipe which is perfect for fall. My favorite costume was Anne of Green Gables whom I adore.saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteOh, fun! ~ Daryl
DeleteHappy Halloween! Gosh, favorite costume? I've seen so many good ones. I recently saw a video of kids folding up into cars. Very clever! bluedawn95864 at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI meant yours, but that one sounds cute! ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favorite costume was my first grade costume. My mother found a wedding gown and downsized it to fit me. Complete with veil, bouquet of roses from her garden and foil covered shoes, I was chosen as the best. When my children arrived I enjoy making their costumes too. One year my son was Uncle Sam and my daughter was the Statue of Liberty. Happy Halloween and thanks for the opportunity to enter your giveaway. robeader53(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteRobin, aw. ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favorite all time costume has to be when I was about 8 or 9 and I was hotdog - like bun with a wiener type hotdog. :) It was a bought costume and maybe that is why it stands out so in my mind since we usually made our costumes with what we could find around the house. I still smile when I think of me as a hotdog.
ReplyDeleteDo love seeing the kids, both young and older, in their Halloween attire. We live in the country with houses far apart so our trick or treaters are pretty much limited to those that really know us and know we will spoil them if they show up with lots of goodies. I don't buy bags of candy (so I won't eat them) but rather than cans of pop and regular sized treats that hubby likes. So we do get a few kiddos.
It's raining in our neck of the woods today with forecasts for it to continue through until tomorrow which may put a damper on a lot of treaters this year.
All the recipes sound so delicious. I've saved them and I'm sure I will try most if not all of them eventually.
Thank you for the wonderful chance to win a copy of "STIRRING THE PLOT". <3 Can't wait to get my hands on a copy of "Wreath between the Lines" too.

Kay, thanks. A hotdog sounds cute. Hopefully you had the whistle to go with it. LOL ~ Daryl
DeleteI personally never had a favorite costume. My favorite costume for my dog was a Geisha girl.
ReplyDeleteAnna, love it! ~ ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favorite costume was Snoopy. I made it myself. Even the little helmet he wears when he goes after the Red Baron. This cake looks wonderful. I just have to buy a bundt pan.
ReplyDeleteRiley, you don't need a bundt pan for this. Just a frying pan that can go in the oven. You could also use a cake pan for the oven and do the rest on the stovetop.
DeleteI love being a witch. I know it isn’t unique but it is my favorite. We don’t get trick or treaters. Our town has days of activities for the kids so that is what most go to. It gets dark very early here. It works out safer for the children. I do love seeing the costumes. Some people are amazingly creative and talented!
ReplyDeleteI love your recipes. I want to try the pancakes but I’m not big on pears. Would apple or peach slices work? I am making the pumpkin Brie later today. It looks so fun and festive!
Thank you for the opportunity!

Apples would work just fine! The classic German pancake is made with apples. ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favorite costume when I was young was a cowgirl. We found bits and pieces everywhere and the costume was very special for years. Your recipe looks enticing. Yum. elliotbencan(at)hotmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteYee-ha! ~ Daryl
DeleteI do not remember any of my costumes! Over the years, I have made everything from Peter Pan to Raggedy Ann for my daughters! I do miss making costumes.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the book giveaway.

Oh, what fun. Love Peter Pan! ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favorite was a monarch butterfly costume my mom made for me. Happy Halloween! turtle6422(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteHow pretty. ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favorite costume was the one that my son, Ben, wore. He is over 6 ft. tall and dressed as a woman. Looked good too, lol. Thank you for the giveaway. ringo_94@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteGood for him! ~ Daryl
DeleteLove your recipes, this came looks yummy. My favorite costumes are the ones my great granddaughter wears, she's only five. This year she's a ghost. annstanley1418@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteLittle kids in costumes are so fun. ~ Daryl
DeleteI have not had memorable costumes, so I will just say my 6 year old one, Jane Jetson. I loved it!
ReplyDeletebrowninggloria@ hotmail.com
So fun! Loved the Jetsons. ~ Daryl
DeleteThanks for the recipe. The cake looks delicious. My favorite Halloween costume was Little Red Riding Hood. im2early4u(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteI was Red in kindergarten. ~ Daryl
DeleteHappy Halloween! Yummy looking goodies, thanks for the recipes and the giveaway. Although I didn't appreciate it at the time, my mom used to make costumes for my sister and I - one year I was Little Bo Peep complete with crook and my sister was Little Red Riding Hood, complete with a basket of cookies Very pretty dresses and bonnets. My favorite, though, was Carmen Miranda with a bowl of fruit on my head!
ReplyDeletesallycootie(at)gmail(dot)com
How sweet. Love Carmen Miranda. Such a balancing act. ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favorite costume was dressing up as a gypsy. It was always fun wearing the colorful layers of clothing, lots of make up and big dangling layers of jewelry. bmalic610@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI still dress up as a gypsy. So easy if you have colorful clothing. ~ Daryl
DeleteI dressed as a gypsy. I put a lot of effort into getting the look just right and it was so cold out. I refused to wear a coat as no one would know what I was, I did give in and wear gloves. Thank you for this chance. pgenest57(at)aol(dot)com
ReplyDeleteAs I said above, I adore gypsies. ~ Daryl
DeleteHow fun to have a giveaway *and* scrumptious recipes. Thank you! Normally we live in a mountain community and can hand out homemade treats. The year we gave out popcorn balls (the treat my folks were famous for, at least in our 1950s + 1960s neighborhood) was a blast. Of course we had bits of sticky popcorn everywhere for months afterward, but it’s still a favorite memory. This year my husband is in assisted living and I’m staying with him, so no trick or treaters for us.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Halloween costume is the one my mom made for me when I was five - a fabulous devil costume, complete with a long tail I loved swirling around. Happy Halloween to all of us!
Oh, a 5-year-old devil? Marvelous! ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favorite costume was my husband dressed up in one of my maternity dresses (with pillow), a wig, and makeup.
ReplyDeleteLOL ~ Daryl
Deletea Tweety Bird costume my sister made
ReplyDeletejtcgc at yahoo dot com
Bet the puddy-tat loved that. ~ Daryl
DeleteMy BFF's son just came over with his eight month old daughter and she was dressed as a gumball machine. She had on a hat decorated with gumball shaped ball and and red shirt with 25 cents on the front. She was so cute!
ReplyDeletediannekc8(at)gmail(dot)com
Hysterical! ~ Daryl
DeleteWhen my daughter was little I made her a clown costume and she was so cute! That was my favorite costume she ever had.
ReplyDeletefaithdcreech at gmail dot com
I adore clowns. Not everyone does. :) ~ Daryl
DeleteMine was when I was working. I went as a computer virus
ReplyDelete1cow0993(at)gmail(dot)
OK, spill. How did you create that? Sounds so clever. ~ Daryl
DeleteDon't think I've had a favorite costume. Children in our neighborhood go to parties rather than trick-or-treating. If I could have the perfect costume, it would be a Garfield or Odie - none of the scary stuff for me! Would love to read this book, great cover! jeaniedannheim(at)ymail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteLove both of those cats. ~ Daryl

ReplyDeleteThe year my brother helped me make a robot costume and he dressed up as a woman.
ReplyDeletekkat.edwards(at)gmail(dot)com
Fun! I adore robots. They might not adore me, but I adore them. ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favorite costume was my son as Peter Pan.
ReplyDeletelkish77123 at gmail dot com
My favorite was when I went as a bag of Brach's Jelly Beans. A clear garbage bag, inflated balloons, the Brach's logo inside of bag. I told everyone I was the ghost of multi millionaire heiress Helen Brach who mysteriously went missing in the late 70's. I guess I always loved murder mysteries!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway. nschwenkner (at) gmail (dot) com
ReplyDeleteMy favorite was when my daughter dressed up as a ghost. Just a white sheet with eyeholes. It was so simple, it was unexpected and it made everyone happy.
ReplyDeleteWendy

You have to be older, like me, or a fan of movies from the 1940's to remember this character. My mother dressed me as Carmen Miranda. Used parts of one of my cousins dance costumes. Had pants with sequins down the side, and a rumba shirt with the sleeves that were one ruffle after another all the way down. The actress always wore something like a turban on her head with piles of fruit or flowers on the top. My teacher took me to all the classes to show my costume to the other teachers. patwalkerp(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteHow odd, I don't see my comment from yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI made sure to pass this recipe on to a severely gluten intolerant friend. She thinks this sound delicious.

Libby, interestingly enough, by posting again, you won this giveaway by random selection! (I'll go see what might have happened to your post). In the meantime, I'll email you for your info. Congrats and tell your friend. Being gluten-intolerant is tough, but when managed properly, there are lots of tasty treats. ~ Daryl
DeleteMy Jr. High Beatnik costume I made, simple but fun!
ReplyDeleteCute. ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favorite costume is when I dressed as a pirate for work - many people did not recognize me, as the costume hid that I was a female - trwilliams 69 at msn dot com
ReplyDeleteWhat fun. ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favorite costume was a black cat costume that my mom sewed for me when I was a kid. It was great!
ReplyDeleteI don't want to win since I already have the book.
We all love kitty cats. ~ Daryl
DeleteMy favourite was one I made - a roll of lifesavers. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeletelhallson(at)shaw(dot)ca
When I was growing up my mom sewed all my costumes. My favorite was a gorgeous, blue taffeta princess. I remember not wanting to take it off after trick-or-treating!
