It's almost that time of year again. The leaves are turning and your book club might be thinking about ghosts and things that go bump in the night! So today I'm offering THE GHOST AND MRS. MEWER, which takes place at Halloween. That's right! I'm giving away a copy to one person who leaves a comment below.
A team of ghost hunters arrive in Wagtail to investigate the local ghost stories for a TV show. They're particularly interested in a legend that centers around a deserted hotel. But to keep things honest, a ghost debunker is part of the show to expose any fast tricks they might pull.
I have to tell you that researching this story was fascinating. I come from a no nonsense family that absolutely did not believe in ghosts. That is, not until my father died. Every single one of us saw or heard him after his death. So it was particularly interesting to me to delve into fact versus fiction. By including a ghost debunker in the story, I was able to explore both sides of the question do ghosts exist?
I'm including some book club questions here to get the conversation started. I think questions one and two could fill the entire evening and result in some fascinating stories.
Book Club Questions for
THE GHOST AND MRS. MEWER
1. Do you believe in ghosts?
2. Have you ever seen, heard, or felt a ghost?
3. Have you ever taken part in a fake haunted house as a guest or a ghost?
4. Did Eva Chevalier expose some ghost hunting tricks you didn't know about?
5. How did you feel about Eva and her personal problems?
6. Do you have a cat? Would your cat have acted like Mrs. Mewer?
7. What was the spookiest moment in the book for you?
8. How did you feel about Mallory? Did your opinion change as you learned about her past?
9. Did you know who the killer was? Who did you suspect?
10. It has to be asked. What's your favorite Halloween treat?
It goes without saying that you're going to serve something at your book club meeting, so today I'm offering pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. These were so yummy that they started disappearing before I even frosted them. So if you're in a pinch, you can just dust some powdered sugar over them and they'll still be delish. But if my friend Betsy is coming, you'd better make the frosting. She claims "the cake is just there to hold the frosting." I bet some of you think so, too.
Krista's Pumpkin Cupcakes
with Cream Cheese Frosting
(makes 12 cupcakes)
Pumpkin Cupcakes
3/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspooon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
pinch of cloves
1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter (at room temperature)
1/2 cup dark brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup regular sugar
1 large egg
1/2 cup canned pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling)
1 teaspoon vanilla
Preheat oven to 350 and place cupcake papers in the pan.
Mix together the first seven ingredients in a bowl and mix well with a fork. Set aside.
Cream the butter with the sugars. Add the egg and beat well. Add the vanilla and pumpkin and beat. Slowly beat in the flour mixture until smooth. The batter will be thick.
Spoon the batter into the prepared pan, filling each well about 3/4 full. (I spoon some into each well, then go back and top them all off.)
Bake 16 minutes. (The number one complaint about cupcakes is that they're dry. Don't over-bake!)
Cool on a rack. Eat plain (at brunch, maybe?), dust with powdered sugar, or top with cream cheese frosting.
Cream Cheese Frosting
1 stick (8 tablespoons) butter, softened
6 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup powdered sugar
Beat the butter with the cream cheese. Add the vanilla and beat. Add the sugar 1/2 cup at a time, beating in between.

I love pumpkin and the old movie. At the notoriously haunted Black Swan Inn, I had a ghost apport my purse from one side of a locked door to the other side! The purse strap was still on the doorknob, but the purse itself was left hanging out in the hallway. sssusieq@hotmaildotcom
ReplyDeleteYum! Love anything with pumpkin. Fall is my favorite time of the year. I love this series. I would love to visit or even move to town where I could take my dog anywhere I went. Thanks for the chance to win.

ReplyDeleteI absolutely do believe in ghosts because we have one in our home! The house was built in 1847 and I hear noises all the time and of course I see nothing but I hear him! I swear I hear our porch door slam and think my husband is home from work... It he's not! Halloween is my favorite holiday and I can't wait to make these muffins and read your Halloween tale! Thanks so much for the chance to win it from you today!
ReplyDeletedblaser@windstream.net
I have been waiting to read this book. I love Halloween my favorite time of year. Love there recipe thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI do believe in ghosts one night while my husband was out of town i had put my stepson to bed and came out to the living room and I swore someone was sitting on my couch. I turned on all the lights and all the doors were locked and nothing scary. The recipe sounds so good I am going to print I think my husband would love those he doesn't like many sweets. Also so glad we moved out of there not long after that as i couldn't forget it.
ReplyDeleteI love the cover, the TV show name; Apparition Apprehenders, and Trixie and Twinkletoes look and have to be adorable!! I love a good ghost story and the fact that this death occurred at the site of another, oh my!! Yes,my family had an encounter..in our old childhood home we would hear someone walking the halls late at night. We thought it might be our Dad who was up late at times, but no it never was him. Never could figure it out, but it gave us chills and osmetimes woke us up at night! Now the house has a new owner and recently asked my niece, "Is this house haunted?!" Spooookie!! :) Thanks for the generous giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteoh_bother88@hotmail.com
Oh, my, this book sounds SO intriguing! Certainly adding it to my TBR list. Sounds like one or two of those delicious sounding cupcakes would be the perfect sustenance to enjoy while reading this tale!! bskts4unme@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious, and the book, punning on a favorite movie, intrigues. I usually like LESS icing, which was always great for my brother Dave, who would happily accept any extra icing he could get. Dave also liked burnt cookies, so we'd give him all of those. My sister used to burn some on purpose for him, and home ec. students would pass evidence of inattention out to him in the hall to destroy, leaving not a trace.
ReplyDeleteI have not read your books but now i am going to the book store love your kind of books

ReplyDeleteI totally belive in ghosts and know I have encountered a few. I would love to win this book...I need a great read for vacation the last week in October. After a "book mishap" on last year's vacation, the hubby won't let the kids or myself bring library books with us this year. I mean we only had to turn around and drive an hour and a half back to retrieve the book that one of the kids left in the restaurant...I am not sure what the big deal was but he was steamed. meaganab at yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteYes, I do believe in ghosts/spirits. I have always known they were around, but I did get to experience seeing my first one last year. It was in a cafeteria and it was one of the people who use to run it back in the day. It was so cool! My mom gets visited by them often. My grandma (dad's side) visited her one morning and told her to tell them (my dad and grandpa) that she was ok, then she was gone.

ReplyDeleteMy entire family are firm believers in ghosts. I am the lone skeptic. Although I have never had a ghostly visitor, I can't discount their existence
ReplyDeleteI am fine with never having seen a ghost!!!!!
My mom swore she saw my sister after she died. And, I dreamed about a conversation that we had, sitting at my dining room table, feet up and talking about things that happened after she died. Just catching her up on life. It was really quite nice. She died 35 years ago when she was 32 in a plane crash. But do I believe in ghost? No.

ReplyDeleteI love all your books but haven't read this one yet. I hope you choose me!
ReplyDeleteI love to watch true ghost stories on TV, such as Paranormal Witness and My Haunted House. I also collect books of true ghost stories and some I got when I traveled to Toronto, Williamsburg, VA, and Indianapolis (local history section).
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen anything weird except for a bath fizzy that jumped out of its container and landed on the floor. I had just opened the door and was one room away when I saw it. The only rational explanation I could come up with would be a mouse pushing the fizzy out, but then the whole cylinder would've fallen over, which didn't happen. The cats weren't around so they didn't do it.
I like the picture of you dressed up as a cat with your cat.

I forgot to say that I love pumpkin. Haven't had a pumpkin cupcake, but since I love pumpkin pie, I'm sure I'd be delighted with one or two (or more!).
