VMBURNS: In September, I attended the world mystery conference, Bouchercon 2025 in New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans is known for good food and I was not disappointed. I also found good cocktails. I had my first hurricane. It was delicious. So, of course I had to try to recreate the drink. I had most of the ingredients on hand, but passion fruit juice isn't in my normal routine. According to Goggle, a good substitute for passion fruit juice is guava juice (not big in my area of the South either). Another option is pineapple and orange. Basically, you want something citrusy. It was tasty and I will probably try it again with a citrus mixer I have at home. It was a good memory that I will take away from Bouchercon 2025 and my time in the Big Easy.

THE NEXT DEADLY CHAPTER
All Sam wanted was to make a good impression on her fiancĂ© Frank’s mother, the very proper Dr. Camilia Patterson. But when Nano Jo and the lively ladies of Shady Acres Retirement Village throw a surprise bridal shower for Sam at the Four Feathers Casino—watch out! Things spin out of control faster than a roulette wheel. Fortunately, Sam knows when to fold ’em and slips back to her room to work on her latest historical mystery set between the wars, in which a houseguest meets a grim end at an English country manor.
The morning after brings another rude surprise. Sam gets a frantic call from Camilia, who’s discovered a dead body in her room. Now winning over her soon-to-be mother-in-law means keeping the good doctor out of a potential scandal and attempting to discreetly solve a murder without ruffling any feathers. For that she’ll need the help of Nano Jo—not exactly the soul of discretion—Detective “Stinky” Pitt, and the ladies—because the casino killer keeps upping the ante. . .
I wanted to try a non-alcoholic version of Hurricane, but never got a chance.
ReplyDeleteDru Ann, You could do a fun mocktail version—just skip the rum and use extra juice, then top it off with a splash of ginger ale or club soda. I think it would still taste fruity and festive!
DeleteI agree with Ang. Skip the rum and add ginger ale.
DeleteI haven't had a Hurricane in years and now you're making me want to track down some passion fruit juice to make one at home! Thanks for the recipe for this fruity, fun cocktail, Valerie!
ReplyDeleteKim, I am excited to hear how it comes out if you do.
DeleteThe name (Hurricane), alone, makes the drink seem, deadly.
ReplyDeleteLOL - My sister said it had quite the kick. If it's too strong, try adding more passion fruit juice.
DeleteValerie, that looks delicious! A perfect way to bring a little New Orleans home.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly.
DeleteI didn't get the chance to have a Hurricane while at Bouchercon, but did have a Pimms Cup and a Sazerac!
ReplyDeleteCool. Did the Sazerac have Absinthe?
DeletePassion fruit is pretty unique/ Kind like other things, but not the same.
ReplyDeleteCheck the frozen fruit in the grocery store. You might find pssion fruit there.
PS A great source by mail is Aunty Lilikoi from Hawaii. (auntylilikoi.com) We get their passion fruit syrup to drizzle over fresh fruit salads. Even meh fruit sings with that added.
DeleteThanks for the tip, Libby. I will give that a try.
DeleteThis sounds good!
ReplyDeleteI love a good rum-based drink! Looks yummy!
