Peanut butter and bacon dog biscuit from author @DarylWoodGerber

Doggies need treats during the holidays, too!

I tried this recipe to see if I could make something that Sparky might like to eat once Iams stopped turning out his favorite biscuit. FYI, boo hiss on all companies that stop products that I like and "need."  Boo hiss!!

Okay, my rant is over. 😜

Now, Sparky is a picky eater. He only likes a few foods. And while he liked these, he wasn't gaga over them.  He really likes crunchy things, and these were soft. Maybe if I baked them longer, like a biscotti?

However, I gave the treats to my dog sitter, and she said her dogs polished them off in a few days. So do not let Sparky's finickiness or need for something crunchy fool you. These are good. Truthfully, what's not to like? Humans could eat them, too.  They aren't sweet. They are savory.

Wrap them up in little goodie bags to give as a holiday treat for the doggies in your life!

Gluten-free Peanut Butter – Bacon Dog Treats
(makes 60-70 cookies)

1 cup natural creamy peanut butter
3/4 cup 2% or nonfat milk
1 large egg
2 cups whole wheat flour* (gluten-free use:1 cup sweet rice flour; 1 cup potato flour)
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/3 cup rolled oats
2-3 strips cooked bacon, chopped

Preheat oven to 325°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, mix the peanut butter, milk, and egg together with a spatula. Add the flour (or gluten-free flour) and baking powder. Work the mixture with your hands. Add in the oats and bacon. The dough is thick and heavy. If you feel it is too dry and cannot hold together, add water 1/3 cup at a time. (I needed 2/3 cup.)

Form the mixture into two balls. Set one a piece of parchment paper. Pat as flat as you can. Top with another piece of parchment paper and roll with a rolling pin.  Cut into shapes. I simply did rectangles and made a few free-form circles. Set pieces onto one of the large baking sheets. Repeat with the second ball.  (Note: I did make a few free-form, without rolling, and they turned out more like a cookie than a dog biscuit.)

Bake for 14-16 minutes, or until very lightly browned. Remove from the oven and flip the treats. Return to the oven and bake the other side for 10-12 minutes more.Allow to cool completely before serving to your dog. Store at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. THESE MAY BE FROZEN: Put in frost-free bags and serve up to 2 months. Maybe be given frozen, if your dog likes that.

DON'T MISS MY "NEW" WEEKLY MONDAY BOOK GIVEAWAYS (a mixed bag of Cheese Shop, Cookbook Nook, and French Bistro) ON MY FACEBOOK AUTHOR PAGE. I'M TRYING THIS OUT UNTIL APRIL, SO PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO WIN!

Here's a bit about my latest book:

Mimi Rousseau is throwing the bistro’s first wedding—the nuptials of a famous talk show host. She is sure things will go awry when the bride’s father shows up drunk to the out-of-towners’ dinner. By the end of the evening, things look sweet again…until the next morning, when her benefactor is found dead at the bistro with an éclair stuffed in his mouth. All fingers point at Mimi, whose loan is forgiven if he dies. It’s up to her to éclair—er, clear—her name before the killer turns up the heat.

Praise:

"Talk about a culinary delight, this book is the pinnacle of deliciousness as I devoured all that was written in this exciting new series featuring Mimi and her friends." ~ Dru's Book Musings

"I have been looking forward to the book since I first saw the cover pop up on Facebook and it certainly exceeded my expectations. As a fan of the author’s Cheese Shop Mysteries and Cookbook Nook Mysteries, I knew the characters would be strong and the food descriptions would have my mouth watering and I was right." ~ Escape with Dollycas Blog

  1. Our dogs would love those treats! If it's edible and smells good they are always willing taste testers.maybe Sparky would enjoy dehydrated liver bits.

  2. I'm sure our Reg would love these! Our neighbor made homemade dog biscuits and said she'd leave some in our mailbox. My husband didn't know that. He went to get the mail and came back in eating one of the dog biscuits! He said that was the worst cookie he'd ever tasted! The dog, however, loved them.

  4. Peg, I have a similar story. A friend got a new batch of dried cat treats and left them in a bowl on the table. Her mother complained about the inferior snacks she'd gotten!

These sound like they would be rather tasty.

  9. Oh my! Will try these for sure. We have multiple dogs who will love these. Thanks for the gluten-free info. We try to be grain free and we are dedicated enough to feed the pets grain free pet food, too. Some of us are a bit fanatic about our diets...and our canine companions. Thanks!
