Do you love breakfast?

In honor of the writers' conference that I'll be attending this coming week, Bouchercon, I'd like to offer a free copy of The Long Quiche Goodbye to one of today's commenters. All you have to do is tell me what your favorite breakfast is and promise you'll tell one other person about the book.

And lest I forget...next week, we're having a fun Halloween-themed contest week. Yep, a week before so the fun little goodies we offer as daily prizes can get to winners before the end of the month. So tune in every day!

Ah, Breakfast!

I adore it. I can eat it in the morning, at lunch, and at dinner. We're not talking cereal. We're talking eggs. Scrambled, fried, omelets, frittatas. Add veggies and cheese and it's a well-balanced meal.

I will be traveling a lot in the next few weeks to a wedding, a conference, and a vacation (hear me jumping up and down with ecstasy over that one??), so breakfast is one of my staples. Easy to get on the road. Easy on the digestion. So tasty if you just add a little of this and a little of that.

Here's a quickie recipe that I'm squeezing in between flights.

Hope you enjoy.

Ingredients:

(serves one)

3 eggs

¼ cup sweet Vidalia onions, sliced thin

1 tablespoon butter

2 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, shredded

½ teaspoon each, salt and pepper

Directions:

Prepare: Whip the eggs in a mixing bowl.

Slice the onions.

Grate the cheese.

Heat butter in small 7-9 inch skillet. Saute onions on medium high for about 5 minutes, until tender. Turn up the heat. Pour the eggs onto the hot onions. Let sit for one minute, then start to stir with a spatula, scraping from the bottom and turning the eggs up and over the onions, so eggs and onions are incorproated. Sprinkle with seasonings. At the last, add the cheese and stir in without overcooking.

Serve piping hot.

By the way, in this picture there's a slice of corn bread. But this meal would also taste great with a cheddar cheese biscuit. Here's a link to another blog posted last year with that recipe.

  1. Happy travels, Avery! And you've made me ready to eat eggs this morning! I just happen to have a Vidalia onion and some Monterrey Jack cheese, too!

See you this week--when we can sample the cheeses of California!

  4. Dru, sounds like a yummy breakfast. Riley, isn't it fun when you have all the ingredients already in the fridge? And Sheila, it'll be fun! Remember, California cows are happy cows. :)

  6. I love breakfast, any time of the day. Especially when traveling. Have fond memories of the breakfast at the Excelsior Hotel in Jefferson, Texas. They serve their famous mini orange blossom muffins. The hotel is reputed to be haunted. It was a special place to my twin sister who passed away many years ago in 1983. I also love Cracker Barrell restaurant for breakfast. I am taken there every Grandparents day. Thanks for the yummy recipe and have a great week.

  7. Avery - THE LONG QUICHE GOODBYE is a delicious read and a great prize for a lucky commenter! Your question is so much fun, too: Some days I'll eat a breakfast burrito; others a quick poached egg. But the truth is - the very best breakfast I ever had was a fresh-baked butter croissant (served on a tiny hotel balcony near the Med in Nice) with a pot of hot coffee and fresh cream, all delivered on a beautiful tray. Oh, to go back there again. :)

    Cheers,

  10. Avery, I LOVE breakfast casserole. We have it on Christmas morning and my daughter says that if we didn't have it, she couldn't open her presents!! It smells sooo good cooking. It has bread, sausage, eggs, cheese, milk, butter and spices. I can fix it on Christmas Eve night (last thing I do that night) and put in the frig over night. Next morning, I just pop it in the oven and we get to smell the wonderful scents while we are opening presents. When we are done, the casserole is done and we get a great breakfast. I promise to tell lots of people about your book. (I already have!!!) :0) Jamie Gillespie (bentleyboy22@comcast.net)

  11. I grew up eating fried egg and bacon sandwiches for any meal. Fry the bacon crispy, then break the egg over it and cook on both sides, breaking the yolk. Add mayo, lettuce and tomatoes on toasted bread, and yum!

    Your recipe sounds awesome, too.

  12. My favorite breakfast is the buffet at our local Golden Corral (I know, I know, but this one is better than usual). Their banana bread french toast is to die for.

  16. My favorite breakfast is Eggs Benedict. Of course I only get this when on vacation, that is as long as we are not camping. I also love a good breakfast casserole, but when I tried it one year for Christmas breakfast I was told no more for Christmas, it has to be cinnamon buns.

  17. My mom's homemade flour tortillas with eggs and sausage. Just simple food, nothing crazy. Although once in awhile my mom makes this breakfast quiche-like thing that is to die for.

  21. I hate to say it but my favorite breakfast is a fruit smoothy, hashbrowns and an egg sandwich on english muffins. Way too many carbs but YUM!

I also like to make breakfast bars which are a modified chocolate chip cookie recipe - with much less sugar and healthy things like wheat germ and ground flax seed added.

  22. I have a recipe for breakfast rolls using canned crescent dinner rolls. Instead of unrolling the dough you cut it into slices. Found the recipe over 30 years ago when my oldest was just a baby and still make them for special occasions. These rolls are super easy to make and a favorite of my family and co-workers!

  23. Breakfast has ALWAYS been my favorite meal and I have a seriously hard time picking what's my favorite but I think, if forced at dinner knife point, I would choose beignets with a fresh cup of coffee at the Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans, followed by a fried oyster po'boy sandwich for lunch and the seafood platter at Landry's for dinner. Okay, now I have to go raid the fridge and see if I can find a snack! Nurse JudyMac

  31. Chocolate Gravy. Yes, Chocolate Gravy.
My grams from Arkansas makes it with homemade biscuits. It involves Hershey Powder, milk and other ingredients and she cooks it to a gravy-
And then butter the biscuits and pour on the gravy. Add some coffee and your grams and you have a treat!
