The Murder, She Barked Street Crew – Woof!

Buttercup, Queenie and Baron

Our mom is driving us nuts because she has a new book coming out one month from today. Oh sure, she still cooks our meals and walks with us, but she's spending way too much time at that annoying box on her desk. Of course, we're a little bit excited, too, because some of us are in the book! The character of Trixie is modeled after Buttercup. Gingersnap, the canine ambassador for the Sugar Maple Inn is based on Queenie. And our feline sister, Little Miss Sunshine (aka Sunny) led mom to the idea of the very nosy kitten, Twinkletoes. Trixie and Twinkletoes even made the cover. (Queenie is a little bit miffed about that.)

Some of mom's author friends have been talking about street crews. Sounds good to us. We like to get out and walk along the sidewalks. It's one of our favorite things to do. Mom tells us that street crews started in the 1990s as a grassroots method of promoting rappers. We know that's not true. Dogs and cats have been street crews for hundreds of years!

Today, street crews are fans who spread the word about books. Some of them even have signs on their cars to advertise books. So we've decided to be mom's street crew. And it has nothing to do with her threat that there will be no more treats if we don't help her get the word out. Besides, the whole idea of no treats makes us laugh hysterically. We don't tell mom, of course, but we know her better than that. No treats! Sure, like that will ever happen! Whahahahahahawoof!

So here's the deal. To celebrate the launch of mom's new series, we and our cat siblings are looking for dogs and cats to join our street crew. We're giving away Murder, She Barked bandanas to dogs and cats all month long at www.facebook.com/KristaDavisAuthor. One lucky dog or cat who leaves a comment here today (it’s okay if their people leave comments for them) will win one, too! Photos of winners (hopefully wearing their new Murder, She Barked bandanas) will be posted on mom's website and on a Pinterest board so your dogs and cats can share with their friends.

Twinkletoes tells us that we have to post a recipe, too. She recommends this one because it smelled so tasty, even though she didn't get any herself. She is very partial to fish. If it had taken longer to prepare, she might have managed to sneak a bite, but mom whipped it up in no time at all. We heard mom say something about it being healthier because it wasn't fried?

Quick & Easy Catfish Nuggets

1 pound catfish

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 teaspoons Chesapeake Bay Spice

1 12/ cups Panko breadcrumbs

Preheat oven to 400. Rinse catfish, dry with a paper towel, slice into nugget size pieces and toss into a large bowl. Pour the olive oil over the pieces. Using a large spoon, turn the pieces gently several times to coat with oil. Add the bay spice one teaspoon at a time, turning the fish each time to spread the spice around and cover the pieces. Add the Panko breadcrumbs and turn with the spoon until everything has a dusting of breadcrumbs. It won't be a thick coating.

Spread a sheet of parchment paper over a baking sheet or pan. Add the fish in a single layer, making sure they they aren't touching. Bake at 400 for 18 - 20 minutes.

Woof! Don't forget to leave a comment!

  2. Thanks for the great idea, Krista. I've been a nugget fan for years and these fish treats look like something I'd really love to...woof down. Catfish is a nice choice. It takes on other flavors and stays juicy and tender. Yum.

  3. Hi guys, let me say this is my 2nd attempt here, my first nice long chat got killed when Google failed. I am Miss PJ and I am a rescued Jack a Poo. My Mom said she did not care fhat I was 6 yrs old and sometime bit people. She knew I was scared not mean, and she was right. I have been here over 4 yrs now. Life is good. Mom reads a lot, I just sleep in her lap to keep her company. She makes me feel safe, I don't bite anymore, unless I think a man might hurt Mommy, then I warn them off until Mom says it's ok. I love life now, I hope all the animals find forever homes like I did. Shelter animals make the best pets, we are so happy to have a home. Well, send me a scarf and I will wear it proudly. Miss PJ
