I was thumbing through my grandmother’s recipe box, when I came across an easy-looking recipe for cheese bread.
Her recipe included poppy seed, which I decided to skip. I substituted Italian seasoning and garlic instead (because who doesn’t like a little garlic in their day?) :)
The bread was done in just 35 minutes and then it was time for the taste test. Pretty good, I thought. Then, suddenly, half the loaf had disappeared! Apparently I subconsciously decided it was even tastier than I’d thought.
At any rate, it’s a tasty, comfort-food-type bread that I whipped up in about five minutes—and it was only 35 minutes in the oven. I’ve got a name for those types of recipes—keepers!
Easy Cheese Bread
(Printer-friendly version)
2 1/2 cups commercial baking mix (like Bisquick)
1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar
1 t Italian seasoning
1/2 t garlic powder
1 cup milk
1 egg
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray a loaf pan with cooking spray. Mix the dry ingredients together (including the chees). Beat egg and milk together. Pour the egg mixture into the dry mixture. Stir until moistened. Scrape into greased loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until a knife comes out clean.
Quick, easy, delicious!

Yum. That sounds delicious...and easy. By "commercial baking mix"-that's like Bisquick, right? I might add some jalepenos....yummmmm again.
ReplyDeleteKatreader--I used Bisquick. :) Jalapenos would be delicious! I think bacon would, too.
ReplyDeleteI see a loaf of this in my very near future. thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis is comfort food for sure. I love cheesy bread and a good quick version is always nice. I think I will try bacon. Now my husband would say add pepperoni I might do both. Thanks as always for sharing Elizabeth. I will be looking for book 2 I have to see what Lulu is going to do next.

Ooh, this is great, Elizabeth! Love it when easy and delicious go together so well! By the way, *fabulous* cover for the next Memphis BBQ! Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis does look good. Kind of like a loaf version of the biscuits at Red Lobster. Yum!
ReplyDeleteElizabeth, looks great. And easy. Nice cover for the next book! Yay!

Sarita--Hope you'll enjoy it!
ReplyDelete~ Babs ~Pepperoni would be good, too! I think I might have to make a bacon version very soon because this loaf is now almost gone. :)
Julie--Very easy! And thanks! I like the cover, too. Wish I could take my laptop over to Lulu's BBQ restaurant and do some writing while I eat some BBQ!
Kay--You know, I didn't think about it, but it tastes a lot like the Red Lobster biscuits! Best served warm, for sure. :)
Avery--I thought you might like it, Avery--it's got cheese! I bet you could make a gluten-free version pretty easily (I know there are gluten-free mixes that I've seen.)
The cover for FINGER LICKIN' DEAD is fantastic, E/R, and I know the mystery inside will be, too. I can't wait to see it on those "new release" shelves (and in just a few weeks)!! Your Easy Cheese Bread looks delicious, and I had the same thought as Kaye. It’s close to a loaf version of the highly popular Red Lobster garlic-cheese biscuits. Sweet idea for family meals (as long as the cook doesn't eat half the loaf before dinner. :))

Nice cover, Elizabeth, and great recipe! I think any "ethnic" seasoning would be tasty in it. Yum.
ReplyDeleteCleo--I can't wait, either! :) Just got my copies of it today and they made me smile. Yeah, I sort of cut the rest of the family out of the equation when I ate most of the loaf...ha! I'll have to make them another one since it takes just NO time at all...
ReplyDeleteLynn--Good call! Yes, I think there would be a lot of different seasonings that would work out great with it. :)
Oooh, it looks like the cheesy biscuits at Red Lobster. When I go there I eat at least a basket of those darn things by myself!
ReplyDeleteHi Riley, bread sounds hmmmmmm. Can i post this recipe (or one of your choosing)on my blog/facebook etc and link it to your web/blog/facebook/publisher and to where people can buy your book? here is my blog for you to consider. Katie

Alleged Author--I do, too! And it hadn't occurred to me, but that is exactly what the loaf tastes like...the Red Lobster biscuits. And it really does take just a couple of minutes to throw together (because I'm really not much of a baker...and I didn't even think of this as baking!)
ReplyDeleteKatie--Oh, please do! :) If you want to shoot me an email, I'm elizabethspanncraig (at) gmail (dot) com.
It's a good thing I wasn't there or the other half would have disappeared, too!
