Pirate's Booty Fudge #recipe + FUDGING THE BOOKS #giveaway from author @DarylWoodGerber

Oh, hooray, great sales for FUDGING THE BOOKS! Thank you to anyone who helped by buying the book or telling a library or bookstore about it!

"Combining chocolate and pirates – what could go wrong?  Absolutely nothing.  I had a blast with this book from start to finish."

When I was writing Fudging the Books, I didn’t have a title, yet I knew I wanted to focus on chocolate.

No, I was NOT copying Krista, who also has a chocolate-themed book out this year. Usually, in the past, we have discussed themes, but this time around we didn’t! Luckily, our stories are not at all similar, and our recipes aren’t alike either. Krista’s THE DIVA STEALS A CHOCOLATE KISS is delicious, by the way. Don’t miss it.

Also, FYI, this book is NOT about real pirates. The event this week in Crystal Cove is Pirate Week, where people get to dress like pirates, talk like pirates, climb rock walls, watch Pirates of Penzance, and search for the missing pot of doubloons.  But no actual pillaging!

Anyway, back to the here and now.  I love fudge.  There’s something about the texture that is like no other candy. It melts in your mouth but has substance. And when you add all sorts of goodies into it, it’s a texture explosion.

For this recipe, I added some of my favorite treats: extra chips. You can add almost anything to chocolate and it’ll be good. Yes, even bacon…in moderation.

If you’re not into chips and/or nuts (per this recipe), add your own goodies, like extra marshmallows or chopped fruit. Booty means treasure.

Note, just in case you can’t eat gluten, make sure you find a gluten-free marshmallow cream or marshmallows, okay?

Arrr, matey! Wouldn’t want you ailin’, now, would we?

PSS This recipe makes a ton of fudge and it's thick if you use a 13 x 9 pan (see note below)!!! Plan to have friends nearby.

PIRATE BOOTY FUDGE

4 ½ cups sugar
1 12-ounce can evaporated milk
3 12-ounce packages dark chocolate chips
7 ounces marshmallow cream
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, melted
1 tablespoon vanilla
½ cup white chocolate chips
½ cup butterscotch chips
1 cups chopped nuts, if desired

Line a 13 x 9 pan with parchment paper (note: or to make this fudge "thinner", line one 13 x 9 pan AND one 8 x 8 pan.) Make sure the paper goes up and over the sides. Butter the parchment paper.

In a large saucepan, mix the sugar with the evaporated milk. Bring the mixture to a roiling boil and boil for 7 minutes, stirring often. Do NOT let it boil over the rim.

In a large mixing bowl, stir the chocolate chips, marshmallow cream, and melted butter together. Pour the hot sugar-milk mixture over the chocolate mixture. Stir well.

After the chocolate has melted, stir in the vanilla.

Pour the mixture into the prepared 13 x 9 dish (*and, if you want smaller "thinner" portions, pour a third of this mixture into an 8 x 8 pan).  Now, quickly top with the white chocolate chips and butterscotch chips, and add the chopped nuts, if desired. Press down.

I did half and half in this recipe.

Chill the pan in the refrigerator.

Just before the mixture is “firm,” cut the fudge into squares.  Chill again. Remove squares with a spatula. Place in candy wrappers, if desired. Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated.

*Marshmallow cream substitute: You can buy a bag of mini marshmallows, about 4 cups, and melt them in the microwave on medium for 1 minute.

    1. Libby, I think it's that it takes a long time to melt in the mouth! It's almost like wine, you get to move it around before it's all gone. Something. I'm not sure, but that's my two cents. It did travel well to bookstores, in case you are wondering. And I gave a block of it to my stepson to take to his staff at Disney. They loved it. So it does make good gifts! make it at the holidays so you can keep some for yourself.

We "test drive' the various recipes we collect from our favorite cozy writers on hapless guinea pigs (family). We each bring one or two of the ingredients and share lines from the book they come from. I told about you when I learned about you on Lind'as Chatting about Cozies. Haven't had the pleasure of reading yet (I have a backlog of books, usually would have read by now usually do about 3 a week, but been helping a friend at the rock museum so haven't had time these last 3 months. But her worker is recovering nicely and will be back at work the first of September. I have Friday and Sunday off. 59. I pass the books I get on to my daughter and granddaughter. They in turn pass them on to their friends. Your books do get around.
I have to try the fudge recipe. In the past I haven't had good luck with making fudge so hopefully this one will work. It's good even if it's runny.
    thanks.

  60. I share your great stories and recipes all the time with anyone who will listen to me - LOL! My granddaughter and I have made some of your recipes when she comes and does an overnighter -- she is going to love this fudge one. She and I are both dog lovers so we absolutely love Sparky -- thanks for sharing with us. jody.714@hotmail.com

  62. I have shared on Facebook, as well as loaned out my copy of Final Sentence to my mom and a few friends who are readers like myself. I can't wait to read Fudging the Books. It's on my tbr list. and slowly making it's way to the top. If I could get rid of the work and cleaning house thing, I could get a lot more books read. =)

  64. I've entered contests and probably shared things that way, such as on Facebook. I don't make fudge, just homemade brownies. I'm proud to be a chocoholic.

  66. I've shared lots of posts on fb about it. I'd like to try this fudge, but I've never been able to make fudge. It doesn't set for me. No matter what I do. Maybe I'll give the recipe and ingredients to my niece. She can make fudge. :)
