How to Make a Candy Apple Cocktail (with or without Spirits) for #Halloween by Cleo Coyle

Marc and I are celebrating Halloween with a fun, little cocktail that may not be scary, but it is wicked good! This Candy Apple drink has all the flavor and color of a good old candy apple. You can make it without alcohol or with spirits—an apt notion for Halloween.

However you mix it, we hope you'll drink with scary good joy!

Our drink recipe gives you great versatility. You choose your favorite ingredients and method of preparation:

* Make it a virgin drink (without alcohol) or spike it as much or as little as you like.

* Mi
x it by the glass, the pitcher, or even in a punch bowl. 

The pomegranate juice, added to the natural apple juice, provides good-for-you antioxidants--and a bloody good color for Halloween. Finally, have fun with the garnishes...

We like the idea of crusting the rim of each glass with cinnamon-sugar, which not only lends delicious flavor to each drink, but style to your service. 

You can slice an apple (through its equator) and slip the slice onto to the glass rim, as you would a lemon or lime slice. Or...

Try our idea of decorating the serving table using maraschino cherries on long skewers to mimic the look of candy apples.

Candy Apple Cocktail


2 parts apple juice, no sugar added
   (or chilled sparkling apple cider)

1 part pomegranate juice 

(optional) vodka or gin or white rum, to taste

(optional) cinnamon schnapps (such as Goldschlager), to taste

Maraschino cherries

Cinnamon sugar (*see method below)

Ice cubes


For a Candy Appletini: Spread a generous amount of your cinnamon sugar onto a flat plate. Moisten the rim of your martini glass and place it rim-side down into the plate of cinnamon sugar. Gently turn the glass until the rim is coated with the mixture.

Into a cocktail shaker, Mason jar, or pitcher, pour the apple juice, pomegranate juice, and the optional alcohol. Add ice cubes, stir well, and pour into your glass (or glasses), straining back the ice.  

For a Virgin Cocktail: Prepare any glass as described above by crusting the rim with cinnamon sugar. Fill about half the glass with the chilled sparkling apple cider. Add the chilled pomegranate juice. Stir gently to mix the liquids. Garnish with an apple slice or maraschino cherry on a wooden skewer and enjoy!

Making punch for a party: Follow the ingredient ratios above and spike it as much or as little as you like. Do not add ice to the punch bowl or pitcher, which will only water down the flavor of the drink. Instead, fill ice trays with the 2:1 ratio mix of apple juice and pomegranate juice and add those frozen apple-pom cubes to your punch bowl or pitcher to keep the drink tasting great for a longer period of time.

*How to Make Cinnamon Sugar: Mix 1/4 cup of white granulated with 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon. This is a basic ratio, but you can vary it, adding more or less cinnamon to your own taste.

Another great idea for a party is to make 
candy apples to serve or simply to decorate the table.

Tricks and Treats

I've been working on THE DIVA HAUNTS A HOUSE. Hmm, you didn't guess that it takes place at Halloween, did you?

There are so many fun recipes for Halloween. One of my favorites in THE DIVA HAUNTS A HOUSE is Chicken Scaryaki. But don't look for it just yet. It won't be out until next fall!

In the meantime, you can have fun playing with Hard-Boiled Monster Eyeballs. If you're a Southwestern food fanatic, substitute sour cream for the mayo, lime for the lemon, and add a dash or two of cumin.

They passed muster with my adult tasters. Mileage with children will depend on fussiness about certain ingredients. The good news is that they can be made earlier in the day. They still looked fairly good about six hours later.

Hard-Boiled Monster Eyeballs

6 hard-boiled eggs
1/2 an avocado
3 tablespoons mayonnaise
1/4 teaspoon lemon
3/4 teaspoon mustard (I used horseradish mustard)
1/2 teaspoon salt (really to taste, start with 1/4 teaspoon and add more if necessary)
3-4 olives (black or green, whatever you like)

1 drop ketchup
1 drop light corn syrup

Slice the eggs in half. Puree the egg yolks with the avocado, lemon, mustard, salt, and mayonnaise. Spoon into egg whites and smooth with your finger. Place a slice of olive in the middle of each.

Mix the ketchup with the corn syrup. Use a toothpick to draw lines on the "eyeballs." If you squiggle the lines, they'll look like blood, if you make them straight and uniform, they'll look like eyelashes, which might be less scary for very small children.

After all that hard work handing out candy, you might find that you need a little treat. (How cool is this picture? Why are black and white pictures scarier than color ones?) So I'm including two drinks to try. Make Julie's Bloody Shirley for the kids, but try a Green Ghoul or Night Rider Cider for the adults. The Green Ghoul is a spooky lime color, but quite sweet and fruity. Night Rider Cider packs a little kick. It's less sweet, but very refreshing. In the mood to play a trick? Peel a grape "eyeball" and drop it in the Night Rider Cider. It will disappear at the bottom of the drink and won't be visible until your victim has consumed nearly all of his drink. Bwahahahaha! Oh! Green Ghoul

Ginger Ale
Hypnotiq Liqueur

Pour a cup of Ginger Ale into a wineglass. Add two ounces of Hypotiq and one ounce of Cointreau. Stir and enjoy!

Night Rider Cider

Apple Cider
Goldschlager Cinnamon Schnapps Liqueur
Green Apple Vodka
grapes (optional)

Pour cold Apple Cider into an average size martini glass. Add one ounce of Goldschlager and one ounce of Green Apple Vodka. Stir and drop in one peeled grape.
