Cleo Coyle's Copycat Starbucks Frappuccino

Cleo Coyle, author of
The Coffeehouse Mysteries.

As this group blog's resident java maven, I thought a cold coffee drink would be the perfect menu offering for the week.

You may know this drink by any number of names:

Frappuccino is the most common. (Starbucks trademarked the term after buying the Coffee Connection chain in New England, which had previously trademarked it.) Or maybe you know the drink as a...

Coolatta (Dunkin' Donuts version) or...

Mochalatta (Cinnabon's version). Then there's the very latest entry into the coffee bar business: McDonald's. Their...

McCafe frozen coffee drink is simply listed on their menu as an Iced Vanilla Latte or Iced Mocha.

Behold the
Chilly Cleoccino!

Well, now it's time for me to whip up the drink that I introduced last summer on this blog, the Chilly Cleoccino!

Yes, it's my own easy (and smart) home version of this popular summer drink.

Why so smart?...

The typical first step in a drink like this is to make "double-strength" coffee. The reason is to keep the coffee flavor from being diluted by the additoin of ice. My solution? Don't use ice. Make ice out of your coffee. Even better, use your leftover Joe for this recipe.

The sticky, sweltering oven that has become our endless summer begs for something icy and delicious. Here's my cold medicine for these long, hot days...

Cleo's Copycat
Frappuccino

Serves:  This recipe will make one 8-ounce serving.
For a larger drink, or to serve more people, you can easily double,
triple, or quadruple it.

Ingredients:
1/3 cup coffee (makes about 4 coffee ice cubes)
1/3 cup milk (low fat is fine)
2 teaspoons sugar (more if you like sweeter drinks)
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
whipped cream (optional)

Fill an ice cube tray with leftover coffee. Freeze the tray. Remove four coffee ice cubes (per 8-ounce serving) and place in blender. Add milk, sugar, vanilla, and (optional) cocoa for a chocolate frappé. Pulse the blender to chop the coffee ice cubes into fine particles.

You can create an icy drink with very small ice chips (like a frozen margarita) or you can run the blender full speed until the mixture is completely liquefied yet still cold and frothy. The drink is delicious either way and a great use of your leftover Joe. To finish, pour this frozen refresher into a glass mug, top with whipped cream, and…

One last piece of advice:

Watch your CAT when he starts
to eyeball
your Copycat Frapp!

Or this may happen to you...

My cat Nemo and (what was)
my Cleoccino!

Drink (and read)
with joy!

  1. I absolutely love this--both the books and recipes! You've really got my attention with this recipe too--I'm going to have to try it. The photo of the cat licking the cream is absolutely delightful. My cat would do the same thing if she had the chance!

  2. I am SO GLAD my daughter (who is addicted to iced coffee drinks and her recipe for homemade frappucino *the one with double strength coffee* still resides on my refrigerator door) didn't think of this. She would have used my ice trays for coffee cubes and I would have had to kill her.

  3. :D this is so smart~ i cant wait to try this out with my new blender..ahaha...now i dont have to go to starbucks all the time for a frap~ thank youu~~

  4. Love the first shot of your cat eyeing the cup...

But I am confused... What is this mystery ingredient???

"Fill an ice cube tray with leftover coffee."

Not sure if I ever in my life didn't drain the pot and wish for more. That's it... Now I can justify a second pot this morning!!!

On an unrelated topic... I so appreciate your PDF option, and would like to add this to my blog. Do you have an easy tutorial on how you got that to work so well?

  8. Oh be still my heart. Cleo you have the perfect drink to beat this 100 degree weather we're having here in Georgia. I had to laugh when I saw your photos. Little One (in the photo) has to have whipped cream every night.

Congratulations on the upcoming release of ROAST MORTEM. I'm so looking forward to reading it.

  14. What a wonderful recipe. I gave up fancy coffees almost a year ago, but I'm going to have to try this one. And I'll have to hide it from my miniature Schnauzer, Pepper. She's a real coffee hound.

I think I'm going to have host a back to school book party and serve all the wonderful dishes from this week.

@ runner10 – TY for the nice words, especially given your lack of love for the bean. :)
@ Nancy – True, true. This is a recipe that would benefit from a fresh pot and full trays of same. Given the state of the economy, however, I think “waste not” is on everyone’s agenda!
@ Marilyn – Luckily, I stopped Nemo before he got to the actual caffeine! Catnip is more his speed anyway when it comes to…well, speed. :)
@ Lady_Graeye – Big thanks to you for the nice words about anticipating Roast Mortem. And thank you also for the kind note you left on Lesa’s blog. I hope you enjoy my latest Coffeehouse Mystery. Cheers to you!
@ h.lee – Whipped cream is Nemo’s weakness. Sounds like you have a cat with the same creamy cravings!
@ Thomas Andrew – TY for the nice words. By now, I can tell you that you did not win the cup, but I’ll be giving another away next Friday, so come on back now, y’hear?!
@ Wendy Lyn Watson – I’m sure Nemo would love plotting cream-stealing capers with your kitty. But that’s okay. As is probably obvious, I have a soft spot for bad kitties.
@ Wendy Wagner – Sounds like you and I would get along fine. To borrow a quotation from the French gastronome, Brillat-Savarin: A day without coffee is a day without sunshine. (I know, he said it about wine. But the bean’s the thing in our house, too.)
@ Lesa – Who does not love cats? Rhetorical question. Probably dog people. But I think most humans enjoy the fun frolicking of a furry feline. (Look out - alliteration overload! Duck!)
@ LSUReader – Thank you for your kind thoughts on the recipe. I do indeed find that swapping regular ice cubes for coffee ice cubes makes the drink frosty, potent, and very easy to prepare. (So sorry you are catless. I would share Nemo, but he tends to overcharge for outsourced companionship services. :)

@ Javadog70 – Incredibly kind words. So nice to know that you’re enjoying my recipes. Cheers to you – and your loft-jumpin’ kitty.
@ Cindy Waffles – TY for the cat flattery. Nemo now has a swelled head and believes he is an Internet star. I guess he is. But his litter box still stinks, lol. :)
@ booklover (nanc) – YES! You noticed! Nemo is indeed a polydactyl cat, one of a litter of NYC stray kittens that we adopted. The extra toes and very high intelligence make me think of him as a “furry monkey” at times.
@ Susan Parham – TY for the kitty compliments! Glad you like the recipe, too.
@ Grace – You and I are absolutely on the same page. No waste is a very good thing indeed and especially smart during these uncertain economic times.

@ Laineshots – Given the beautiful photography I’ve seen from you, your compliment on my little pics makes my day. Thank you. BTW - “Miss Sarah” is a great name for a cat. She should meet our “Mr. Fellows” – methinks they’d make a dynamic feline duo. You had a very good question about the recipe…

What’s my favorite coffee to use for this? Answer: a bold, dark roast – something that will really stand up to the addition of milk and flavorings. Espresso ice cubes work wonderfully for this recipe, as well. At home, I use a Bialetti Moka Express Pot to make my espressos. (BTW -Growing up in an Italian-American home, I never thought of espresso as trendy or upscale. An espresso was simply an old-world way of making a cuppa joe. We made it right there on our stovetop with a little Moka Express pot. As I said, I still make it that way. And when I want a crema-topped espresso, I go to my professional barista up the block. :)

Thanks for the great question, Laine!

@ Ashley – You are most welcome, and I hope you enjoy the recipe!
@ NiGeLa – Your kind words are much appreciated. And I’m thrilled that you noticed Nemo is a polydactyl cat! He’s another of my New York City stray rescues, and he’s really amazing – so smart, and with nearly-opposable thumbs, he’s more like a furry monkey! :)
@ Teri Ostenson – I hope you like the change. I really do like the ice cube method instead of the double-strength method. And using low fat milk is healthier and (to me, anyway) works just as well as full fat in this recipe because the real stars of the “flavor and texture” show here are the frozen coffee and the flavorings. Of course, a professional barista would use vanilla and chocolate coffee bar syrups (gourmet syrups are sold to coffeehouses by companies such as Torani, Monin, and DaVinci), but the vanilla extract and unsweetened cocoa work just fine instead, given the average kitchen pantry.
@ throughthehaze – Wonderful! Glad you’re going to try it and I hope you like it, too.
@ denise @ quickies on the dinner table – DENISE!! One of my favorite foodie bloggers. So great to see you stopping by. Things have been crazy for me but I’ve been applauding you from afar. Cheers to you and I hope your hubby likes, too.
@ Kat – well, if this Cleoccino is a “birthday treat,” then I’m deducing it’s your birthday on Saturday. (Doh, right? Brilliant sleuthing on my part.) HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GIRL!!!!
@ Libby – Right you are about the ingredient list on far too many fast food items. Better to *know* and be in control of what you’re eating, if you possibly can. Excellent point. YW for the recipe. May you drink it with joy!

    Cheers, everyone!
