Baked French Toast with Apples!

ACK, the holidays are coming!
I don't know about you but I
love recipes that I can prep ahead
that give me breathing room for the
main event.

I've gotten variations of this
recipe from several people and it
is virtually impossible to mess
up. It is delicious and when you're
in a time crunch to prep the bird, ham
or tofu roast beast and all of the sides,
it's nice to have something that you made
the night before that you can pop into the
oven and get breakfast off of your hands.
I give you: Baked French Toast with Apples!

5 thick slices cinnamon bread
1/3 cup sugar
4 large eggs
4 egg whites
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons allspice
2 medium apples (sliced thin)
powdered sugar

Cut cinnamon bread into small chunks, place in a large bowl and set aside. In a another bowl, whisk together eggs, egg whites, vanilla and milk. Sprinkle sugar over bread and then add egg mixture. Stir in cinnamon and apples. Pour into a greased 13×9 baking dish and let sit in the fridge overnight. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake for 45 minutes or until set. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar. Serve with maple syrup.

Happy Insane Holiday Season, Everyone!

BUTTERCREAM BUMP OFF coming January 2011

  1. A recipe that can't be messed up sounds right up my alley right now! You're right--everything goes a little nutty this time of year and it's nice to have some delicious standbys. Thanks for sharing this one!

  2. Mmm.... Yum! I'm with Elizabeth. A recipe that can't be messed up? I'm in!
    Thanks, Jenn!

  4. I just spent an hour making freedom toast for my visiting nieces and nephews... used cookie cutters to make shapes (and no crusts). Yours looks so much better...

How do you think a 4 year old would like em though...

One more day and I become an empty nester again... bittersweet

  5. I make something very much like this, except not baked -- French toast with cooked apples, and it's delicious. Even picky eaters love it. This is nicer, though, because you can make it in advance. I'll have to try it!

  6. I have a very similar recipe that is one of 2 breakfast casseroles I make on Christmas morning! I'm going to add apples this year for sure, thanks for the great recipe.

  7. Ooooo! Yum-a-rooskie!! I know this would be a hit in our house. Will be making this ahead next month for sure. Thanks for sharing.
