Mystery Lovers Kitchen Celebrates 15 years of Eating and Writing!

Lucy, Peg, and Ellery

 LUCY BURDETTE:
Believe it or not—and we hardly can—our blog celebrates 15 years of life this summer! Fifteen years of writing and cooking and sharing all of that with you, our treasured readers! To celebrate, we thought you’d like to share a birthday celebration with us of course, but also with some of our distinguished alumna. We’ll have two days of MLK memories and stories, and two big giveaways. So do leave a comment today, and come back tomorrow for part two of our birthday celebration and leave another!

Today we’ll start with our alums. I rounded up as many as were available and asked them about a favorite memory or recipe from their days on the blog, and a sentence about what they’re writing now.

ELIZABETH SPANN CRAIG: I was a mom of young kids when I was a regular at the Kitchen. Cooking kid-friendly meals could become monotonous, but the Kitchen kept me from getting stuck in a rut. There was always warm camaraderie on the blog and terrific comments! My kids are grown and flown now, and I'm writing 4 active cozy series.

JULIE WILLIAMS FOR SHEILA CONNOLLY: When I think of my mother, I immediately remember her fresh apple cake. It's always a crowd-pleaser at potlucks, it stays moist for days as the glaze melds into the cake, and best of all it is very simple to make! Both my parents used to make this for all occasions, and now I make it too -- and sometimes just the glaze, to pour over a bowl of extra-decadent late-night vanilla ice cream. Try a fresh apple cake for the summer barbecue sweets table! I am currently writing a new play with music called Rich and Strange, which will be staged by Curious Theatre Branch in spring 2025. Come see it if you're a Chicago local! I also have a hardcover copy of my mom's final book, The Secret Staircase, to give away. I finished it for publication after she passed, so I think of it as a collaborative effort, though the characters and setting are all classic Sheila Connolly!

Krista and Daryl

KRISTA DAVIS
: It seems like yesterday when Daryl Wood Gerber and I approached Julie Hyzy about starting Mystery Lovers’ Kitchen. She was the first one on board. I’m thrilled that the blog continues to thrive and that so many talented authors are sharing their recipes.  I’m working on The Diva Poaches a Bad Egg. The Wagtail Murder Club with be released in February!

DARYL WOOD GERBER: I loved blogging on Mystery Lovers Kitchen and meeting all our regular readers. When I was first published, writing the Cheese Shop Mysteries as Avery Aames, I had such a blast sharing all the cheese-y recipes I was creating for the books: quiches, fondues, cheesecakes. I particularly liked offering tidbits about all the new cheeses I was tasting. Do you know I tasted over 1,000 cheeses while writing that series? Who knew when I started writing mysteries I’d have to be able to cook AND know cheese? It has been a delicious adventure. Daryl will give away A TWINKLE OF TROUBLE, book #5 in the Fairy Garden Mystery series.

ELLERY ADAMS: I can’t tell you how many amazing recipes I’ve discovered on Mystery Lovers Kitchen. One of Krista Davis’s cookie recipes became a family favorite and when my daughter went gluten-free, I found plenty of treats on the blog, thanks to Daryl Wood Gerber. Thanks for uniting so many writers and readers through words and food—two of the best things in life! I’m currently working on The Tattered Cover, Book 8 in The Secret, Book, and Scone Society series as well as a new fiction project that is not at all cozy.

TINA KASHIAN: I have many favorite memories from my time at Mystery Lovers’ Kitchen. I enjoyed connecting with new readers, and I loved meeting some readers and my fellow blog mates at Malice Domestic conferences. My favorite recipe was baklava. My Armenian parents owned a restaurant for thirty years and my mother was a talented Mediterranean cook. She’s passed away but I have her treasured recipe box and I shared many of her recipes on the blog, including the baklava recipe.

“Murder in the Air” just released. The anthology includes my short cozy story “A Contest Win to Die For” which features my Kebab Kitchen sleuth Lucy Berberian.

JENN MCKINLAY: Wow! As a founding member of MLK, this blows my mind. Congratulations to all the participants of this delicious blog. What an amazing achievement! I still make Julie Hyzy's walking tacos for my guys and Cleo Coyle taught me the art of the muffin top which has been invaluable for quick breakfasts! Keep on serving up the good stuff, chefs!

Sheila and MJ

MARY JANE MAFFINI AND VICTORIA ABBOTT: I am thrilled to be at this great party! I’ll never forget the close bonds forged during my years at Mystery Lovers Kitchen and the fun we had. I loved those smart women who created clever plots and dynamite endings one-handedly while casually whipping up souffles with the other.  It doesn’t get any better! For us, it was a family affair because for some years my daughter Victoria (of Victoria Abbott)  was part of it too.  Plus my husband was thrilled with the results on his plate and said so. Not only did he enjoy the many new recipes I tried but he liked those of my MLK friends. It spurred him to cook. From Peg Cochran he learned about mirepoix and he has been a dedicated soup maker ever since.  Win-win!  Thank you, MLK, present and past, for years of great recipes, for enduring friendships and for all those wonderful books.  But I cannot leave out the faithful readers and the commenters. The comments section always rocked and camaraderie blossomed with several commenters.  You know who you are!  Bon appétit, everyone.

Sheila Connolly: THE SECRET STAIRCASE

Jenn McKinlay: FONDANT FUMBLE

Mary Jane Maffini: DEATH PLANS A PERFECT TRIP

Krista Davis: THE DIVA GOES OVERBOARD

Ellery Adams: PAPER CUTS

Daryl Wood Gerber: A TWINKLE OF TROUBLE

Tina Kashian: HUMMUS AND HOMICIDE

Happy Thanksgiving!!

A Thanksgiving wish...

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

From all of us at Mystery Lovers Kitchen.

May you find laughter, joy and love in the coming season.
May you be adored by your loved ones.
May you adore them.
May you be healthy.
May your differences be resolved.
May you find a moment for a good cup of tea (or coffee, Cleo)
May you find time to read a chapter from one of your favorite books
(hopefully one of ours).
May you enjoy every moment of every meal.
The preparation, the presentation, the flavors, the aromas.

Here are some links to previous recipes over the past year that will be useful on Thanksgiving...just in case you don't have your menu in place. And if not for today, then refer to them during the next few weeks.

And may you all enjoy this sweet reminder of childhood:

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.
Love to all.

Avery

Win a prize! It's a wrap!

One of the things I love about
packing the dudes' lunch is using
their own creations on them.
Well, that, and filling their lunch bags
with plastic ants and rubber cockroaches,
but that's for another post -- sometime
around April Fool's Day I'm thinking!

This is my oldest son's recipe and
we make it at least once a week as
it doesn't end up being traded (see
Avery's post on Monday for more
clarification on that)!

I have discovered that pretty much anything
swaddled in a tortilla will be eaten. And the
dudes have a special preference for the
classic sharp cheddar and pepperoni burrito.

Mama loves it because it's easy peasy!

Take a tortilla and stuff it with shredded cheddar
and pepperoni chunks, fold the two sides in then start
at one end and roll it tight.

Then bag up some carrots and celery,
toss in an applesauce and a nice granola bar and
call it done! Oh, unless Halloween is lurking
around the corner and then you might want
to add a nice rubber bat. Bwa ha ha ha!

Now to win today's prize of two Range Kleen
10 oz GoGo insulated bowls with handy
folding spoon and fork accessories just
leave a comment below. Also, as any eight
or nine year old in the know will tell you,
the hip thing to have this year
is an armful of Silly Bandz. Since I'm
in Arizona, I'm throwing in a "rare"
(so the dudes tell me)
pack of Western Shape Silly Bandz,
because you just don't want to get
caught on the playground without!
And, yes, I did find them on sale at
the dollar store (because there is no
way Mama is paying five bucks for
a bunch of rubber bands that the
puppies will undoubtedly
find and eat, causing untold canine
gastric issues, but I digress...)!
LOL!

The winner will be announced
later today!

Good luck and good eating!

Cooking up a book trailer and some Moonlight Madness!

Okay, so I caught the book trailer bug.
Mostly, because my friend Cathy posted a picture
on facebook of her stint as the white witch from the
play version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
and every time I saw it, it made me laugh -- out
loud! She must have done a good job, because a
little girl saw her after the play and came up
and kicked her. Okay, I'm laughing again!

Anyhoo, when I was kicking around the idea of a book trailer
for SPRINKLE WITH MURDER, I knew I had to use that
photo of Cathy as my bridezilla. For those of you who
have already read SPRINKLE, you know who I'm talking
about. For those of you who haven't, check out the
trailer, if Cathy doesn't sell you on this character,
nothing will!

So without further ado, sit back and enjoy the first You Tube posting
by cpcksrmrdr (cupcakes are murder). That's my You Tube handle, dig it?

Is she perfect or what? Now you probably noticed the opening shot of the cupcake
in the
video. This is one of my favorites. It is Mel's Moonlight Madness Cupcake
and it's mentioned in SPRINKLE WITH MURDER, but I didn't include
a recipe in that book. It will be in the upcoming BUTTERCREAM BUMP OFF
(January 2011), but for those of
you who can't wait, I'm giving a sneak preview here.

Moonlight Madness Cupcakes:
A chocolate cupcake with vanilla
buttercream frosting rolled in shredded
coconut and topped with an unwrapped
Hersey’s Kiss.
Ingredients:
1 ½ cups flour
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa
1 ½ cups sugar
1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
¾ teaspoon baking powder
¾ teaspoon salt
2 eggs, room temperature
¾ cup milk
3 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¾ cup water, warm
1 bag shredded coconut, sweetened
Preheat oven to 350. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, sugar,
baking soda, baking powder and salt. Add eggs, milk, oil, extract and water.
Beat on medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth, scraping the sides of
the bowl as needed. Scoop into paper lined cupcake pans and bake for 20 minutes,
until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Makes 18.
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened
1 tspn vanilla extract
4 cups confectioner's sugar
2-3 tbspns milk, or whipping cream

Directions:
In a large bowl, cream butter and vanilla. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Scrape sides of bowl often. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. For best results, keep icing in refrigerator when not in use. This icing can be stored up to 2 weeks. Rewhip before using. Makes 3 cups of icing.
To finish the Moonlight Madness Cupcakes, spread a generous amount of the vanilla
buttercream frosting on top of the cupcake with a rubber spatula, then roll the top of
the cupcake in a bowl of shredded coconut before the frosting dries so the coconut
will adhere to the frosting. Top with an unwrapped Hersey’s Kiss.

Wok this way!

Hub and I love to wok out together!
Okay, I'll stop now. I wouldn't want
my post to be too much wok. Okay,
really I'm stopping...now.
Seriously, one of our favorite kitchen
toys is our wok. You just can't go wrong
with it when you need a quick and nutritious
meal
for the family. This is a stir fry recipe the
Hub impressed us with the other day.

Ingredients

4 boneless skinless chicken breasts

3 tablespoons cornstarch

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

3 tablespoons sesame oil

2 cups diced veggies (he used carrots, onions and red peppers)

1 cup water

1 teaspoon chicken bouillon granules

Chopped fresh cilantro

Directions

Cut chicken into 1-inch chunks; place in a plastic bag. Add cornstarch and toss to

coat. Combine soy sauce, ginger and garlic powder; add to bag and shake well.

Refrigerate for 30 minutes. In a large wok, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over med-hi

heat; stir-fry chicken about 3-5 minutes. Remove and keep warm. Add remaining

oil; stir- fry veggies for 4-5 minutes or until crisp-tender. Add water and bouillon.

Return chicken to pan. Cook and stir until thick and bubbly. Serve over rice,

sprinkle with chopped cilantro.

Take a wok on the wild side...;-)

Arizona Sunshine Pie

One of the many wonderful things about
living in Arizona is the plentiful citrus trees.
Just about everyone has either a grapefruit,
lemon, lime or orange tree in their yard.
I have peach, pomegranate and plum (but
that's because I like a challenge). I am
planning to put both a lemon and a lime
in my yard, but until then, I have plenty
of friends with overloaded citrus trees,
looking to off load their abundance onto
me. I say, "Bring it!" There is nothing
as wonderful as home grown fruit fresh
off the tree!

Here is one of my favorite recipes
(my neighbor made it for us and shared
the recipe) Thanks, Linda!

I just love it, because not only is it tasty but it
uses the WHOLE lemon. Yup, rind and all!
Talk about not letting your fruit
go to waste. And even better than
that, it's EASY!

Arizona Sunshine Pie

Ingredients:
1 large lemon
4 eggs
1 stick butter, melted
1 tspn vanilla
1 ½ cups sugar
1 unbaked piecrust

Directions:
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Cut lemon into chunks leaving rind on.
Remove seeds. In a blender or food
processor, blend together lemon,
eggs, butter, vanilla and sugar until
mixture is smooth (should be
very watery). Pour into unbaked
pie crust. Bake at 350 degrees for
about 45 minutes. If crust becomes
too brown, cover edges with
foil and finish baking. Serve with
whipped cream!

Now, how often do you get to taste sunshine?
ENJOY!

Quick and easy comfort food.

Deadlines, carpool, more deadlines,
email, laundry, more deadlines,
voice mail, PTO events, oh, and
yeah, DINNER!
After almost eleven years of marriage,
the Hub can spot an incoming wife
meltdown at forty yards.

Luckily, when he says, "Don't worry about dinner,
I've got it," it does not mean something served from
a styrofoam box or carton or paper wrapper.
Hub brings out the comfort food and one of his
specialties is:

Garlic-Paprika Chicken.

Ingredients:

Chicken quarters (4-6)
Paprika
Garlic salt
Black pepper
Olive oil

Directions:
Wash the chicken quarters and pat dry.
Place the chicken meaty side up in a lightly oiled
13 X 9 X 2 baking dish.
Rub the chicken with more oil, then generously sprinkle
with garlic salt, paprika and black pepper.
Bake at 350 for one hour or until the juices run
clear. Does it get any easier or more delish than
this?

Mom always said, "Marry a
man who can cook." Was she
ever right! Enjoy!!!

Olive deviled eggs! (Get it? I love deviled eggs) LOL!

When I decided to make deviled eggs
for egg week, I made a major error.
I neglected to check the date on my
mayonaise jar!
Expired by a month -- EEP!
I did not have Julie's fabulous mayonaise
recipe (darn it) and so I had to scratch
my head and figure out how to punt.

What could I use in place of mayonaise?
I dug through my frig all the way to the
back. Ranch dressing? Hub gave me
bad face. Ricotta cheese? It just didn't
seem right. Then I found it! Eureka!
Cream cheese!

Knowing the cream cheese would be too thick, I knew I'd have to
add milk. Deviled eggs are sacred in my house, so this was a
big gamble. But I have to say, they turned out fabulously!

Ingredients
12 eggs
1/4 cup milk
1/2 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
Sliced jalapeno stuffed olives
Paprika

Directions
Place eggs in a large saucepan and cover with cold water.
Bring water to a boil and immediately remove from heat.
Cover and let eggs stand for 10 to 12 minutes. Place eggs
in ice water (helps to make the shells easy to remove).
When peeled, slice eggs in half lengthwise and remove yolks.
Place yolks in a medium bowl. Mash with fork and add milk.
Mix in the cream cheese then the onion. Fill the hollowed egg
whites generously with the egg yolk mixture. Sprinkle with
paprika and place a sliced olive on top.

As you can see, there are less
deviled eggs here than there
should be. This is because
as I was cooking, I had to taste
test, and when we discovered
that the cream cheese was delish,
the dudes all began to snitch.
I was lucky to get a picture at all!

HAVE AN EGGCELLENT WEEK!

The Hooligans' Sugar Cookie Recipe

This recipe belongs to my sons.
I
wrote it down exactly as it was told to me.
ENJOY!

Um, Santa, we can explain...

The Hooligans' Sugar Cookie Recipe

1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup butter (2 sticks) softened
1 egg
1 tablespoon vanilla
2 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
Decorating sugar

1: Wash your hands. We find that licking them works just as well.

2: Blend sugar and butter. You can use a fork but hands are more
fun for gushing the butter between your fingers.

3: Beat in vanilla and egg until fluffy. If you get into a tug of war over
the mixer with your brother, we've found you get enough fluffing action
without even turning it on.

4: Mix in flour and baking soda. This is a good opportunity to observe
how ghostlike you can make your appearance by covering yourself in
flour. It's also been known to make Mom scream, however, we're
unclear if it's from fright or the mess.

5: Divide the dough in half. We've noted that parental mediation is
occasionally required to discern what is exactly even.

6: Shape each half into a roll about 1 1/2 inches in diameter
(think snakes -- big ones)!

7: Wrap and refrigerate for one hour. A good way to time it is to keep
asking your mom if it's done yet (until her eyes roll back into her head)
then you know it's ready.

8: Cut into 1/4 inch slices and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Then sprinkle with decorating sugar. Our rule is a pinch for the cookie
and a pinch for us. If your mouth isn't circled by sugar sprinkles,
clearly you're not enjoying the process as much as you should.

9: Bake at 375 for 8 to 10 minutes until brown around the edges
(best to leave this step to a parental to avoid unnecessary
immolation of brother or self). Cool on wire rack.

Enjoy! But remember to save some for Santa!

Key Lime Pie: What a tart!

Congratulations, Julie, on your
Barry and Anthony Awards!
I'm thrilled for you!

In fact, I'm so tickled for you,
I baked you one of my favorites:

KEY LIME PIE!

Darn, you live too far away for me to deliver it. I'll just have
to eat it myself. The sacrifices I make!

Now we all have staples in our pantries -- flour, sugar and salt --
and in our refrigerator -- milk, butter and eggs. These are the things
we simply can not function without. Growing up in the Northeast, I
remember the emergency runs we made to stock up at the grocery store
when a blizzard (1978, anyone?) or hurricane was predicted. It could get
downright ugly in the canned section if supplies were running low!

Well, one of my staples is Nellie & Joe's Famous Lime Juice.
I use it on everything. Seriously, I can't even look at a fajita unless
it's been doused with Nellie & Joe's.

But my favorite recipe from Nellie & Joe's is the one
right on the back of the bottle for KEY LIME PIE.

Quite simply, it is:

9" graham cracker pie crust
14 oz. can of sweetened condensed milk
3 egg yolks (whites not used)
½ cup Nellie & Joe's Key West Lime Juice

Combine milk, egg yolks and lime juice. Blend until smooth.
Pour filling into pie crust and bake at 350º for 15 minutes.
Allow to stand 10 minutes before refrigerating. Just before
serving, top with freshly whipped cream, or meringue,
and garnish with lime slices.

Does it get any easier than that? Not likely. And let me tell
you, this is one sweet and tart fabulous pie.

You can see more lime-licious recipes at:
http://www.keylimejuice.com/
And I encourge you to consider adding
Nellie & Joe's to your list of staples.
I know if a blizzard ever hits Arizona,
I'll be relieved to have my Key Lime
juice in the frig!

Cupcakes for Grown-Ups (Featuring the Mojito)

Announcement: We will be holding a

Goldenbaum's
book. Just send us an email
or comment on
any of our blogs this week
to be entered in

Did you ever have anyone call you "cute"?
Usually, it's the high school guy you have a crush on
who thinks of you as his little sister because
you're still in middle school. What you
feel like doing is kicking him in the shins and
telling him "cute" is for puppies and kittens and cupcakes!
Yes, cupcakes. But of course, you don't do that. You turn bright
red and run home and cry into your pillow because the boy of your dreams
thinks you're "cute" instead of "hot" or a "babe". Then again, maybe this is
just me and perhaps I am sharing too much -- wouldn't be the first time.

But for those of you who have suffered the label "cute", I want you
to know I hear you! Now that you're an adult you're over it, way
over it, and now you don't want "cute" in your life. For instance,
you've had it with cutesy kid cupcakes that look like teddy bears or
clown heads. You want a cupcake with attitude, one that marries the
subtleties of adult flavors, like mint and lime, and makes you remember
that you're an adult...who loves cupcakes even though, yes, they are
awfully "cute".

In my first cupcake bakery mystery, SPRINKLE WITH MURDER,
Melanie Cooper, my main character, hosts a cooking class in
her bakery that features happy hour cupcakes. One of the
cupcakes that they bake is a personal favorite of mine,
the mojito cupcake.

The Mojito: A dense, golden cupcake flavored with lime zest and dried spearmint leaves and topped with a rum flavored icing.

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Sift all the dry stuff

together in a big bowl. Melt the butter and add

the beaten egg to it. Add that to the dry ingredients,

stirring in the milk until smooth. Zest half of a

lime, add it to the bowl. Squeeze in half of the lime

as well. Add the dried spearmint leaves to the batter,

mixing well. Bake for 16-20 minutes until they spring

back to the touch. Makes 12.

Rum buttercream:

  • 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine softened
  • 4 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon rum flavored extract
  • Mix all ingredients until fluffy
  • Garnish with a candied spearmint leaf, real mint leaf or lime wedge.

Sweet Potato Balls

Congratulations to Sally Minyard of Arizona!
Sally is the latest winner of our Williams-Sonoma
$25 gift card giveaway. We have one more gift
certificate to give away, so don't forget to enter
TODAY!

A 200 gram sweet potato contains 769%
of your daily vitamin A.
If your kids are like
mine, this is not a selling point. Neither is the

65% daily vitamin C count. In fact, this information

is greeted with as much enthusiasm as cleaning
their room, doing their homework, or shutting off

the television, but I digress.

Here's how I get my dudes to partake in my love
of sweet potatoes. Simply, boil these taters, mash them up and pack them
around a large marshmallow. Now they're reconsidering. Okay, so it's a little more
complicated than that, but you get the idea. Sweet Potato Balls are a wonderful way
to use this vitamin rich vegetable. Not only do my boys eat them, but they demand
seconds. Sadly, I can't do much about the other issues like cleaning and homework.
You're on you're own there.

Sweet Potato Balls

3 cups sweet potatoes, cooked and mashed

¼ cup butter

¾ cup brown sugar

2 tbspns milk

¼ tspn salt

1 tspn lemon zest

2 cups shredded coconut (or corn flakes

if you're not a coconut person)

Mix all of your ingredients (except coconut

or corn flakes), shape into a ball around a

large marshmallow, roll in coconut (or corn

flakes). Bake at 350 for 20 min.

Be sure to watch the oven for the last few

minutes of baking. The heat causes the

marshmallows to expand and they might explode.

The dudes love the element of danger in that

as well!

ENJOY!
