Grilled Bananas #recipe from Molly MacRae

Earlier this month, Ang Pompano shared his recipe for grilled melon. It looks amazing! It also made me realize that we hadn’t grilled bananas even once this summer. We probably wouldn’t fire up the grill just for bananas, but if we have the fire going, anyway, then the bananas take very little time to prepare and only add about five minutes to the total grilling.

This recipe is a team effort at our house. I get the bananas ready. Mike, my husband, is Mr. Grill. The result is a delicious scoopable dessert.

Grilled Bananas

Serves 4 (easily multiplied or divided)

Ingredients

2 bananas

1/4 cup brown sugar (a tablespoon per banana half)

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground ginger

Directions

Ready your grill so the coals are hot and glowing.

Remove any stickers from the bananas, cut off the stems, and wash the skins. Slice the bananas in half lengthwise, leaving the fruit in the skin.

In a small bowl, mix the sugar, cinnamon, and ginger. Spread a tablespoon of the mixture over the cut surface of each banana half.

Transfer the prepared banana halves to the grill – skin side down.

Depending on the heat of your fire, grill the bananas for about 5 minutes. Mike put the lid on the grill for several of those minutes. The bananas are ready when the sugar is melting and the fruit is soft and pulling away from the skin.

Lift the bananas carefully from the grill using a spatula (or two).

Serve the banana halves with spoons to scoop the warm, spicy, sugary fruit right from the skin. Yum!

  5. Molly, talk about campfire comfort food! As you said, I’ve grilled melon and a few other fruits, but never thought of bananas. Thanks for the recipe. I can almost smell that sugar and spice caramelizing over the coals!

  7. Thank you for the Grilled Bananas recipe! I'll be adding them to our next grill time - which is often.
It also reminded me of my mom's fried banana pies that I haven't made in some time. You take off the peel and slice length wise and often then in half. Place on a fried pie crust round leaving ample room for the sugar and butter - we just eyeball it as to how sweet you want it. Seal REAL good (or you will have a syrupy mess in your oil) and fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towel. Cool some to prevent burning your mouth. Great warm or room temperature. Never had any leftover to know about that. :)
