VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE CELEBRITY CHEF!

Do you have a Favorite
Celebrity Chef?
Vote below and hit poll results to see how others have voted. If you don't see your favorite chef in the list below, you can vote "other" and leave a comment here or on my We
b site's messsage board at CoffeehouseMystery.com...

Read the post below the poll for links to
some of our favorite RECIPES!
and
hotlinks to "rock star"
chef tours (per Wall Street Journal).

Did you know that chef’s are the new rock stars? The Wall Street Journal declared it this week in a huge article. I laughed when I saw it because this is far from news to me. I made this point in fiction two years ago...

In my mystey French Pressed, the twenty-year-old daughter of my amateur sleuth (Clare Cosi) became completely infatuated with a “rock star” chef with whom she was interning--to her detriment since murder was involved.

The real news to me in the Journal article was the fact that these celebrity chefs are now going on live tours, just like rock stars. Click on the chef’s name below for more info. If they have a live appearance coming up, I hot linked to a place where you can find out more and order tickets. And I hope you enjoy my little vision of the Rock Star Chef Family Thanksgiving below...

CLEO'S CELEBRITY CHEF
FAMILY THANKSGIVING

(Just pretend I actually had an ounce of
artistic ability and drew the following
as a cartoon with little word balloons...)

Alton Brown (tour hotlink)

My brainy big brother“Pass the mashed potatoes, Alton. No, I don't actually need the metric conversion on that...but thanks.”

Guy Fieri (tour hotlink)
My wild and crazy little brother
“Holla, Guy! Did you know Jenn’s husband invented a salsa recipe with tequila? I thought you’d be impressed.”

Paula Deen (tour hotlink)

My funny, adorable auntie
“Oh, boy! Can we fry that too? And have you checked out Riley's baked Garlic Cheese Grits recipe (click here)?"

Tony Bourdain (tour hotlink)
The bad boy neighbor
“Gotta light, baby? You’ve inspired me to take up smoking again. Better yet, how about I mix you up a sexy Raspberry Lemon Drop martini a la Julie Hyzie?”

Emeril Lagasse (tour hotlink) My jolly, loveable uncle“After we go apple picking Saturday, can you show me how to make a brioche? I'll trade you Krista's recipe for Danish Apple Cake."

Rachel RayMy bubbly, adorable sister
“Tomorrow night! Popping popcorn in rosemary oil then drooling over Jason Statham in Transporter 6."

Giada De Laurentiis
My sweet but too-thin fashionista sister.
“I’m in for Black Friday. We’ll shop, dish, have a latte, and workout. But then you better eat something, sweetie, I’m worried about you. I know what you'll love--Avery's "Hungry Girl" bacon shrimp & cheese kabob, under 200 calories.”

Ina Garten
My down-to-earth, knowledgeable older sister
“Super, Ina, one last thing? How long do you braise the beef in red wine?”

Tyler FlorenceThe cute boy next door“Hi Tyler, can I borrow a cup of sugar? And that tagine of lamb you just took out of the oven? Thanks! I'll swap you my own recipe for holiday pernil: Puerto Rican Style Roasted Pork Shoulder.”

Gordon Ramsay
The hot English neighbor

“Thumbs up on the real gravy and Yorkshire pudding, Gordo, but you’ve just got to stop with the farm animal butchery segments.” (And if you’ve never seen this man’s BBC show, The F Word, forget you just read that.)

So who is your favorite rock star chef? Take the poll at the top of the blog and then click to see the results and find out what your fellow Mystery Lovers' Kitchen fans think. If I've missed your favorite chef, just write him (or her) in -- you can add a comment below or hop over to the Message Board at my Web site http://www.coffeehousemystery.com/.

Cheers!

  1. I'm liking your celebrity family, Cleo! My mind boggles at the kind of fantastic Thanksgiving dinner they'd serve up. I noticed you very wisely refrained from having a celebrity hubby. :)

  5. Actually, my addiction is cooking competition shows: Top Chef, the Next Iron Chef, Next Food Network Star, etc. I love those and I'm always looking for a new one.

  6. My husband and I like to watch Top Chef and Next Iron Chef type shows, too. Such drama. Your post makes me think of the great movie: Who's Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?

Who's going to be the next celebrity rock star chef? Uh-oh. Dah, dah, dah, daaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

  7. Elizabeth & Kaye - LOL on the "mystery" of not naming a husband among the male chefs. That's an easy one to answer: I'm already married to an excellent, hunky chef! (Not a culinary school grad, but he has worked in a pro kitchen. So Marc always gets my vote.)

  8. Dru - Oh, I love Tyler, too! He's among my very favorite celeb chefs. Real cooking chops. We've linked to his site in our blogroll and I try to attend his Live Twitter cooking sessions.

I wish I were joining you at the Metro Cooking Show in Washington! Have a great time, and stop back to let us know how you enjoyed it - either here or on my www.CoffeeehouseMystery.com Message Board - I'd love to know...

  9. Julie - Alton is the greatest. I just love how he owns the Food Geek persona. I came across a hilarious YouTube parody of his show. Click this link ( Alton Brown YouTube Parody ) to see a wannabe Alton in the making! If you love Alton, you'll love this...

  10. Janet & Avery - Top Chef and The Next Food Network Star are a lot of fun to watch. Even the high profile foodie bloggers in NYC get into handicapping finalists - and (full disclosure) the "Iron Chef" idea has inspired THIS blog to do a secret ingredient week. Stay tuned!

  11. Cleo-

This is inspired! Truly!!! It's virtually impossible to pick one, but if I could it'd be Paula Deen. She took the spot in my heart formerly held by the Two Fat Ladies. Gosh, I loved them. Currently, I'm addicted to Smackdown with Bobby Flay. He won me over with a cupcake smackdown, featuring a gingerbread cupcake with carmelized mango buttercream. WOW!

  12. Great group....I really had a hard time choosing..there were several of my favorites there. Can't wait to win the coffee so I can enjoy it while I read the latest mystery.

  13. I do love Tyler Florence, but had to vote for "other," my super-favorite, total doll of a chef, Jamie Oliver. Sigh... I have such a crush on him!

And while I love that chefs have gotten so much great attention over the past few years, "real" chefs still have it really tough: horrible work hours, crummy pay, and often little acknowledgment for what they do. (Take from a chef wife!) Owners take a lot of credit when a restaurant gets a good review, and chefs get the blame when things don't go well. It's a rough world! But I'm happy to see how loved chefs are these days and hopefully this will translate into the real world soon....!

  14. Oh my, I remember when the Food Network was just a fledgling cable station! I love watching Ina and Giada, they make everything look so easy and elegant.

  15. What a fun post, Cleo! I can't wait to see your results. I'm such a sucker for Top Chef and The Next Food Network Star. Never miss them!

  16. Jenn - The Two Fat Ladies are/were awesome. And that Flay cupcake sounds off-the-hook!

Tina - I'm thrilled to see "Tutu" has stopped by our blog! Welcome back from Italy. I trust you had a few good meals, LOL. Good luck on winning our excellent coffee.

Jessica - Gourmet Girl is in the House! And I completely respect your Chef-Wife situation. Great points all. I too believe Jamie Oliver is a cutie and one of the best chefs on TV. (I can also testify that he's a very nice guy in person. My husband crossed paths with him in the aisles of New York's Strand Bookstore of all places, they chatted, and he was very kind.)

Janel - I'm so glad you said that about watching Food Network when it was just a fledgling station. I was a very early Food Network watcher, too, and I still remember watching Emeril regularly, before anyone knew who he was. I tried to explain "Bam!" to one of my co-workers at the time. She thought I was crazy (watching a cooking show with relish, that is). Remember some of those really early shows? Alan Richmond simply sitting at a table, reviewing restaurants aloud, and Mario Batali staring at the camera like a deer caught on the New Jersey Turnpike? It's so interesting seeing the changes over the years.

Krista - The Domestic Diva is in the House! Thanks for dropping in, K! I can't wait to see how the poll results turn out, too...I'll be keeping it up all week.

  17. loved the contest for best chef, I voted for Ina Garten. Ina tempts me with achievable, yet sophisticated dishes. And, I don't feel foolish in attempting them.

  18. DecaturSue! Thank you for stopping by. I love Ina too, and I think you've beautifully defined why she's one of the most popular chefs around.
