Happy Halloween! NOT TOO SPOOKY GIVEAWAY BELOW!
Are you dressing up? Are you handing out candy? Are you one of those who hands out pennies or pencils?
I live on a hill so I don't get to see the kiddies out and about, but I do pay attention throughout the month because it seems people are dressing up in costumes during October. Or have styles changed that much? I mean, masks. I see lots of masks. And ghoulish clothes. And T-shirts with ghoulish logos. On the bright side, yesterday, I saw a little girl in a Minnie Mouse tee shirt and a red tutu. Adorable!
Just for fun, as I'm gearing up for the release of the 7th Cookbook Nook Mystery, WREATH BETWEEN THE LINES, I'm offering a giveaway today of a copy of the 3rd in the series -- Halloween themed with NO scary ghouls -- STIRRING THE PLOT. See below for more...
In a few secs, I'll share links to some of my previous Halloween recipes, but as we're on the cusp of November, I thought I'd share a bit of autumn deliciousness that you can enjoy for the next month or two. It's pear season.
Gluten-free German Pear Pancake
(serves 2)
2 eggs
1/4 cup GF flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 tablespoon sugar
1 pinch salt
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (gluten-free)
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup white sugar, divided
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 large pear, peeled, cored and sliced
* This will NOT puff up like a regular German Pancake. Sigh! If you use regular flour, it will. Your choice. It’s a simple flour swap one-for-one. Also, you won’t need to make sure the vanilla extract is gluten-free.
In a large bowl, blend eggs, gluten-free flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Gradually mix in milk, stirring constantly. Add vanilla, melted butter and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg. Let batter stand for 30 minutes or overnight.
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F
Melt 2 tablespoons butter in an 8-inch oven-proof skillet, brushing butter up on the sides of the pan. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg. Sprinkle half of the mixture over the butter. Line the pan with pear slices. Sprinkle remaining sugar mixture over apples. Place pan over medium-high heat until the mixture bubbles, then gently pour the batter mixture over the pears. (Just between you and me, if you stopped short of pouring in the batter, you could use those pears over ice cream as a dessert!)
Bake pancake in preheated oven for 10-12 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 degrees F and bake for 5-10 minutes. Slide pancake onto serving platter and cut into wedges.
If you have any leftovers, you can serve slices of this pancake at room temperature as a dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
**If you double the recipe, then make this in a 10-inch skillet, and bake for 12-15 minutes and after reducing heat, bake for 8-12 minutes more.
Serve with syrup if desired.

DeleteMy favorite costume was my first grade costume. My mother found a wedding gown and downsized it to fit me. Complete with veil, bouquet of roses from her garden and foil covered shoes, I was chosen as the best. When my children arrived I enjoy making their costumes too. DeleteMy favorite all time costume has to be when I was about 8 or 9 and I was hotdog - like bun with a wiener type hotdog. :) It was a bought costume and maybe that is why it stands out so in my mind since we usually made our costumes with what we could find around the house. I still smile when I think of me as a hotdog.
ReplyDeleteDo love seeing the kids, both young and older, in their Halloween attire. We live in the country with houses far apart so our trick or treaters are pretty much limited to those that really know us and know we will spoil them if they show up with lots of goodies. I don't buy bags of candy (so I won't eat them) but rather than cans of pop and regular sized treats that hubby likes. So we do get a few kiddos.
It's raining in our neck of the woods today with forecasts for it to continue through until tomorrow which may put a damper on a lot of treaters this year.
All the recipes sound so delicious. I've saved them and I'm sure I will try most if not all of them eventually.

DeleteMy favorite costume was Snoopy. I made it myself. Even the little helmet he wears when he goes after the Red Baron. This cake looks wonderful. I just have to buy a bundt pan.
ReplyDeleteRiley, you don't need a bundt pan for this. Just a frying pan that can go in the oven. You could also use a cake pan for the oven and do the rest on the stovetop.
DeleteI love being a witch. I know it isn’t unique but it is my favorite. We don’t get trick or treaters. Our town has days of activities for the kids so that is what most go to. It gets dark very early here. It works out safer for the children. I do love seeing the costumes. Some people are amazingly creative and talented!

Although I didn't appreciate it at the time, my mom used to make costumes for my sister and I - one year I was Little Bo Peep complete with crook and my sister was Little Red Riding Hood, complete with a basket of cookies Very pretty dresses and bonnets. My favorite, though, was Carmen Miranda with a bowl of fruit on my head!

DeleteHow fun to have a giveaway *and* scrumptious recipes. Thank you! Normally we live in a mountain community and can hand out homemade treats. The year we gave out popcorn balls (the treat my folks were famous for, at least in our 1950s + 1960s neighborhood) was a blast. Of course we had bits of sticky popcorn everywhere for months afterward, but it’s still a favorite memory. This year my husband is in assisted living and I’m staying with him, so no trick or treaters for us.

My favorite was when I went as a bag of Brach's Jelly Beans. A clear garbage bag, inflated balloons, the Brach's logo inside of bag. I told everyone I was the ghost of multi millionaire heiress Helen Brach who mysteriously went missing in the late 70's. I guess I always loved murder mysteries!

You have to be older, like me, or a fan of movies from the 1940's to remember this character. My mother dressed me as Carmen Miranda. Used parts of one of my cousins dance costumes. Had pants with sequins down the side, and a rumba shirt with the sleeves that were one ruffle after another all the way down. The actress always wore something like a turban on her head with piles of fruit or flowers on the top. When I was growing up my mom sewed all my costumes. My favorite was a gorgeous, blue taffeta princess. I remember not wanting to take it off after trick-or-treating!
